REDDING, Calif. -
An agriculture program at Shasta College is seeing a need and addressing it.
It is called the Pest Control Adviser Preparation Program and it is giving students a direct line into the field.
Agriculture is a billion dollar industry in California, said the programs lead instructor Leimone Waite.
If farmers do not own the land, and many of them do not, they have a Pest Control Adviser write them what Waite called a prescription to treat any pest problems on the crop. Only licensed Pest Control Advisers can perform this task. They also will offer recommendations regarding things like pest management materials, land preparation, fertilization, cultivating and harvesting.
Shasta College launched the program in the spring to get students licensed for the job.
Waite said the field used to require a bachelors or doctorate degree in a specific plant science area. Those requirements changed when the state was seeing fewer people entering the field of work.
"California continually puts more regulations on farming and just pesticide use in general. So it keeps increasing the need for PCAs, Waite said. So it's sort of not only where you having an increased need, we're also having a decrease in actual people that employed in the field."
Even the students involved in the program are seeing these results.
It is in need, because a lot of elder gentlemen are currently in the field for PCAs, said student Lindee Jones. It's an in demand job."

Throughout his administration, Gov. Sean Parnell has accused the Environmental Protection Agency of overreaching on Alaska affairs. Now, it looks like the EPA may have reached into Parnells own home. The Governors Mansion appears on a list of construction projects requiring EPA intervention for lead violations.

Lead poisoning is nasty business. It can cause headaches and seizures, and result in miscarriages. If youre a child, the symptoms are especially bad.
Lethargy. Inability to pay of attention. At high enough levels, it can cause death, says Wallace Reid.
Reid works out of the EPAs Seattle office, and his team handles investigations into lead violations. Because a lot of modern cases of lead exposure are caused by home repairs, the EPA implemented a rule in 2010 requiring contractors to be certified in lead paint removal if theyre working on a house that was built before 1978.
Like the Alaska Governors Mansion.
The building is a century old, and the state hired Alaska Commercial Contractors to restore the whole exterior a couple of years ago. And that meant removing lead paint, which the company was not certified to do at the time.
We first became aware of it this problem in Alaska because of an anonymous tip and complaint that this work was going on and that there were problems associated with it, says Reid.
Reid says that as soon as the EPA learned of the violation, they sent two inspectors to check the area for lead paint. They found paint chips on the lawn and on the street.

March 7, 2014 Weather halts tractor repairs Business about to pick up for lawn tractor repair shops
By Zach Osowski The Herald Bulletin The Herald Bulletin Fri Mar 07, 2014, 09:12 PM EST
ANDERSON, Ind. Lawn machine and tractor repair shops could see a major influx of tractors as farmers get ready for spring in the coming weeks.
Todd Sink, a worker at Bendle Lawn Equipment Service & Sales, said that usually by this time, the shop has already seen a lot of tractors for repairs and tuneups. This year has been a different story, as freezing temperatures and large amounts of snow have kept some of the tractors stuck.
"We've had a backup of tractor repairs," Sink said. "With this weather, people haven't been able to get their tractors out of the barn."
That doesn't mean Sink and his fellow mechanics haven't been busy. Sink said they have had a good amount of snow equipment in need of repairs to keep them working. With the weather looking like it might warm up soon, Sink said he anticipates seeing a large amount of tractors for the next couple of weeks.
What tractors need varies from just minor tuneups to full-blown repairs. Sometimes repairs aren't known until the owner takes it out and tries to run it. That could be happening in the next few weeks as central Indiana thaws.
That is, as long as the weather decides to stay warm. Another round of snow could push the delay on getting spring tractors ready further back.
Either way, Sink said, he and the other workers at Bendle will be ready to go, whether they have a few more weeks of snow blower repairs or they start bringing out the tractor tools.

Weve had our winter a little snow, a cold snap or two, and a bunch of rain so now its time to start thinking about spring.
And nothing says spring like yard work and landscape renovations.
If you love your home, and you havent already done the deed, chances are youre already thinking about how youre going to transform your yard into your personal paradise this spring and summer. And if youre a typical homeowner, you probably dont have nearly enough money to do everything youd like to do, or enough time to accomplish it all.
Which is why Sherilyn Gale and Rob Turner of Beneath Your Feat Landscaping suggest the best way to begin transforming your yard is to develop a plan.
Naturally, there are as many ways to develop the perfect plan as there are people, and your personal paradise is not going to end up looking anything like your neighbours or best friends.
Its all about personal taste, say Gale and Turner.
Even if youre on a budget, you can achieve wonders, if you put your mind to it.
The award-winning landscaping team says a good plan starts with a dream. Do you envision a party zone or a personal oasis? Is it about food production or a place for the kids to play? Did you take a trip somewhere and marvel at the gardens you saw?
Perhaps you wish to include a design such as a Japanese garden, or as many customers we have built for want, a garden that emulates the Whistler theme natural rocks, boulders and native plantings that are drought tolerant. It could include an actual waterfall and stream, or even a dry river bed, says Gale.
One of the advantages of creating a plan, says Turner, is that it allows you to do the necessary projects over time. This is particularly helpful for those who can only devote so much time each year, or those whose budget only stretches so far.

Author and landscape architect Senga Lindsay will inspire both your landscape and your fresh-from-the-garden meals with her multi-media workshop, The Best of the Best: Edible Trees, Shrubs and Plants to Use in Your Landscape.
The workshop takes place this Saturday, March 8, at 2 p.m. at the Sunshine Coast Botanical Garden in Sechelt.
The grow-your-own-food movement has taken a stylish turn these days as foodies want their edible plants to look as good as they taste. From fruiting shrubs to root crops, patio containers to acreage, tasty plants belong in every garden.
Lindsay is a bright light on the Vancouver garden design scene and has created edible landscapes for private clients and restaurants, even edible rooftops.
Her recent book, Edible Landscaping: Urban Food Gardens that Look Great, will be available for sale. You can catch a preview on her YouTube channel, Pinterest page or website, http://www.sengadesigns.com.
A homes landscape can be its most healthy and attractive room, helping our planet while saving money too. You may be willing to make a few small changes or renovate your whole yard; either way, youll reap the environmental benefits, enjoy your outdoor space more, and harvest the herbs, fruit and vegetables, too.
Tickets are on sale at the Garden at 5941 Mason Road in West Sechelt, at local nurseries and at the Sechelt Visitors Centre, $12 for Botanical Garden members or $15 for non-members.
