Batten down the hatches!
That's the best way to limit the number of stink bugs that invade households, according to local exterminators.
Be diligent, said Patty Daniels, owner of Daniels Pest Control of Connellsville since 1995. Seal cracks and gaps around windows and doors, and repair damaged screens. Install screens on vents including bathroom, clothes dryer and stove vents.
Local exterminators concur that it's impossible to keep all stink bugs outside, although there are ways to reduce their numbers when they get inside, including traps.
The most effective are pheromone traps, which lure the insects with a stink bug-like scent, said Don Swaney, who has 34 years experience with Vermin Control Co. of Uniontown; The company has been in business since 1928.
Light traps also are somewhat effective, he said. Shaped like a funnel, the traps contain a bright LED light which attracts the bugs. They go in but can't get out.
Nix sticky traps
Sticky traps, used to catch many pests, have minimal success with stink bugs, said George Riggar, who has operated Safeway Pest Control in Uniontown since 1986. You only catch a few.
Swaney agreed.

Taking a proactive approach, the Food Safety Modernization Act calls for implementing hands-on measures to prevent food contamination. Rigorous pest control management is one of these proactive primary lines of defense that prevents foodborne illness and contamination
The excitement generated around the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) promises to be a win-win for the consumer, as well as for all parties in the food supply chain. With rules more clearly defined and federally mandated, food processors will know exactly what is expected of them. Concurrently, the FDA will be endowed with the ability to inspect and issue fines and penalties for noncompliance.
Plants that have already been audited by major third-party auditors and the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) standards will most likely be in compliance. Smaller, regional food processing plants that have not already implemented a formal food safety program will see the largest impact. Facilities will be required by FSMA to prepare and implement a written plan identifying possible hazards and specifying the steps that will be taken to ensure food safety and monitoring. Food processors will also be required to maintain thorough records, including those actions taken to correct potential or ongoing threats to food safety.
Learn how to survive an FDA audit
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) will be a critical component of any comprehensive food safety plan. The largest food recall in U.S. history occurred in 2009, the result of Salmonella traced back to Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) in Blakely, GA. The Salmonella outbreak killed eight and affected 19,000. Inspectors found rats scampering throughout the facility, a copious amount of rat feces, and a leaky roof capable of nurturing noxious germs. This massive recall, and subsequent plant closing, helped spur the push for federally mandated regulation, which has taken the form of FSMA.
IPM combines pest management, sanitation, and maintenance practices to prevent food contamination from rodents and insects. FSMA requires hazard analysis, necessitating facilities to identify and evaluate known or anticipated hazards. Comprehensive inspections and risk evaluation of a proactive IPM program should assess facility design, structural issues, and other conditions conducive to pest infestation. Additionally, FSMA requires preventive controls in order to prevent or significantly minimize food safety hazards. This compels processors to examine the use of sealants to prevent egress, the elimination of potential pest enticements, sanitation practices, and non-chemical options. Finally, FSMA requires corrective actions be taken, recorded and reported, as well as thoroughly documented monitoring schedules and procedures. It also necessitates reassessment of each facilitys food safety plan at least once every three years.
A recent agreement between the FDA, The Center for Environmental Health (CEH), and the Center for Food Safety (CFS) has resulted in a staggered schedule for implementation of FSMA. Originally set for full implementation in June 2015, the new deadlines are as follows:
Facilities, processors, and transporters should take note of the Aug 30, 2015 date. Putting an effective pest management plan in place now will ensure your efforts are consistent with what FSMA will demand. The standards, as time progresses, may become more stringent, but a well-devised and well-executed IPM plan now may prevent a costly and humiliating recall later.

A continued construction boom in South Florida and Miami-Dade County has put a heightened demand on skilled construction workers that has only increased over the past eight months.
To account for higher ratio of demand to supply, firms have begun increasing offered wages to attract skilled workers, said Brad Meltzer, the southeast president for Plaza Construction.
For Florida construction, there have been several hundred thousand jobs, and weve started to see more activity in that sector, said Sean Snaith, director of the University of Central Floridas Institute for Economic Competitiveness at the 2014 Certified Commercial Investment Member (CCIM) Commercial Real Estate Outlook Conference this year.
With the current work, the skilled labor workforce is definitely becoming a situation that all of the general contractors and subcontractors are keeping an eye on as a valid concern, said Mr. Meltzer. The projects that tend to feel the brunt of the demand are mostly likely smaller ones, from which some of the larger projects in town are pulling away workers.
There has been competition to attract the skilled labor force and to try to lure them to different companies and job sites, Mr. Meltzer said.
For large projects like the Brickell City Centre, there was the expectation that the drain on the workforce would create an absence of workers. Thankfully, the City Centre project hasnt created as much of a void as some had expected, Mr. Meltzer said.
More technical trades like mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection the MEPS are typically in short supply. Those are traditionally the more complicated, and the trades that typically require the most education and training, Mr. Meltzer said. Others trades like painting, stuccos and masonry, which are still very critical trades to the industry but dont require as much training and education, may be easier to find, he said.
Plaza Construction has long looked on a national level to attract top talent in subcontracting, and its possible that in response to the local drain on the skilled workforce others will do the same, Mr. Meltzer said.
Both with general contractors and subcontractors, theres only so many skilled, qualified, experienced people in our industry, and while we are attracting talent from out of town its hard to find, he said.

The snow is finally melting in Philadelphia and homeowners are seeing lawns for the first time in months. Unfortunately, many are finding significant damage including strange runways chiseled through lawns, ugly pink tinged spots and tree and shrub roots that appear to be gnawed. Giroud Tree and Lawn explains the problems and the lawn and tree service actions homeowners can take to repair the damage and get ready for Spring.
Heavy snow created the perfect environment for lawn damage from voles and fungus, explains Mike Taraborrelli, Lawn Service Manager at Giroud Tree and Lawn. While voles were able feed and dig undisturbed for months, snow mold fungus also erupted on many lawns.
Strange, meandering cracks or runways in the lawn are the first sign of vole activity and damage. Voles dig runways under the snow to venture out from burrows located in well hidden spots like mulch, tall grass, wood piles and rocks. Searching for food is the primary mission of this foray. Besides chewing blades of grass down to ground level, voles may also do considerable tree and shrub damage.
Most lawns will recover from vole damage without help. Lawns with extensive damage may require homeowner or lawn service intervention. Actions can include raking away the debris and excrement in the runways, additional topsoil, a light application of fertilizer and overseeding areas that do not recover with a compatible mix of grasses. Overseeding should be done before pre-emergent crabgrass controls are applied.
Vole damage to trees and shrubs can be life threatening. Single stemmed trees like dogwood and crabapple will likely die if voles have girdled the tree by eating the bark completely around the trunk. Multi-stemmed shrubs like Juniper, Rhododendron, Viburnum, Euonymous (Burning Bush) and Azalea can survive. Professional pruning and/or fertilization may help with recovery.
A second common problem caused by the heavy snow cover is snow mold. Characterized by circular patches of matted grass with a pinkish tinge, snow mold is a fungus that erupts in cold, wet conditions. For extensive damage, fungicide treatment, lawn aeration to open up the matted areas and slit seeding are recommended.
To ensure the lawn, trees and shrubs are ready for spring, homeowners should contact a lawn service professional to inspect lawn condition and health. Trees and shrubs damaged by voles, winter storms or other problems should be evaluated by an ISA Certified Arborist for safety and health to determine if removal is required or if the plants can be saved.
About Giroud Tree and Lawn Giroud Tree and Lawn specializes in tree service, tree removal and lawn care programs that make customers love doing business with the company since 1974.
