Breakout at Australia's PNG detention centre

    - February 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A number of asylum-seekers have been injured and some arrested after escaping from an Australian immigration detention centre on Papua New Guinea's Manus Island.

Australian Immigration Minister Scott Morrison said on Monday that 35 people escaped onSunday evening, but that they were quickly rounded up by private security contractors atthe facility, one of two remote Pacific camps used in Canberra's punitiveoff-shore detention policy.

"A full face-to-photo identification has been conducted and all transfereeshave been accounted for," Morrison said, according to AFP news agency.

If you don't want to be in immigration detention, don't come illegally to Australia.

    Tony Abbott, Australian Prime Minister

Eight detainees were arrested over the disturbance and Morrison said 19 were presented to the medical centre for treatment, "none of whom were exhibitinglife threatening conditions".

"As at this morning, five of those transferees remained at the clinic. Anumber of G4S (security contractor) staff also sustained minor injuries", he added.

Morrison said power poles and fences were toppled during the fracas and bunk beds were smashed to fashion makeshift weapons, but there was no destruction of accommodation.

Though security staff used "personal protection gear", Morrison said no weapons were used.

Any asylum seeker arriving by boat or intercepted at sea is transferred to Manus or Nauru for processing and resettlement outside Australia.

Asylum seekers arrested at PNG centre

    - February 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

AAP Asylum seekers have been arrested after a fight at the detention centre on Manus Island in PNG

Nineteen asylum seekers have been treated for injuries and eight arrested after a riot at the Australian-run detention centre on Manus Island.

Immigration Minister Scott Morrison has confirmed reports that about 35 asylum seekers broke down a fence around the facility before clashing with security personnel on Sunday.

Fences were broken down inside the compound that houses 1300 transferees, while bunk beds were broken up and pieces were thrown at camp security during the hectic hour-long stand-off.

Mr Morrison said officials were meeting with detainees to answer questions posed in early February.

The officials left when the transferees started chanting, the minister said.

"The centre remained calm but tense until approximately 1815 local time when about 35 transferees from Oscar compound absconded from the centre," he said.

They were quickly found and returned, and the camp was secured by 7.30pm.

"Minor incidents continued into the evening and tensions remained, all compounds were calm by 11pm," Mr Morrison said.

Of the 19 asylum seekers who received medical attention at the facility following the riot, five were still under medical care, he said.

Tunnel shows us we're not there yet on minority contracting

    - February 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Commentary: Progress has been much too slow.

    Sun, Feb 16, 8:07 a.m.

Final repair plans are weeks away, but the tunnel contractor is hoping to access and repair the machine's bearing seals from above ground.

    Fri, Feb 7, 5:09 p.m.

The contractor on Seattle's deep bore tunnel says they've found another issue with the boring machine, which has been nearly-idle for 2-months. Cost? Time delay? Who can say?

Sometimes I think things have really changed in regard to minorities and opportunities in the business world. Then sometimes I think nothing has changed.

Take the recent report that the builders of the Highway 99 tunnel are accused of being in breach of contract because they have not offered enough contracts to women and minority firms, as required by federal law. Bertha may be stuck in the mud as it tries to dig the tunnel, but the Seattle Tunnel Contractors seem to be stuck in the past.

I feel so discouraged about it all because of my past reporting. I came to Seattle in mid-1967 and one of my first reporting assignments was to cover the civil rights beat. That included some interesting press conference with the local Black Panther group here, but one of the most dramatic issues I covered was the efforts of the Central Contractors Association.

What were they trying to do? Get more contracts for minority firms from public works projects in the region. Sounds familiar.

Part of my beat included Walt Hundley and the Seattle Model Cities Program, part of the War on Poverty. Hundley encouraged black contractors to organize to gain some of the lucrative contracts being offered at the time that required minority participation. A group was formed, the Central Contractors Association, and they selected Tyree Scott, an electrician, as their leader.
