    Hiring a plumber

If you're thinking of hiring a plumber, whether you need an emergency Los Angeles plumber or you're thinking about a long-term project, there are some things to know before you dive in. The quality of services offered by plumbers varies considerably, and you want to make sure your pro knows exactly what she is doing and is capable of performing the work efficiently, legally, and cleanly. Save money and time up front by making sure you're working with the perfect choice of plumbing professional.

Plumbers handle a variety of tasks including laying new plumbing, replacing or repairing damaged pipes, installing fixtures, replacing toilet seals, and troubleshooting common plumbing problems. Some plumb for gas as well as water, depending on their training. Some may also handle stoppages, although others prefer to leave that to firms that specialize in them.

Before hiring a plumber, determine exactly what you need: that's going to be an important factor when it comes to deciding which plumber is best for you. Use local resources to search for plumbers -- our own plumber locator service is a great tool, but you can also use Yelp, Angie's List, and similar sites. Check out reviews and comments on various plumbing pros, and ask your friends who they use. If you're working with a realtor, ask for advice on plumbing services, because real estate professionals often keep a rolodex of pros they like to work with.

That information is going to help you narrow down a list of plumbing professionals who have performed good work in the past. Next, check to be sure that all your candidates have current licenses. Plumbers, like other contracting professionals, have to provide their license numbers in ads, on business cards, and in other publications, so it's a snap to look up a plumber's license, confirm it's current, and ask about any consumer complaints.

Once you're satisfied that a plumber is qualified and operating above board, you can call around to get some quotes. Be sure to describe the job completely, and be aware that the plumber may need to conduct a home visit to go over the situation and determine if there are any special factors that might affect the price. Keep the project the same for each plumber you talk don't; don't ask one about replacing the toilet seal and another about replacing the whole toilet, for example, because these are two different jobs. When you talk to the plumber, ask if she is bonded and insured in case a problem with the job develops, and ask her about her plan for addressing the given plumbing issue you are experiencing.

The issue may have a single straightforward fix, or she may have several suggestions. Confirm the pricing and pros and cons of each and ask the plumber for a recommendation based on her experience. A good plumber will provide sound, reasonable advice, even if it means not making as much on an individual job.

Compare your bids -- try to get at least three. The lowest bid is not necessarily the best one. Consider hourly rates, which materials are being used, plumbing techniques, and whether the plumber has evaluated the situation for possible snags. For example, one plumber might be estimating that she'll have the job done in three hours, while another thinks it will take at least six: you should find out why, because the first plumber might be underbidding in the hopes of landing the contract.

Once you're confident with a choice of plumber, get a contract for the job. Read it over carefully and make note of all the terms. Make sure it discusses the work in detail, provides a time estimate, and frees you of financial liability once the bill is paid. And if you like the job when it's finished, make sure to write a positive review or tell a friend!

Frozen pipes? One plumber has temporary solution

    - March 8, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

Experts say they may have a temporary fix for people dealing with frozen pipes, but you'll need help from your neighbor.

"A lot of people are without water right now. I think the totals up around 700 between Waterloo and Cedar Falls. I just hate to see that," said Steve Collum with Plumbing Concepts in CedarFalls. "But this is a good temporary fix for people to get their water back,"

Plumbing Concepts says the process starts by hooking up a hose from one outside faucet to the outside faucet next door, and then turning them both on. They say you will need a washing machine hose as well.

They sayyou'll need to also shut off the main water valve in the house without water.

"And you can feed that house like it is when you're running off the water main," said Collum. "The only thing you have to do is let water run in the hose that's froze up so the hose doesn't freeze up."

Collum says he's seen this work multiple times and says it's a possible option for people waiting for their pipes to thaw.

He says for safety reasons he wouldn't advise drinking the water, but it can be used for other things, like flushing toilets or taking a shower.

Two Lake Charles men were indicted Thursday on an attempted first-degree murder charge in connection with a December shooting.

Damien Jermaine Royster and Thomas Demond Plumber, both 22, were arrested by city police four days after a Dec. 18 shooting at a North Franklin Street home.

At the time of their arrest, Deputy Chief Mark Kraus said Royster, Plumber and an unidentified third suspect attempted to rob a man at the home.

"The victim, who suffered several gunshot wounds, said he was home alone when three subjects knocked at his back door," Kraus said. "Once he opened the door, the three males pushed their way in and began to batter him in an attempt to rob him. The victim said he was able to fight them off when two of the suspects fled while one suspect shot several rounds at him while exiting."

Catlins mhua increase after pest control

Catlins mhua increase after pest control

An important mhua or yellowhead population in the Catlins is on the increase after a successful joint agency pest control programme last spring.

In August TBfree New Zealand and DOC worked together to treat 47,000 ha of forest in the Catlins with aerial 1080 to knock down possums, rats and stoats.

DOCs focus was to control rats and stoats to protect mhua in 10,000 ha of beech forest, while TBfree New Zealand targeted possums to control bovine tuberculosis (TB) over 37,000 ha surrounding this area.

DOC Conservation Services Manager David Agnew says monitoring results show that mhua have increased to the highest level recorded since the population suffered a big decline about 14 years ago.

Surveys in October and November last year show the population is recovering well after the pest control in August. We found more birds and they have expanded into areas they used to be found in.

The opportunity to piggy-back on the TBfree operation when rat levels were on the increase meant that mhua could be protected right at the start of their nesting season in October when they were most vulnerable, says David Agnew.

Treating a much larger area at one go had the benefit of slowing the reinvasion of predators as well as significant cost savings from shared planning.

The co-ordinated operation considerably decreased possum numbers, the main source of TB in livestock, and helped maintain the progress already made in reducing the risk of TB-infected wild animals spreading the disease to farmed cattle and deer in the surrounding area.

Rat levels, which were tracking at between 14% and 18% in mid to low-altitude forest areas in August, fell to undetectable levels in November after 1080 treatment. Possum numbers fell to between 0.33% and 0.17% (residual trap catch) from a pre-operation level of 3%.
