PADUCAH, KyJust 31 days now until spring and many of you are counting down! Temperatures are getting warmer, and there is some rain in the forecast, that will probably turn your yard into a slushy and muddy mess.

Landscape professionals and homeowners said they are ready for spring, even if it means some extra yard work.

Today the sun was shining, the snow and ice packed down is finally thawing.

Crystal Sanders owns James Sanders Nursery and said people need to start preparing their yards now.

"We go around and mulch all the plant material around the root systems to protect them...If you didn't get seeding done in the fall, it's a great time to start seeding now," said Sanders.

Homeowner Talmadge Martin takes pride in his yard and says he is ready for spring.

"We have had enough of it. We've had more snow than I can ever remember," said Martin.

All the snow in Martin's yard has created mess, that will take months to firm back up.

"You can walk around in some other places in my yard, back out back, it may go over your shoe tops," said Martin.

Both homeowners and landscape professionals said they are tired of winter.

Weather makes for muddy mess for homeowners

Dated, 60s-style comforters, dark green walls and old light fixtures marked the inside of the former Randolph Park Hotel and Suites.

After a yearlong closure for a top-to-bottom, $4.5 million renovation, the building at 102 N. Alvernon Way has reopened as a bright and modern La Quinta Inns & Suites.

We made the conscious decision to close the hotel so we could more effectively renovate it, said Jerry Fischer, president of Desert Hospitality Management.

The company manages the property for Humberto Lopezs HSL Properties, which owns it.

Fischer expects a 70-percent occupancy rate once the hotel has its grand opening at the end of February.

The hotel is now open to the public, though there is some ongoing construction.

We wanted to get the doors open, get people in, and get to doing business, general manager Amy Wilcox said.

Thanks to La Quintas location, guests have access to a variety of activities in midtown Tucson.

Nearby, there are Reid Park and Reid Park Zoo, Randolph Golf Complex, El Con Mall with its shopping, food and movie theaters and 12 restaurants, all within walking distance.

The university and the Tucson Medical Center are also just 3 miles away.

Autumn Hill Nursery in Hickory Flat at 4256 Earney Road offers gardeners a wealth of tools to have a beautiful yard. Many homeowners are looking for answers on how to get landscaping in shape after the frigid temperatures, and owner Eric Hill has advice to assist. Special to the Tribune

With spring just around the corner, gardeners and homeowners are looking for answers.

Eric Hill who, along with his wife, Kari, owns Autumn Hill Nursery in Hickory Flat and Autumn Hill Four Seasons Gift & Garden in Canton has some expert advice on those gardening concerns.

The two have 22 years in the business, helping their customers make the most in their yards and gardens.

Eric Hill offered some advice on how to handle the recent bad weather and its effects on the yard.

Many of us have had plants damaged by the single digit temperatures we experienced in January. The questions are how much was damaged, is it permanent, and what do you do about it, Eric Hill said. A plant suffering cold damage falls into one of three scenarios. The leaves are damaged, and they will simply drop off and new ones will grow; all or part of certain branches may have been killed; the entire plant met its demise.

Hill said for many of those questions, the only option is to wait and see.

Time will tell. We can simply wait until later in the spring and see what branches put out new growth, and then prune out the rest, while removing any shrubs that are completely dead, he said.

Hill said in the weeks ahead, many gardeners will be working to get their plants back in shape.

If you want to start getting your yard back in shape in March, but dont know what to prune, use these two simple tests. Scratch the bark of the branch with your thumbnail or pocket knife. Just below the surface the tissue should be a light green/yellow green. If it is, the branch is still alive. If it is brown, it is dead, and you can work your way down the branch until you see green, then prune out the dead, Hill said.

Submitted Gulfshore Homes has selected Naples-based Design West to provide interior design, furnishings and accessories for its Aviara model in Murano at Miromar Lakes.

Gulfshore Homes has selected Naples-based Design West to provide interior design, furnishings and accessories for its Aviara model estate home under construction in Murano, a waterfront estate home neighborhood on the Peninsula at Miromar Lakes Beach & Golf Club. Designers Alexis Barrett and Liz Grina will be implementing the design. Installation is expected to be completed in May at which time the home will be open to the public to tour.

The great room floor plan in this two-story residence offers 4,210 square feet of air-conditioned space with a master suite, two guest bedrooms, four full baths, a powder bath and a cabana bath.

Other features in the Aviara estate home include a library with built-ins and two sets of double French doors, a great room with pocket sliders that completely open the room to the outdoor living area, a formal dining room, and a morning kitchen with a sink and under-counter wine refrigerator. The model also includes a detached third-car garage, which is standard on all Gulfshore Homes residences in Murano.

Interior design will take on a casual California coastal theme with many natural elements, including wood and stone floors, to build in an air of elegant sophistication. The color palette will be a soft blend of celadon, cream and aqua with the high contrast of rich espresso-finished wood tones.

Light stone floors and darker woods in the study and master suite will showcase a high-contrast theme, while backgrounds, finishes and subtle color palettes will also play a role in reaching that vision. Fabrics include soft-tones, watered-down blues and warm grays, while neutral tones and soft colors in pillows, artwork and trim will be incorporated.

The furniture will be transitional, which appeals to homebuyers who are used to a more traditional home but want something newer and up to date, Barrett explained. The furniture will have a touch of coastal as well, which many of our clients here look for whether for their vacation home or primary residence, she said.

Other features in the estate model include crown molding throughout that will complement 12-inch baseboards, coffered ceilings and arched openings (per plan). Solid-core, 8-foot interior doors with lever handles will be available in brushed nickel, oil-rubbed bronze or pewter. Other features include Andersen impact-resistant wood windows and doors, noise suppression between floors and walls, and a paver driveway.

The kitchen will have stainless steel Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances, a breakfast nook, double oven, Meile dishwasher, six-burner natural gas cooktop, vegetable refrigerator, and custom maple cabinetry. The kitchen also includes a center island and breakfast bar with granite counter tops.

The master suite has a sitting area, walk-in his-and-her wardrobes with custom-designed closet interiors, and a door that leads to the outdoor living area. The master bath will have a whirlpool tub, a clear glass shower enclosure tiled to the ceiling, full-height mirrors over 36-inch granite-topped his-and-her vanities and a makeup counter.
