Cheek of it: Gerroa's Bum Tree to get chop

    - February 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    By BEN LANGFORDFeb. 9, 2014, 8:30 p.m.

POLL: Gerroa's ''Bum Tree'' will be chopped down in a move the council says will make the Gerroa Road corner safer.

Gerroa residents are incensed by Shoalhaven City Council's decision - in a confidential meeting - to chop down the iconic "Bum Tree" along with many other large gums on Gerroa Road near Berry.

The move was proposed to make the corner safer - it has been the scene of several accidents - and involves clearing six metres of all trees at the site.

This would mean the end of the well-known Bum Tree, which has growths protruding from its trunk in the shape of two buttocks, and on which some local wit has for many years painted the word "BUM" and an arrow.

Gerroa Environmental Protection Society president Warren Holder said the Bum Tree, a type of eucalypt called a blackbutt, is one of many that are important habitat for local wildlife, including sugar gliders.

They have now been invited by the council for a consultation meeting this afternoon to find out more about the decision, and to discuss options for using "part of the tree in an alternative form".

But today residents will hold a protest at the site.

The thought of a "bumectomy" has some locals horrified.

Mr Holder said it was "ridiculous" to invite residents for consultation on what to do with pieces of the tree once felled.

A walk through Indias rich heritage

    - February 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

It was an interesting blend of historical narrative and knowledge on contemporary conservation work for all those who assembled at the Humayuns Tomb, a world heritage site, on Saturday morning.

A group of people from different walks of life were explained the rationale behind certain architectural design patterns and gardens of the Mughal era. Most importantly, they were updated about the significant restoration work undertaken by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture, which has also improved the socio-economic conditions of people living in the Hazrat Nizamuddin Basti.

Part of The Hindu Lit for Life, the event aimed at shedding light on the Mughal era was thankfully not a monologue but an interactive one as curious heritage lovers bombarded with questions AKTC project director Ratish Nanda, who spearheaded the restoration work of the Humayuns Tomb. Mr. Nanda succinctly explained the work done so far by his organisation.

The participants were first taken to the Isa Khans Garden Tomb, which pre-dates the Humayuns Tomb. We are standing within the large Humayuns Tomb complex. It is an ensemble of the 16 Century garden tomb. How many of you have read the Baburnama? In his memoir, Mughal emperor Babur was critical of the lack of enclosed gardens in Hindustan. Isa Khan was a noble in the court of Sher Shah Suri. It is the only octagonal tomb surviving of that period, said Mr. Nanda.

Reconstruction of the collapsed portions of the gateway, restoration of the finial on the dome and structural repairs to the garden retaining wall have been undertaken as part of the conservation work at the Isa Khans Garden Tomb.

While explaining the significant work carried out, Mr. Nanda was critical of the nasty reconstruction work undertaken during the past 150 years. He said using inappropriate construction material such as cement had led to deterioration of heritage buildings.

Pointing out that Aga Khan offered to restore the garden of Humayuns Tomb on the 50 anniversary of Indias Independence, the AKTC project director said cement concrete laid in the tomb during the 20 Century to prevent water ingress was removed from the roof.

As cement plaster was accelerating deterioration, we had to apply lime plaster. The conservation work was carried out to restore the architectural integrity. There were lightning conductors in canopies. The dome was leaking. So we had to fill the joint with limestone.

As part of the conservation work, master craftsmen from Uzbekistan trained youngsters from the Hazrat Nizamuddin Basti in the art of traditional tile making which had been lost in India.

During the interactive session, Mr. Nanda revealed that Mughal emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar had taken refuge at the Humayuns Tomb thinking the British would not dare to intrude inside.

ECB sheds more light on KP axe

    - February 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

England Specials. Click here to bet.

Pietersen confirmed his England career was over on Tuesday after it was announced he would not be in the squads for the tour of the Caribbean and the ICC World Twenty20.

The ECB had been at great pains to make only the most careful public comment about the reasons for Pietersen's dismissal, prompting calls for transparency including from former England captains Ian Botham and Michael Vaughan.

And a statement issued jointly by the ECB and the Professional Cricketers' Association on Sunday evening read: "The ECB recognises the significant contribution Kevin has made to England teams over the last decade. He has played some of the finest innings ever produced by an England batsman.

"However, the England team needs to rebuild after the whitewash in Australia. To do that we must invest in our captain Alastair Cook and we must support him in creating a culture in which we can be confident he will have the full support of all players, with everyone pulling in the same direction and able to trust each other.

"It is for those reasons that we have decided to move on without Kevin Pietersen."

While seeking to bring clarity, the ECB statement raises further questions about the whole episode, with further speculation inevitable regarding the reasons for the organisation's lack of trust in Pietersen.

Specific details were conspicuous by their absence in the statement, which acknowledged "both parties remain bound by confidentiality provisions".

Pietersen, though, certainly has a history of clashing with authority figures in the England set-up.

He successfully lobbied in January 2009 for the removal of then coach Peter Moores, which also cost him his own position as captain.

Study sheds light on sex trafficking in Singapore

    - February 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

An independentstudy of sex trafficking victims has shed some light on the murky world of the unregulated sex trade here.

It found that victims from the Philippines were lured to Singapore by friends and acquaintances on the pretext of jobs such as waitressing and hostessing, before ending up in nightclubs.

Some Indonesian victims, meanwhile, were already prostitutes in Batam before coming here to ply their trade on the streets and budget hotels, under the watchful eyes of local pimps.

The 144-page study, released last week, was conducted by Singapore-based academic Sallie Yea, an assistant professor of geography at the National Institute of Education, who interviewed 87 women tricked into coming to Singapore.

Slightly more sex trafficking reports last year

THE police received 53 sex trafficking reports last year, up slightly from 52 in 2012 and 43 in 2011.

While the rest are still under investigation, five have been dealt with in court.

One of them involved a 17-year-old from China, who was beaten and drugged before being brought here last May to work as a prostitute.

The minor was made to serve 150 clients in 15 days.

Her pimp from China, 37-year-old Tang Huisheng, was sentenced to six years in jail last October.
