Nacogdoches ISD officials are preparing to solicit requests for qualifications from prospective architects after trustees on Thursday called for a $58.8 million bond election.
We will set some criteria for those, and we anticipate quite a few architects will be interested in this project, Superintendent Dr. Fred Hayes said. We will take anywhere from six to 10 architects to a committee made up of board members, community members and school people, and then interview those architects before determining (which) to take to the board for approval.

NISD begins architect search, presents bond facts
Edan Bar-Lev needed some inspiration for a makeover of his North Tustin front yard. The yard is oddly shaped, in a cul-de-sac with a curved driveway. And it was almost completely raw, with a small patch of grass and lots of weeds. A far cry from the English-style garden Bar-Lev and his wife craved.
I just got stuck, said Bar-Lev, who is the co-owner of a home-remodeling company.
Rather than dole out $2,500 to hire a landscape architect, Bar-Lev decided to use $350 and try a website he'd stumbled upon that crowdsources architectural design services. Soon, four designers had bid on the job, with one nailing a design that included a curved pathway to a hedged rose garden.
On arcbazar.com, property owners upload descriptions and photos of their space, setting an award and a timeframe for the competition. Architects from around the world can then submit their best designs, competing for the cash, plus points and recognition with Arcbazar.
The startup company has stirred some controversy. Industry professionals question the quality of the designs and lament the low-price rates. They fear it straps architects to the Internet's slave-labor machine, with professional design services lumped into such labor-bidding efforts as Mechanical Turk, TaskRabbit and Fancy Hands.
Arcbazar is gaining traction with clients, though, making design services accessible for home and small business owners who might otherwise go without them.
A Chino Hills family used the site to get plans for its living room makeover from a designer in France. A Redondo Beach man had his family room designed by a Colorado company. And Sara Medina got a design for her Huntington Beach yard from an architect in Albania.
Medina's backyard is quite barren, with grass and thick bushes covering a rotted fence. She wants to transform it into a tranquil, yet low-maintenance, oasis.
I'm really excited about it because they basically did everything we asked for, Medina said. It's going to fit perfectly.
Medina had consulted with a local architect, but the price she was quoted sent her looking for other options. Then she found Arcbazar through the Angie's List website.

Architects miffed at website that offers low-cost bids
Despite the mushrooming of community malls and other retail outlets over the past few years, consumers still choose convenience over prices owing to traffic congestion and other such problems, Veena Arunyakasem, managing director and founder of One Click, a shopping mall and property development consulting company, said last week.
This presents a vast opportunity for developers of commercial property such as condominiums and office buildings to incorporate retail shops and service facilities into their projects to serve their occupants and tenants.
"They should ride on this new trend that will help them reap more revenue, especially with projects that are located far away from existing shops," she said.
Many office building owners still have not made full use of their available space on the ground level to accommodate retail shops, food courts and service facilities, or have not done so in a professional manner that will help improve the quality of life for their tenants.
Leading hospitals such as Bangkok Hospital are stepping into the commercial property business by leasing out space to Starbucks, Au Bon Pain and other shops. Bumrungrad Hospital is constructing a building that is more or less a shopping mall within its premises.
"Interestingly, it also has a hotel offering packages bundled with healthcare treatments."
Even universities are now running their own malls. Bangkok University has already opened one while Thammasat is planningg one.
"They have 40,000-50,000 students who have purchasing power and are ready to spend all they have," she said.
Flea markets are also booming and the trend will continue as long as new housing estates and communities continue popping up. A flea market operator in Bangkok said he earned Bt1.6 million a month from utilising his 3.5 rai of land. To serve the new generation of consumers, more flea markets should be developed with unique themes, cleanliness and fresh designs.
