Waltham Lido Pool is reopening on Saturday 17 January, with a Welcome Back Waltham pool party on Sunday 18 January.

The Christchurch City Council facility would attract more than 17,000 people each summer before its closure due to earthquake damage. Facilities include a shallow water lido leisure area for young children, a toddlers' pool, a lane pool for lap swimming, a hydro-slide and a landscaped, grassed BBQ space.

David Adamson, the Councils Director Council Facilities and Infrastructure Rebuild, says the pools reopening is an exciting event that the community has been waiting a long time for.

"Wed scheduled a soft opening for Monday 12 January, but some minor hiccups have meant weve moved it to Saturday 17. Needless to say, people in the area know what a great facility this is, and for them Sundays pool party has been a long time coming. Weve had more than 70 people down there this week working hard to have things ready in time for it. The pool looks tremendous and it is credit to the contractors, consultants, staff and subcontractors who have worked tirelessly right through the Christmas break.

"As well as fixing and strengthening the pool, weve taken the opportunity to revamp things a bit, and make effective use of recycled materials," Mr Adamson says.

"In addition to the upgrades - new signage, landscaping, roofing, re-sizing the plant room, fencing, painting, shade sails and other small improvements - weve included the old reception desk from the Lyttelton service centre as well as wall brackets from QEII Park.

"The resulting refurbished pool will be something the community and Council can be proud of."

Sponsors MORE FM and Streets will be at the party with giveaways, competitions and prizes to keep the kids entertained. Details of all the summer pool parties will be broadcast on MORE FM (92.1FM).
