A hard hat was killed Monday afternoon when he became trapped in a dirt hole on a construction site at what used to be Pastis restaurant in the Meatpacking District, cops said.

The 22-year-old man was working at 9-19 9th Avenue at about 12:15 p.m. when unstable soil gave way around him and he became stuck inside a hole, law enforcement sources said.

Emergency workers responding to the scene discovered the man unconscious and unresponsive, cops said.

He was rushed to Lenox Hill Hospital where he later died from his injuries, according to police.

The medical examiner will determine the cause of death and police are investigating.

A stop work order was temporarily put in place at the site due to unsafe conditions, according to the Department of Buildings website.

Soil collapse has occurred, causing worker fatality, the complaint read.
