Its 6 a.m. and a thick serving of snow has covered the UR campus, rendering a variety of surfaces around campus a soft, pure white. Yet, as happens often on our campus, that layer of snow is subsequently and efficiently swept away. Rarely is a thought ever spared for those members of the UR staff who faithfully and frequently push away this potential hazard, salt the walkways and roads on campus, and finally melt away until the next snow hits. There are many such members of our campus community, but we must be careful not to forget their contributions, or take them for granted.
One exceedingly common sight in a dorm building is bathrooms littered with a variety of refuse, whether paper towels strewn around on the floor, in the sink and atop other surfaces; toilet paper littering the inside of the stalls; or even empty shampoo containers left to collect dust once their purpose has been fufilled. Yet, the students of the campus community seem to ignore the fact that this trash have to be cleaned up by someone, if not fellow students then the workers who come to the bathrooms as a part of their work routine. Toilets, showers, and sinks all offer examples of how students may ignore those that have to deal with their actions (and trash).
Food service offers another example of how students can work to be more respectful to those members of the campus community who dont attend its classes. When ordering a Meliora Burger or grabbing a Pesto Chicken Sandwitch, students should be as respectful as they can to these fellow members of our community. Please and thank yous, or even a glance up from ones cell phone are steps in the right direction for on-campus respect. It is imperative that we work to make all who come to our campus, day in and day out, feel like part of the community. All too often, when we are caught up in our own work and lives, we find it easy to ignore the often unaknowledged workers that make our campus ever better.
But the disrespect we may sometimes show, unintentionally or otherwise, is not confined to these few examples. The Stacks can be found littered with trash, food, and even books that students have failed to return to their proper place on the shelves, or even to a library cart. Even the lounges can be a casualty of disrespect when students end their late-night escapades and decide to leave the lounges in a worse condition than they found them. Kitchens, too, can offer the same display of casual indifference to the workers that maintain our fine campus. So next time, when ordering at Danforth, cooking in the kitchen, or just hanging out in the lounge; think for a moment about whether youre actions contribute to respect on campus, or detract from it.

BERNARDSVILLE The complex and emotional battle over plans to cut down an estimated 250 trees at Bernards High School for an athletic field expansion is reaching a critical juncture, with opponents working feverishly to block the project.
If their legal efforts fail, the trees could be chopped down as soon as this month.
Representatives for Active Citizens for Responsible Sustainability Inc. (ACRES) appeared before the Board of Adjustment Monday night seeking an interpretation on jurisdictional issues involving the field proposal by the Somerset Hills Regional Board of Education. But after several hours of intense debate, the zoning board rejected its arguments.
The evidence I have seen is that we do not have jurisdiction, said Board of Adjustment Attorney Scott Parente.
ACRES is seeking a site plan review of the application by the zoners. Concerned about drainage and other environmental issues, they see the field expansion as an intensification of a non-conforming use in a residential zone.
During a convoluted, sometimes heated discussion, the board debated whether the tree removal should trigger a site plan review, even though no formal application had been filed by the school district.
ACRES wants to see a different field alignment which the group claims would save hundreds of trees and thousands of dollars.
Some zoning board members wanted additional time to review the matter Monday, but the school board, which is facing a March 15 federal moratorium on tree cutting that could delay the project several more months, pushed for a decision.

SAN LORENZO -- Randy Waage had heard PG&E was going to cut down some trees on the southwest side of the Duck Pond park, but the barren view afterward stunned him.
"It's pretty much decimated the area," the San Lorenzo resident said. "It really changes the landscape of the park."
The power company began removing dozens of trees at the park in February, part of a program to clear obstructions from its 6,750-miles of natural gas pipelines from Bakersfield to Eureka, said Tamar Sarkissian, Pacific Gas & Electric spokeswoman.
PG&E took out 69 mature eucalyptus, privet, bottlebrush and pine trees that were in its right of way along railroad tracks next to the park, formally called San Lorenzo Community Park.
The park district had no say in the trees being removed, said Larry Lepore, parks superintendent at the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District. However, the district planned to remove the trees as part of a park upgrade plan, he said.
At the park district's request, PG&E also took out 35 trees that the district tagged in its park master plan and pruned some others.
San Lorenzo resident Michelle Clowser knew the trees would come out eventually, but she had not expected it so soon.
"I was very surprised after the fact; it looks like a different park."
PG&E's program -- Pipeline Pathways -- comes in the aftermath of the 2010 San Bruno gas pipeline explosion that killed eight people and destroyed 38 homes.
"Since San Bruno, we have been taking great measures to ensure the safety of our pipeline system," Sarkissian said. In addition to clearing its gas transmission pipeline right of way, the utility is surveying for leaks, testing pipe strength, inspecting the lines with cameras and automating valves.

A HUGE tree which came crashing down at a graveyard in Highcliffe following the heavy storms is being prepared for removal.
The 40ft oak has damaged a number of gravestones at St Marks churchyard and the groundsman, Philip Buxton said he is eager for it to be removed as soon as possible so relatives of the deceased are spared any further upset.
Mr Buxton said the tree must have come down on either February 20 or 21, a week after torrential rain and gale force winds up to 70mph sent trees to the ground and caused flooding throughout the area. The church has now hired contractors and Mr Buxton said he is planning the safest way to remove the tree, which is currently resting across several gravestones.
Mr Buxton added: We have had small trees come down in the past but nothing as big as this one.

If you went swimming early last month at Belmont Parks historic pool, the Plunge, you likely noticed that the Wyland sea-life mural on the south wall was split from pool deck to high ceiling, exposing vertical steel beams. And if you stop by today, youll find the Plunge closed for repairs, with signs of construction throughout the Belmont Park complex.
Planned work on the Plunge pool at the Wavehouse Athletic Club was expected to take up to two weeks for replacement of the nearly 30-year-old filtration system with a modern one that uses fewer chemicals. But draining the pool revealed bigger problems: in places, water had seeped underneath the tile, some of which is dated from the 1920s, and patchwork repairs were failing.
We were stepping in sections of the pool and could sink, said Belmont Parks director of operations, Justin Lopez. The Plunge will be closed until late April, while the pool is repaired and the uncommon small tiles are replaced. The San Diego History Center is ensuring that the new tile maintains the original look of the pool, which debuted in 1925 as the largest saltwater pool in the world.
When the now-freshwater pool reopens, it wont be without its famous artwork. Accessing the old Plunge buildings interior steel structure for repair and reinforcement necessitated removal of sections of drywall, including some on which Wyland painted one his famous Whaling Wall murals in 1989.
Orcas off Point Loma will not be lost, however. Before repair work began, Wyland and his team took hundreds of digital photos of the mural. Steve Creech, executive director of the Wyland Foundation, said, We have been working very closely with the developer to find a solution that not only retains the integrity of the former mural, but does something that we hope will be amazing for everyone.
That solution involves using the photos to replicate the mural on glass panels, which will allow swimmers to enjoy the orcas as before, but will also be transparent from the opposite side of the interior wall, so that gym users can see into the pool area. The effect will be like a bus wrap, explained Lopez. The mural will also be illuminated and visible at night from outside the building.
It isn't only the Plunge thats getting upgraded; hardhats and barriers are everywhere, as much of Belmont Park is being reworked. There are plans for a large rooftop deck, restaurants, new bathrooms, and more even a zipline. The owners expect that by the start of summer, Mission Beachs oceanfront park will be back and better than before.
