COLLIER COUNTY, Fla.- WINK News is investigating if pest control is putting your family at risk. The Conservancy of Southwest Florida said rat poison is to blame for wildlife animals being killed.
"When you're talking about different situations, keep your kids safe, keep your pets safe."
The Conservancy of Southwest Florida has a warning - "It's just making people are aware there are consequences to a lot of these chemicals that we use," said Joanna Fitzgerald.
Chemicals like the kinds being used at your home. Joanna Fitzgerald, the Director of the von Arx Wildlife Hospital said they're seeing wildlife becoming victims of the traps and chemicals being used, including these owls.
"Knowing that owls eat rodents and all of it coming together our first thought was gosh, I wonder if they had gotten into some rodenticide, poisoning. If these things are not contained properly, keeping cats and dogs from coming up across those, and possibly ingesting them as well, theyre going to feel the effects of that poison also."
But Phil Hadley, owner of Collier Pest Control said if it's done correctly by using a secured rodent bait station, everyone will be safe.
"It's secured and lock proof so it does have a key on it that not just any screw driver can open, it has a special key that would open this thing, so it is safe for children that are curious" said Hadley.
And Hadley tells WINK News, he suspects these owls died because they were able to get to the poison.
"A lot of operators are still using the older style bait stations that are not weighted and not locked secured and they need to be updated to the new standards."
The owls are protected animals and the Conservancy fears other protected animals could become victims. Hadley said the amount of rat bait is typically based on the weight of the animal. For the average dog or cat, they would have to eaet a few pounds before it could kill them, but it would still make them very sick.

CHARLESOTN, SC (WCSC) -
The winter storms are still impacting the Lowcountry and it's in the form of bugs. Pest control experts say the cold snap is causing a certain critter to come out earlier, and stronger than normal. This could mean big headaches for homeowners.
"All the critters are coming out for spring," said Bert Snyder, Entomologist for Palmetto Exterminators.
Not just any critters, swarmers. These are the insects that start new termite colonies. Some can lay up to 2,000 eggs per day.
"The swarm of ants are getting bigger because of the cold weather, it's stacking up the swarmers and they're swarming all at one time," said Snyder.
Snyder says normally, they shed their excess skeleton at staggered times, but because of the cold snap, many did it all around the same time. Now, they've all got their adult wings at the same time, creating a larger swarm than normal for this early in spring. This could also lead to more termite damage, earlier the peak pest season, according to Snyder.
Snyder says if you see swarmers, which look like ants with wings, in and around your house, you need to have your house looked at.
"Usually when you have a swarmers inside your house, there's been termites in your wall already doing damage," said Snyder.
Snyder says there are measures you can take now to keep the swarmers from planting colonies in your home.
"One of the things that we need to have homeowners looking at is caulking, painting and fixing moisture problems in and around their house," said Snyder.

Bob Chialastri explains, Youve basically got two types of rodents, meaning two types in the Metro subway, where Chialastri, a practitioner of the pest-control arts, spends many hours peering at floors and poking in crevices.
You have your ordinary field mice, which commuters see scurrying in stations from time to time. And you have your plump-keistered Norway rats, which, believe Chialastri when he tells you, Them critters is nasty, you happen to corner one.
Just now, making his Orange Line rounds, station by station, toting a bucket filled with traps and poisoned bait, he raps on the glass of the mezzanine kiosk in Landover, where manager Brenda Lampkins is on duty. Lately, Lampkins has been a bit distracted at work, beset by anxiety and occasional jolts of mortal fear.
How you doing today? Chialastri says, sticking his weathered, beefy face through the kiosk doorway and glancing around. Im the exterminator. You having any
Yeah! says Lampkins, eyes wide. Rising from her chair, she points to the floor beneath a console of video monitors. Its a big, fat mouse in here!
The reason Metro riders, unlike straphangers in some other big cities, are barred from eating in the subway isnt because the system has an awful pest problem; its because crumbs and discarded leftovers would invite an infestation (or as Chialastri mildly overstates it, a Black Plague-type situation). As it is, scofflaws including snacking transit workers make it necessary for Metro to contract a full-time rodent killer.
Chialastri, 61, who calls himself a country boy, drives 65 miles to work from Marylands Eastern Shore and afterward happily retreats across the Bay Bridge, having no interest in the metropolis beyond snuffing out vermin. He says the job demands patience and persistence. So as Lampkins goes on venting about the kiosk rodent, Chialastri, a one-man operation in the transit system, pays close attention to the details.
Its in here where they put those traps down, she tells him.
And he aint coming to it?
Nope, uh-uh, she says. While Chialastri inspects the floor, Lampkins, 56, shakes her head. I am so horrified of a mouse. Gesturing to a row of fare machines, she says: It runs from in here to back over there in an angle. Then it runs back over here. Back and forth, back and forth. ... Hes got like a little hump in his back.
