Sprinkler system, new station help contain fire at Olympus Junior High

    - March 8, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

HOLLADAY Fire crews credit an upgraded sprinkler system and a new fire station nearby with containing a fire at Olympus Junior High School.

A curtain caught fire near the stage at Olympus Junior High, 2217 E. Murray Holladay Road, just before 7 p.m. Thursday, and smoke and heat activated the sprinklers, Unified Fire Capt. Fitzgerald Petersen said.

Unified fire crews, stationed in the new Station No. 104 across the street, responded within moments of the alarm and found the school filled with smoke, Fitzgerald said. The firehouse opened in January.

The fire was contained to one alarm, Petersen said. No one was in the building at the time, and the cause of the fire has not been identified.

The sprinklers were only triggered at the scene of the fire. No other areas of the school experienced water damage.

"It worked perfectly," Petersen said. "We're very happy with the response, how quickly it was contained and put out."

Granite School District officials confirmed that classes at Olympus Junior High will be held as scheduled Friday.

Broken sprinkler causes 'waterfall' down front of SF building

    - March 8, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A broken sprinkler system at the top of an office building in San Francisco's Financial District sent water cascading down to the street below and drenching passersby Friday morning, according to fire officials.

A broken valve was reported at 9:27 a.m. at a building at Kearny and Market streets.

Justin Wheeler said he was working inside the T-Mobile store on Market Street Friday morning when he heard a commotion outside on the street.

So the St Louis native poked his curious head out the door, and saw an unusual deluge when he looked up.

"Gallons. Just a sheet of water, just pouring down," said Wheeler.

The manager at Hakkasan restaurant on the building's second floor said staff had seen the water falling, but said the flooding had not affected restaurant operations.

"It was a lot of water," said Alexandra Tejada, who works at the restaurant. "It was going on for about 15 minutes."

The San Francisco Fire Department was called and Truck 13 responded. Department spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge said by the time firefighters got to the 12th floor a building employee had the water turned off.

Talmadge said it was a pipe from a sprinkler system that broke causing the massive waterfall onto the sidewalk down below.

The property manager of the building declined to comment. The building remained open to the businesses located inside the property.

Hatfield Wonderbra shop fire could have engulfed shopping centre, say fire chiefs

    The Galleria

A fire in Hatfields Wonderbra shop could potentially have burned the Galleria Shopping Centre down but was thwarted by a sprinkler system.

Heat from the blaze activated the sprinkler, and it was quickly put out by firefighters.

Fire chiefs have lauded the system, which they say prevented disaster.

The drama unfolded at around 8pm last Friday.

Chief Fire Officer and Director of Community Protection Roy Wilsher said: The sprinkler quickly stopped the fire spreading and as a result firefighters were able to put out the fire quickly, safely and, crucially, before it caused any damage to the rest of the centre.

Richard Thake, Cabinet Member for Community Safety, said: The cost of installing a sprinkler system is a fraction of the financial cost of a fire, which could ruin a small business.

Thats just one of the reasons why we want to see them installed on a much more regular basis than they are now.

Sprinkler system minimizes fire near Rancho Santa Fe, minimizes damage

    - March 8, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

On Tuesday, March 4, at 9:39 a.m., firefighters from the cities of Del Mar, San Diego, and Solana Beach and the Rancho Santa Fe Fire Protection District responded to the report of a structure fire in the 3000 block of Via De La Valle in Del Mar. Upon arrival they discovered that a fire in a back hallway of Sublime Tavern had been extinguished by one sprinkler head.

Fortunately, the fire protection system worked as it was designed to, said RSFFPD Battalion Chief Chris Galindo. The single sprinkler head provided the occupants with time to safely evacuate the building and kept the fire from spreading and causing further damage.

Three suites in the commercial building were affected and the total estimated damaged is $50,000. The cause is under investigation but appears to be accidental in nature.

Map Sheds New Light on Daylight Saving Time

    - March 8, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Its that time of year again when an hour disappears from the clock, making for bleary eyes and missed appointments among people caught unawares.

Daylight Saving Time begins on Sunday, when clocks will jump instantly from 2 a.m. to 3 a.m.

And if that shift seems somewhat arbitrary, a new map created by math blogger Stefano Maggiolo sheds new light on how arbitrary our conventions of time really are, showing graphically how out of sync the clock is with the real solar day.

A few years ago I went to Spain for the first time, and like many I was surprised by how late is dinner, Maggiolo writes on his blog. The first night I dined almost alone in a restaurant at 8 p.m., going away just as people were starting to come in. Of course this can be mostly explained by cultural reasons, but the clearly later-than-usual summer sunsets must also have played a role in shaping the Spanish days.

Maggiolo, an engineer at Google, color-coded a map of the world, showing locations where the clock is behind the solar day in red and places where it is ahead of the solar day in green. The more ahead or behind, the deeper the color.

More than70 countries now observe Daylight Saving Time, but the beginning and ending dates often differ from the U.S., which has itself changed the schedule a number of times over the years.

The Energy Policy Act of 2005 extended the dates of Daylight Saving Time by about a month to its current schedule in 2007, starting on the second Sunday in March and ending on the first Sunday in November.

Vandals raid 38 sheds at allotments in Wythenshawe

    - March 8, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Thieves have devastated allotments in Wythenshawe and raided 38 sheds in one night

Thieves have caused devastation on allotments in Wythenshawe.

The intruders vandalised plots and plundered 38 sheds in just one night on Stancliffe Road.

Allotment owners arrived the following morning to find gardening equipment had been stolen, vegetables uprooted and soil hurled around the plots.

The raid took place between 5pm on Tuesday (March 4) and 10am the following day.

It is believed the crooks entered the allotments by Hollyhedge Park.

Pc Nicola Fox, said: Whoever is responsible has made untidy searches of the sheds and stole various items of gardening equipment.

In doing so they have left a trail of destruction behind them, even going as far as to deliberately throw soil and seeds around the allotments and unearth various vegetables that they have also thrown. This was clearly not just about stealing equipment; this was a wanton act of mindless and deliberate vandalism.

Obviously local residents and those who use the allotments are upset and angry and even worried about going back should these mindless vandals return.
