Thirty-five years ago, the owner of the home at 2947 Macomb St. NW, in the Districts Cleveland Park neighborhood, fell in love with her home at first sight.
The front porch, the beamed ceiling in the living room, the window seat and pale stained-glass windows grabbed her heart, while the tree-lined street and neighboring front porches provided a setting conducive to building camaraderie between her family and others in the area.
After 3 1/2 decades, the home has nearly doubled in size and has been completely restored and renovated.
Built in 1916, this Cleveland Park home is on the market for $1,350,000. Connecticut Avenue, the Cleveland Park Metro station, the Cleveland Park Library, shops, restaurants and the old-fashioned two-level Uptown Theater are all within a few minutes stroll from this residence. Also nearby are the National Zoo, parks, playgrounds and additional shops and restaurants on Wisconsin Avenue.
Macomb Street, possibly one of the loveliest residential streets in the District, is lined with single-family homes graced with elegant trim, flowering shrubs, trees and garden beds. This home has been professionally landscaped and includes both front and back spaces for enjoying spring, summer and fall evenings.
A flagstone walkway leads to the front porch, a cheerful space with red-painted wood flooring, a beadboard ceiling, columns and a skylight to allow more sunlight to filter onto the porch. Adjacent to the home is a private drive with space for off-street parking that leads to a detached one-car garage with a new roof. A flagstone patio wraps around the back of the house and includes a low stone wall with a few steps up to garden beds shaded by trees. The property is fully fenced.
A wood front door with elegant glass insets opens into the foyer, which has hardwood flooring and wood steps with wrought-iron railings to the upper level. Next to the foyer is the open living room and dining room, which have a wood-beamed ceiling and pastel stained-glass windows that come from a church. At the front of the living room are a window seat and built-in cabinets and shelves under a triple window. The living room has a wood-burning fireplace.
At the back of the house, the owner bumped out a narrow room into a spectacular two-story great room wrapped in windows on two sides. Floor-to-ceiling prairie-style windows form the back wall of this room, with transoms and a round window tucked under the peak of the cathedral ceiling. The windows frame a view of the back patio and gardens. One wall is covered with built-in cabinets and shelving for books, artwork and entertainment systems.
Nearby is a renovated powder room with a modern glass-topped vanity with a steel sink.
The kitchen, which has hardwood flooring, granite counters, stainless steel appliances, maple cabinets and a distinctive tile backsplash was renovated last year. Storage space has been maximized with a wall of custom-built floor-to-ceiling cabinets and additional cabinets with glass fronts. The kitchen has two sinks for efficient cooking.

CEBU CITYThe prayers of nuns at Asilo dela Milagrosa church have been answered.
The proposed flyover project in front of the church will no longer push through after a traffic impact study prepared by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Project Monitoring Office showed that it was not feasible.
Instead, the DPWH recommended that an underpass be built to ease traffic at the intersection of Gorordo Avenue and Archbishop Reyes Avenue where the church compound is located.
If an underpass were to be built, both sides of Gorordo Avenue would have to be widened to accommodate two additional lanes, one on each side.
Nuns of the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, who run the church and orphanage inside the compound on Gorordo Avenue, resorted to prayer power in fighting off the proposed flyover project.
The nuns expressed fears that the flyover would disrupt church services. The proposed flyover would have eaten at least 3 meters off the church grounds including part of the garden where a grotto of the Blessed Virgin Mary is located and part of the churchs front yard.
The flyover on the intersection of General Maxilom Avenue and M.J. Cuenco Avenue here is likely to push through, however, after its proponents settle right of way issues.
Carmelito Tizon, of the DPWHs Project Monitoring Office, gave a briefing on the impact study on the project at the DPWH Central Visayas office on Tuesday.
Tizon said the impact study was prepared to determine the traffic characteristics of certain intersections and identify solutions to bottlenecks.

For 14 years, she was a successful architect, designing and supervising the construction of high-rise commercial buildings in Singapore.
Nestled in the heart of Singapore is the Wesley Methodist Church, where she found her true calling.
Today the Rev. Norma (Nory) Leachon is an architect of souls.
Leachon, a citizen of Singapore and a native of the Philippines, graduated from the Boston University School of Theology May 19 and will begin her ministry at the Holbrook United Methodist Church Sunday, July 1.
This is the day her vision for the Holbrook UMC will begin to unfold.
For a vision, you must know the congregation first. I have met five people, and they are very nice, Leachon said. We are a small church, but we have so much richness in us. Even though the budget is difficult, there is so much richness in the people. They would like to grow the church.
She was appointed to Holbrook UMC June 7.
The bishop chose to send me here because he felt that my talents and gifts will be useful in Holbrook, Leachon said.
Leachon describes herself as a city girl.
It was not easy to give up the corporate life. I feel this is a different kind of life. My focus is my ministry. Im very blessed. I think I will like Holbrook, she said.

A pillar of the Noxapater community, Liberty Baptist Church is receiving blessings in the form of a new parsonage.
Thanks to the kindheartedness and hard work of two mission groups and funds raised by the church, the new parsonage is now becoming a reality. The parsonage, which is the house provided by a church for its pastor, will be located right beside the old parsonage.
Liberty Baptist Church Pastor Jim Pender and wife Loretta will be the new residents of the parsonage upon its completion. Pastor Pender gave a brief history of the old parsonage, which will be removed after the construction of the new one.
The original parsonage was built 60 years ago, Pender said. The original parsonage was built by church members from that time period. A lot of the wood that the old parsonage is constructed with came from the property itself. And some of the lumber came from the old Liberty school that was here years ago. So this will be just another phase of history here at Liberty.
As with any older structure, the need for some type of maintenance arose. A couple of years ago, we ran into the realization that the old parsonage was in need of a new roof, with it having so many problems, Pender said. The parsonage, being 60 years old, was bound to run into problems. Over a period of time, it was determined the most feasible thing would be to build a new pastorium. We started raising funds and wanted to get to a specific point in fundraising before we actually got started with the building program.
Once the funds were acquired, the church would receive help in the form of the Mississippi Chapter of Campers on Mission, a national fellowship of Christian Campers who participate in mission activities. Campers on Mission is mostly made up of retired but professional people such as electricians, carpenters, and others, Pender said. We even have a plumber who is actually a member from our church.
Campers on a Mission decided to incorporate the help of another fellow missionary group to assist them with the project. Mississippi Campers on Mission, which I am a member of, knew of and have worked with Westwood Tools of Ministry, Pender said. They recommended that the Westwood group to come in and do the framing as well as the roof and shingles for the project.
Westwood Tools of Ministry is based out of the Westwood Baptist Church in Alabaster, AL. The group is comprised of several churches that travel on missions to assist other Baptist churches all over the United States.
The churches that comprise Westwood Tools of Ministry besides Westwood are County Line Baptist Church in Mississippi, Liberty Baptist Church in Columbiana, AL, Indian Grave Baptist Church in Billingsley, AL, Hillsboro Baptist Church in Hillsboro, and St. Thomas the Apostle in Montevallo, AL.

Plan could create privately owned, upscale apartment on SDSU campus
BROOKINGS South Dakota State University could take a step forward this week with a plan that has been controversial in Brookings: to create a privately owned, upscale apartment building in the northwest corner of its campus.
The South Dakota Board of Regents, meeting today through Friday at Dakota State University in Madison, will vote Thursday on a recommendation by Executive Director Jack Warner. If approved, it would authorize the board president to appoint an ad hoc committee to issue a request for proposals (RFP) to build the apartments, evaluate proposals and make a recommendation to the board.
SDSU is requesting this in order to expand student housing through a ground lease to a private investor, who would assume full responsibility to finance, construct, operate and maintain the apartment building.
The object of the arrangement would be to provide for student housing without creating any obligation that would affect the debt capacity of the university or the board and without any adverse effect on the financial rating of the university or of the boards consolidated, multi-institutional revenue system, the boards agenda says.
Warner recommends the RFP state that acceptance of any proposal will be contingent upon confirmation by one or more rating agencies selected by the board that the financial commitments for the construction, operation and maintenance of the facility, from inception through termination of the ground lease and associated development and operating agreements, will not reduce the debt capacity of the university or the board and will have no adverse effect on the financial rating of the university or of the Boards consolidated, multi-institutional revenue system.
Part of master plan
According to SDSUs Updated Residential Life and Dining Services Master Plan for 2011-2018, this apartment building is planned as one step in the formation of an upper-division and graduate student neighborhood.
The university also plans to set aside 320 beds in Bailey and Berg apartments for upper-division students (these apartments would be modernized during Phase III of the plan), and to dedicate 132 beds in Waneta Hall and 52 beds in Wecota Annex to single-occupancy rooms for upper-division students.
The new apartment building would be located west of Medary Avenue, bounded by the Agricultural Heritage Museum on the south, Medary Avenue on the east and parking lots on the north and west.

The 4th of July is all about the parties. On rooftops, porches and patios everywhere, Americans are firing up grills in preparation for our country's birthday, serving up tasty food and, of course drinks.
Instead of sipping on microbrews, expertly mixed cocktails or fine bottles of wine, why not bring a bit of nostalgia to the celebration with Jell-O shooters. These vodka-soaked squares of gelatin are all grown up since your college days and have morphed into tasty treats of sophistication.
It's true, the Jell-O shooter is back with a vengeance. The molecular mixology craze combined with the push among many higher-end bartenders to use fresh ingredients and find new and unique takes on cocktails have driven them to mine the bizarre world of gelatin. But no longer are these the day-glo concoctions found in the dixie cups of yore. No, these are made with the greatest of care, freshest of ingredients and with a sense of fun and whimsy that even the most demented frat boy intent on whipping up a batch of pina colada Jell-O shots would be hard pressed to match.
And best of all, they're available in bars and restaurants across the country, not to mention easy enough to whip up in your own kitchen.
The Gin & Tonic
Perhaps the quintessential summer drink, it was almost inevitable that this classic was mixed into gel form. And who better to do it than Michelle Palm, the woman who wrote the book on Jell-O shooters, literally. The author of Jelly Shot Test Kitchen, Palm has made a habit of translating a wide variety of cocktails into jiggly forms. Starting with a blog, she documented her search for gelatinized inebriation and eventually scored a book deal, where her catalog of boozy snacks is photographed to perfection. The blog continues on as well, her friends enjoying the fruits of her experimentation far too much to allow her to stop. Not that Palm minds, saying, I'll keep posting recipes as long as people have an interest, and probably for a good long time after that. It's terrifically fun.

The Watermelon Shooter
While Palm wrote the book, the Internet abounds with how-to's on mixing up your own gelatin libations. Thom Scher, director of marketing for wikiHow.com, is justifiably proud of his site's catalog of slippery shooters. While the site features everything from caffeine Jello shots to Easter egg Jello shots, one of the most popular versions, according to Scher, is, a simple and delicious treat that's a step up from a normal college shooter, using muddled watermelon and premium vodka to take a familiar fraternity treat and turn it into something special.

The professional power-washing company has been in business for 12 years, according to its president, Michael Palubiak.
We are the largest business in the state and country that caters to residential customers, Palubiak said. Were trained by the Power Washers of North America. All my guys have training on how to clean all these surfaces properly, safely and efficiently. We do thousands of homes a season as a professional outfit that is well-trained in a fraction of the time it would take for you to do it yourself and at a fraction of the cost.
The business offers several services, the most popular being pressure washing of houses.
We do a double application of biodegradable cleanser, Palubiak said. That cleanser not only lifts and removes dirt, [but] it kills any living organism that can be growing on the home. We do a soft brush scrub and double fresh water rinse to rinse everything. Also, our cleanser has an additive to help protect siding from contaminants.
Cleaning a homes exterior can help prolong the life of the siding, Palubiak said, as well as improve its appearance.
Perfect Power Wash also provides low-pressure roof cleaning. Palubiak said this process can help remove gloeocapsa magma, an algae that has become more common in the Northeast Ohio region in recent years.
Its attracted to the shingle roofing that construction people use because there is limestone in the shingles, he said. This algae actually feeds on the limestone. It makes premature wear and tear and looks very unsightly.
The companys crew very gently applies an algaecide to the shingles in two applications first to kill the algae and a second to make sure its 100 percent gone, Palubiak said.
Additionally, Perfect Power Wash provides gutter scrubbing to remove black streaks, concrete cleaning and sealing as well as cleaning of wood or composite deck surfaces.
