Pupils design bright hoardings ahead of old Tyrls police station demolition

Schoolchildren have been adding a splash of colour to Bradford by painting hoardings around a prominent building due to be demolished.

Contractors will start to pull down the remaining half of the old Tyrls police station, in City Park, next month.

Bradford Council bosses hope the site will be redeveloped into grade A office space, but to to make sure visitors to City Park are left with something pleasant to look at in the meantime, children from Thornton Primary and St Oswalds C of E Primary schools have been using the hoardings as a giant canvas for a festival-themed artwork.

University of Bradford student Leanne Marsh, who has a child at Thornton Primary, came up with the idea of creating white silhouettes among the paint splashes, and adorning them with festival-themed objects like wellies and masquerade masks.

She said: "They've had a brilliant time."

Her son, nine-year-old Ronnie, said: "It was really good. My favourite bit was when we were splashing the paint."

The hoardings will also be decorated with pictures the children created in school as part of a competition.

The picture judged the best was by Shahida Hannan of St Oswald's, who won a family 'swim and slide' voucher for Bradford Councils Richard Dunn sports centre. Runner-up Harley Brooks, of Thornton Primary, won a family swim voucher.

The contractor, ISG Construction, organised the event and provided the paint, brushes and protective aprons.
