We have been struck by gales, blizzards and flooding, but so far winter has spared most of us the worst of the icy temperatures until now.

The country is to be gripped by a deep freeze that will last for days, with a bitterly cold weekend ahead and some areas dropping to -10C by Monday.

If the predictions are right, it will be England's coldest spell for two years.

As the deep low pressure system responsible for this week's gales moves away - which flipped over a caravan in Cumbria yesterday - it will suck bitter Arctic winds in from the North.
