If San Francisco's Herbst Manor looks like one of the most eccentrically designed homes on the market, that's because it very well might be, with interiors done by 27 different design firms. A Teepee-equipped living room, a bathroom with an overgrown biowall, a bedroom ceiling covered with a black-and-white map of downtown SF; all were installed by the 2013 San Francisco Decorator Showcase, which left few traces of the overabundance of mirrors and gold trim that gave the 115-year-old Ernest Coxhead-designed Georgian mansion the nickname 'Mini Versailles.' Formerly the home of the late San Francisco society dame Lee Herbst Gruhn, the five-bedroom, 8,120-square-foot Pacific Heights abode was listed for $12.5M in October of 2011, after which a roller coaster ride of price changes saw it dropped to $9.75M, bounced back to $11.9M after the many-sided refurbishment, and finally brought down to $8.9M after a buyer failed to emerge. You might say the place is going through a bit of an identity crisis, after searching for a new look and coming back with a still unsought-after smattering of them. As with any renewal, old issues were traded in for a host of new ones, but at least in this case, 'boring' isn't one of them.

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) As the temperatures move above freezing and what once fell as snow now comes as rain, our next challenge could be safely getting rid of all that water.
If you're a homeowner, the winter trouble for your roof starts with uneven temperatures.
"Heat released from that attic insulation will warm the shingles along with the sun," said Kevin Wharton, a remodeling specialist with Paul Davis Restorations of Louisville. "That causes that snow or ice to melt and start to run down the shingles. The water literally has nowhere to go."
As the water refreezes when it reaches your eaves and gutters ice dams are formed. The dams push the melting snow back under your shingles and into your walls.
"Unfortunately, there's not a whole lot you can do for it once you have it," Wharton said.
Northern states have companies that dissolve the ice dams with steam heat, but those companies don't exist here. Other suppliers will wire your gutters and downspouts with heating cables, but they aren't found often here in the Mid South. One thing is certain - getting rid of ice dams is no project for the do-it-yourselfer.
"You'll do more damage to your roof if you try to chip it out of the shingles," said. Wharton. "And gutters; you've got hundreds of pounds of ice. There's no way I can take that gutter down without destroying it."
Instead, Wharton preaches proactive steps, like laying down an ice and water shield.
"It's a rubberized membrane that comes in sheets," Wharton said. "A second barrier that will shed the water on down the roof and into the gutter system and it won't leak into the house."
Such barriers will add at least $1,500 to the price of a replacement roof, but Wharton pointed out that is nearly the same amount as your home insurance deductible and he said prevention's cheaper than repair.

NASHVILLE The Pence administration has overseen the six-figure renovation of a Brown County cabin that one political observer calls Indianas Camp David.
Gov. Mike Pence and his family will be the first since former Gov. Evan Bayh to make regular use of Aynes House, a gubernatorial vacation home in Brown County State Park. The five-bedroom cabin received $162,000 in major maintenance work, interior remodeling and new furnishings last fall and has already hosted a gubernatorial staff retreat.
We love family time and the outdoors, so being together in an Indiana state park is one of our favorite things to do, first lady Karen Pence said through a governors spokeswoman.
The Pences, whose three children are in college, havent planned any events or gatherings for the cabin since the remodeling, governors spokeswoman Kara Brooks said, but the first lady made it clear they plan to take advantage of it.
We are proud of the work that was done at Aynes House, and we love going down there, she said through Brooks.
Both Mike and Karen Pence have been visiting Brown County since their childhoods and have spent several nights at various state parks since the 2012 election, Brooks said.
I like the concept that Indiana governors have a retreat, and this in the states flagship park, said Brian Howey, publisher of Howey Politics Indiana. Its like a state version of Camp David.
Named for the family that built it, Aynes House dates to the late 1920s or early 1930s and became a state asset in 1939, according to the Department of Natural Resources.
Theres little recorded history on the house, said Dan Bortner, director of the Division of State Parks and Reservoirs.
My belief is, this thing was acquired to be a governors retreat, Bortner said. He noted that another gubernatorial vacation home at Indiana Dunes was torn down in the 1930s.

State's Camp David' gets a makeover
The Beatrice City Council has approved plans for the proposed city hall remodeling.
City Administrator Tobias Tempelmeyer said the proposed design would increase safety for city hall employees.
"Under the proposed remodel, the north door would become closed and accessible by employees only," he explained. "All the public would then come in the south door... The public would not be allowed to roam throughout the building as they currently are. If they needed to get access to the rest of the building, they'd have to be brought in or buzzed in by an employee."
The new design would also increase accessibility to disabled persons in compliance with standards established by the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.
"The current stairway that we have in the building don't meet ADA requirements, and they don't meet fire code," Tempelmeyer said. "In order to meet those, we had to put in some new stairways. The stairway on the north side led to the conference room being moved south a little bit and enlarged slightly. This facilitated the need to move the restrooms that are currently in the building."
The biggest changes to the basement of the building are in order to meet fire code. These changes include moving a stairway and adding a corridor to the area.
The council voted 6-0 in favor of approving the proposed plans and advertisement of bids for the project, but not without some concern from council members. Ward 2 Council Member Ted Fairbanks said he would have liked the chance to review the plans prior to Monday's meeting.
"I wish that we would have had and opportunity to discuss this at committee," Fairbanks said. "I look at these plans, and they're dated the 23rd of April, last year. I understand this was on the list of things we'd like to see completed for the city, but the first time I really knew about it was when I read in the paper the BPW board had talked about it."
Fairbanks also expressed the issue of public perception. He said with the council recently voting to add a one-half percent sales tax to the May ballot, some residents may have problems with the city spending an estimated $175,000 on building renovations.
"People in the community just don't really understand that this isn't just one huge pot of money," Fairbanks said. "We're in the process of trying to convince the voters of the community to pass this (sales tax) issue because we don't have enough money to do our street department. Most of them just look at this and say 'If you have $175,000 to redo this building, you ought to be putting it into your infrastructure.'"

Council approves City Hall renovation plans
Philips is piloting an intelligent supermarket lighting system that can help shoppers find their groceries based on their location in the store, the company said Monday.
The LED lighting system can be used by retailers to send location-based data to customers via an app, Philips said.

Besides helping users to locate groceries like avocados, coffee and eggs, the system can also be used to send promotional offers to shoppers, which are relevant to their location in the store. Targeted information and discount coupons can be displayed on phones at a precise position in the store when shoppers need it most and are most receptive, Philips said.
The system uses lighting fixtures that form a dense network that acts as a positioning grid, Philips said, adding that each fixture is identifiable and able to communicate its position to an app on a shoppers smart device.
By integrating location services in the lighting system, retailers who want to offer location based services dont have to invest in additional infrastructure, Philips said.
Brick-and-mortar businesses are increasingly showing interest in what customers do inside their walls.
Ballparks in the U.S. for instance have opted for Apples iBeacon technology that extends location-based services on iOS devices indoors. iBeacon can be used to monitor locations of customers using Bluetooth.
Several startups are offering indoor location based services as well. Much like Philips, they generally want to help businesses gather information about their customers, such as their dwell times at a location, and send promotions directly to mobile phones.
Philips is currently testing its system with retailers.
