About a mile away from a high school in Camarillo, in an industrial park surrounded by businesses, is an unmarked yellow building.
A four-lane road separates it from a large neighborhood of upscale family homes, where children ride scooters and dogs walk the lawns.
The buildings arches, roofing and ironwork invoke Spanish Mediterranean architecture; a water fountain gurgles to the right of the front door.
Its quiet outside, and crops grow in fields to the south and east.
The building is home to one of 14 Immigration and Customs Enforcement offices in the state. Inside, doors require key cards, some employees wear guns and cells are monitored by security cameras.
Like a similar facility planned in Santa Maria, the Camarillo ICE office acts as a transfer station for convicted, undocumented immigrants. It consolidated two separate offices that, since the 1990s, were located in a business area on the west side of the city.
Unlike the Santa Maria facility, however, it opened on Cortez Circle in February with no controversy.
ICE Assistant Field Office Director Raymond Kovacic said most of the office work takes place on the second floor of the two-story building a maze of cubicles and break rooms that sport NFL logos showing employees loyalties and white boards listing needed office supplies. The first floor is mostly holding cells.
Its a center for processing merely (bringing people) in and out, said Bob Naranjo, also an assistant field office director.

PLAISTOW For more than a quarter century, the police department has been working on upgrades to its firing range and tactical training center on Wilder Drive near the towns highway garage.
It was just earlier this month, however, that the planning board approved a site plan for the project.
Police Chief Stephen Savage said the formal approved site plan will accomplish a number of things as work continues on the firing range, including making sure the police department continues to use best environmental practices at the shooting range.
Up until now, Savage said there had been no formal process for work on the firing range other than going before selectmen. Now, any future work will require the approval of the planning board or building inspector.
This is formalizing our relationship, the way it should be, Savage told the planning board.
The history of the firing range goes back to the 1980s, when selectmen approved use of part of the former town dump by the police department.
Over the following years, the department worked to clean up the site, and the past several years have seen a flurry of activity at the range as it has become a training site for outside agencies as well as the Plaistow Police Department.
It has been our dream to have a permanent place that is properly supported and appropriately built, said Savage.
Several years ago, the police department added a permanent structure at the range, and last year it added an overhang for the structure.
Savage said all the work has been paid for either through donations or from asset forfeiture money.

Prue Draper, left, of the Cotati Historical Society and Louise Santero, a longtime Cotati resident, stand next to a rare chimeric coast redwood tree near the railroad track at East Cotati Avenue in Cotati.
A rare chimeric coast redwood in Cotati will be spared the ax, at least for now, after Sonoma-Marin rail officials bowed to public opposition Thursday and suspended the planned removal of the tree to make way for train tracks.
Tom Stapleton, a former Sonoma County arborist who now works in Amador County, raised concerns about the loss of the unusual tree which could be one of only a handful of coast redwoods known to be in existence that exhibit both albino and normal foliage on the same branches.
SMART had scheduled the tree for removal, possibly within the month, saying its location violates Federal Railroad Administration regulations governing the safe operation of its planned commuter train.
Stapleton's concerns, outlined Wednesday in a Press Democrat story, went national drawing calls from news media across the country, along with offers to help from other arborists and ordinary tree lovers.
Supporters of the effort also started a Cotati Redwood Facebook page.
On Thursday afternoon, Farhad Mansourian, SMART's general manager, said he had suspended the removal plans.
I wanted to pause and make sure we do the right thing for the community and the environment, Mansourian said. We are a big part of the community and we have extreme care with our environment, and we want to make sure we do the right thing.
Everything comes to a halt with this tree removal until we bring in additional experts.
People behind the effort to save the tree welcomed the move.

ST. CHARLES The St. Charles Public Library will be closed during its renovation project, beginning Monday and continuing through March 28, according to a news release.
The library, 1 S. Sixth Ave., St. Charles, is scheduled to reopen at 9 a.m. March 29. The closure will include removal of asbestos that the construction crew found in the vinyl composite tile in the Reference/Info Commons area on the librarys ground floor, according to the release.
The tiles are underneath the carpet in the reference area, and neither the public nor the library staff were exposed to the asbestos, Library Director Pam Leffler said.
Its not uncommon ... for this type of material to be found because it was used so prevalently in construction in the past, Leffler said of the asbestos. We just want to make sure were dealing with it in the most responsible manner.
The asbestos was found in an area that was added to the library in 1964. The area was sealed off after the discovery, all renovation work in that section stopped and the tile was tested to be certain asbestos was there, Leffler said.
The actual tiles in question were not disturbed or broken, which is further evidence that this asbestos did not harm anyone, Leffler said.
The librarys computer lab, which is next to the Reference area, still is open and will remain so through Sunday. The standing-only computer terminals right outside the lab will likely be removed by the end of today, Leffler said.
The librarys ongoing renovation project began in February and will include new carpeting in the Carnegie Meeting Room and mezzanine level, additional computer work stations, furniture replacement and retrofitting lights.
Due dates for library materials checked out from now until Monday have an extended loan period and will not be due until the library reopens. Any fines accrued for items due during that week will be waived, the release said.
During the closing, books and media items borrowed from the library may be returned using any of the librarys four outdoor book drop locations.
