AT&T, Comcast seek share of home security market

    - February 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

In a 3,200-square-foot home in Milford, Mich., Chris Dierkes showed off one of AT&Ts latest service offerings: home security and automation.

Dierkes demonstrated how to turn down the thermostat using an application on his iPad.

The temperature is set to 72 degrees, the AT&T sales manager said last week as he slid his finger across the tablet screen. If you want to dip this down to 70, you can.

In an effort to find new revenue streams, AT&T, Comcast and other companies are taking on established home security companies such as ADT, which dominates the $13 billion home security market. The players new to the security business are hoping to leverage their data networks and existing customer relationships.

Moreover, in addition to home security, they are selling services that just a few years ago were too expensive for many people to afford, including the ability to remotely lock and unlock doors, see whats going on through surveillance cameras, and even shut off the water.

Wireless technology and increased competition has dramatically lowered the cost of installing equipment and allowed homeowners to integrate more automation features, said Chris Heaton, the vice president of membership for the Texas-based Electronic Security Association.

The market for this has taken off, he added.

Heaton said he expects the new competition to continue to increase and the number of homeowners nationally who have home security systems to grow from 20 percent to 30 percent or more in the next decade.

AT&T charges an installation fee for its Digital Life system, and then a monthly charge starting at about $30 depending on the services.

The network allows us to overlay more products and services and take the handheld devices and create new uses for them, said Greg Clark, an AT&T regional vice president of external affairs.

Security Breach Incident At Woodlands Checkpoint 'Not Acceptable', Says Singapore DPM

    - February 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

By Tengku Noor Shamsiah Tengku Abdullah

SINGAPORE, Feb 17 (Bernama) -- Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs Teo Chee Hean says the security breach at the Woodlands checkpoint last month involving a Malaysian woman and the subsequent action resulting in her arrest three days later are 'not acceptable'.

He said the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority of Singapore (ICA) and police ground commanders had made an error of judgement and classified the incident, which occurred on Jan 17, as a less serious one - an immigration offence.

In an oral reply to parliamentary questions on the matter, Teo, who is also the coordinating minister for national security, said appropriate disciplinary action would be taken against the officers and their supervisors.

Relating the incident, Teo said that on Jan 17, 2014, at 1.58 pm, a 27-year-old woman arrived at the Woodlands checkpoint in her Malaysian car.

The woman, from Pendang, Kedah, drove past the ICA officer without going through the mandatory checks by tailgating the car immediately in front of hers, and slipping past the drop-arm barrier, he said.

She was then detained for crashing through the security barrier at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Jan 20, he added.

"The ICA and police ground commanders made a serious error of judgement in deciding to treat this intrusion as a less serious immigration offence, instead of a serious breach of border security, as required in the protocol.

"This was a major reason for the subsequent inadequate response which resulted in the vehicle and driver not being detected and arrested much earlier," Teo said, adding that both ground commanders had been redeployed to non-operational posts pending disciplinary action.

He said that if, however, a vehicle did make an unauthorised exit from the checkpoint, there was a security protocol for the police and ICA to treat the incident as a breach of border security and issue a high-priority alert to all ground resources.

Arizona HVAC Contractor Announces New Cost-Efficient AZ Air Conditioning and Heat Pump Maintenance Program

    - February 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Gilbert, Arizona (PRWEB) February 15, 2014

Buyers who look for the core of efficient Gilbert, Arizona heating and cooling soon uncover a well-planned and well-executed air conditioning and heat pump maintenance program. When home HVAC systems fail, comfort levels stumble and heating and cooling budgets crumble. Scheduling routine Arizona A/C, HP and Furnace maintenance saves money.

Warm air is near. A weather change is in the making, and the Arizona sun will soon pump out new record-breaking temperatures. Some unprepared East Valley homes, perhaps even many, will experience serious A/C or HP failures. To help reduce the calamities, Arizona HVAC contractor, ACH is offering a new cost-efficient Arizona air conditioning and heat pump maintenance program.

ACH, a Recognized Leader in HVAC Installation and HVAC Maintenance

With over twenty years open-door experience in the HVAC installation, repair and maintenance industry, American Cooling and Heating provides the equipment service Arizona residents deserve and at cost-effective competitive pricing. The Company employs drug-free skill-rated technicians with extended knowledge in all major brands of HVAC equipment, including:

Contracting an East Valley air conditioning maintenance plan through American Cooling and Heating ensures long-term reduced pricing for annual and/or semi-annual system upkeep. Calculated unit maintenance reduces Arizona A/C, HP and furnace repair bills. It also helps residents regulate the yearly expenses for peak equipment operation.

According to Energy Gov, routinely maintained HVAC equipment consumes 10% to 25% less energy than systems forced to function under shoddy upkeep. Annual or semi-annual tune-ups promote equipment durability and energy-efficient functionality. Among other key points of service, the American Cooling and Heating Arizona AC and HP maintenance plan examines home systems for compliance with:

Reports from the Environmental Protection Agency indicate that a dirty air filter can increase the cost of system airflow by as much as $200 per 10,000. Furthermore, a poorly maintained system forces additional expense due to clogged drain pans, narrowed air ducts and dirty heating and cooling coils. Heating, Ventilation, and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) systems are designed to ensure quality indoor air via a combination of regulated ventilation, adequate filtration and efficient thermal comfort. Effective A/C and HP maintenance ensures compliance to these requirements. Its a matter of comfort and operating costs.

With American Cooling and Heating, consumers can get 24/7 emergency HVAC repair services throughout the state of Arizona. But by applying the American Cooling and Heating Arizona Air Conditioning and Heat Pump maintenance program, East Valley residents also get the comfort of peak system performance. Now is the time to save on the cost of unexpected service calls as well as the frustration of an overheated home.

At Home: Know when to repair or replace

    - February 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Knowing when to repair and then when to replace your heating and air conditioning systems are things all homeowners have to face sooner or later.

Greg DeBacker, owner of Debackers, Inc., 1520 S.E. 10th, of Topeka, said he prefers that his technicians always try to repair a problem whenever possible instead of replacing a whole system. He said thats because his staff can make more service calls and it keeps customers costs down.

DeBacker said a homeowner can do several things to keep their home safe and reduce the chances for mishaps requiring costly repairs.

DeBacker said changing your furnaces air filter on a regular basis is an easy and inexpensive way to maintain your unit.

Especially during extremely cold times, change the filter more frequently, he said, and dont run your furnace without the filter. That causes us a lot of headaches.

DeBacker said filters are inexpensive so its better to change out the used ones with new ones instead of trying to clean a used filter over and over again.

A lot of people try to save money that way, he said, but thats not a good way to save money.

Keeping the house safe with a gas furnace, DeBacker said, should always come first.

With a gas furnace, our number one concern is safety, DeBacker said, adding that about 95-percent of homes in the Topeka area use natural gas. We recommend every home have a carbon monoxide detector in it. If you have carbon monoxide, it (gas) might be burning improperly.

DeBacker said a homeowner can do several things to make sure the gas furnace stays in good working condition.

Seeding direction a tool in weed fight

    - February 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Glen Riethmuller Catherine Borger, of DAFWA, measuring light available to annual ryegrass in the inter-row space of a wheat crop.

Seeding direction can help crops outcompete winter weeds, according to research by the Department of Agriculture and Food WA.

Department researcher Catherine Borger said trials had shown shading annual ryegrass reduced its growth and seed production.

"Crops and weeds compete for light, particularly during winter," Dr Borger said. "As demonstrated in five out of six trials carried out at Merredin, Wongan Hills and Katanning, annual ryegrass seed production is reduced when the weed receives less sunlight.

"An east-west crop orientation offers a free and environmentally friendly method of reducing the growth of annual ryegrass.

"Wheat or barley crops sown in an east-west direction, instead of north-south, generate more shade in the inter-row space in crops."

Dr Borger said with weeds continuing to develop resistance against herbicides, in-crop weed control with grass-selective herbicides could be difficult.

"Sowing east-west crops reduces the light available to the annual ryegrass in the inter-row space, which reduced annual ryegrass seed production by an average of 51 per cent," she said.

"The effectiveness of this technique depends on seasonal conditions, such as how quickly the annual ryegrass germinates and how tall or competitive the crop is."

She said the east-west crop orientation may be impractical for farmers whose paddock did not allow east-west sowing, or farmers who do not use auto-steer. In addition, this method does not apply where weeds grow taller than the crop.
