Brinkerhoff Home Foundation could disband, president says - June 28, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Brinkerhoff Home Foundation, which has maintained the Victorian brick mansion at 1500 N. Fifth St. since the 1970s, may have done its job too well, its president says.

In a letter sent to foundation members earlier this week, the foundation board reported that Benedictine University at Springfield intends to take over control of the house, which it owns, and use the restored first floor for offices and meeting space.

The decision could mean the end of the foundation, said John Bucari, its president.

Were still trying to wrap our minds around what were going to do, he said.

But Benedictine marketing and communications manager Scott McCullar said Wednesday the university intends to use only one-third of the first floor two west parlors for offices. The school wants the home to remain available for tours, weddings and other special events.

The living room and library wont be used by Benedictine, he said. The dining room would be used as a conference room and multipurpose space, but will be kept intact and historically preserved.

Were very appreciative of the Brinkerhoff Foundation and what theyve done, McCullar said. We hope we can cooperatively work together. We certainly didnt want to see the end of the foundation.

    Campus jewel

He said he hopes people touring the home still will be able to see the two parlor rooms, too.

We want to keep it open for public view, he said. It is the jewel of the campus.

No Decision Made On Presbyterian Church Cell Tower Application - June 28, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Southampton Village residents will have to wait at least two more weeks to find out if a new cellphone tower will be allowed to be installed in the historic First Presbyterian Church of Southampton clock tower on the corner of South Main Street and Meeting House Lane in the village.

During a public hearing at a Board of Architectural Review and Historic Preservation meeting on Wednesday, representatives of MetroPCS, trustees of the church, and concerned citizens shared their opinions about the possibility of introducing the cell tower into the 169-year-old church.

ARB members said they did not have enough information to make a decision on the application and ultimately adjourned the public hearing to July 11 in order to review newly submitted material.

The application, which was submitted in May and was the second application by MetroPCS to install an array in the church tower, proposes four antennas to be installed 59 feet above ground level, inside of the tower where the clock faces are. Some of the existing wood siding around the clock faces on the exterior of the building would need to be replaced by fiberglass reinforced polymer (FRP), which would look like the existing wood but would allow cellular waves to be easily transmitted through it. An additional antenna would be mounted to the inside face of a turret at the very top of the tower. The clock mechanism would not be affected.

The existing, historic siding would be removed, wrapped and placed in crates in the churchs basement storage area.

According to Keith Brown of Brown & Altman LLP., which represents MetroPCS, the area of disturbance would be less than 1 percent of the church exterior and there would be no change in appearance at all.

A representative from Stealth Concealment Solutions, which would provide and install the FRP material, produced a sample of the new siding and said that while it would look exactly like the existing wood siding, it would weather differently and perhaps show a slight difference in color over time. He said passersby could not likely tell the difference with their naked eye.

Nonetheless, representatives of the church said the building would continue to be regularly painted and maintained as it has since it was built.

According to church trustee Gerald Adams, the upkeep and maintenance of the church has depended on church membership for financial support. He said that in the 1950s, the churchs membership was approximately 900 people, and now in 2012, it stands at about 400.

The church building is the same, but the membership is less than half of what it was, he said. The fact is, an older church requires more maintenance and more funds with less members contributing.

Plymouth Title, Falcone Roofing battle for Babe Ruth title - June 28, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Plymouth Tire and Falcone Roofing swept Cabbyshack and Cold Spring, respectively, in the best-of-three semifinal series over this past weekend to advance to this weeks championship of the Plymouth Babe Ruth Prep division to arrange a showdown for all of the marbles this week

    Plymouth Tire 15, Cabbyshack 0

Hugh Halligan was near perfect on the mound (two hits, two walks, 6 Ks), and the PT offense supplied more than ample support in Sundays series clincher.

All 11 Plymouth Tire players had at least one hit, paced by three apiece from catcher Drew Mahoney (3-for-3, three runs, RBI, double, walk, three stolen bases) and third baseman Sterling Pilkington (3-for-4, run. four RBI, stolen base).

Going 2-for-3 in the slugfest were shortstop Bobby Colbert (three runs, RBI, three stolen bases, walk), second baseman Dylan Lyons (three runs, two stolen bases, two RBI, walk), first baseman Seth Spellman (three runs, double, three RBI, three stolen bases, sac fly), centerfielder Christian Weppert (three runs, triple, three RBI, two stolen bases, walk) and Halligan (three runs, RBI, two stolen bases, walk). Jesse Gwillliam also had two big hits and three RBI, and base hits also came off the bats of Greg Jones, Curtis Sheppard and Tyler Keating.

    Plymouth Tire 17, Cabbyshack 16

It was far from an artistic success for either team, but PT outlasted a gutsy Cabbyshack performance to notch a win in the opener in the best-of-three semifinals showdown.

Cabbyshack scored a pair to knot the game at 16-16 in the top of the seventh. With two outs in the home half of the frame, Mahoney laced a single to left and stole both second and third during a long at bat from Halligan.

Halligan managed to foul off two two-strike pitches before drawing a walk on a wild pitch that allowed Mahoney to score the game-winner.

There were many errors from both sides, but Devin Bridgwater and Spellman came up with big play after big play in the field for PT, at second and first base, respectively, each of them also going 3-for-4 at the plate. Spellman scored a pair and knocked in three while Bridgwater scored three and knocked in one.

Walpole school leaders hope to find new Boyden principal over summer - June 28, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

School leaders hope a new principal will be in place at Boyden School come fall with an aggressive summer search.

Superintendent Lincoln Lynch outlined a timeline for the School Committee last Thursday to find a replacement for Mike Stanton, who is leaving Boyden to be principal of the Igo School in Foxboro.

Lynch hopes to name a new south school chief by July 27.

Hopefully we can negotiate it if we have the candidate of our choosing so the person hits the ground running, he said.

Stanton resigned from the district at the end of May and finished out the academic year with Boyden School. He promised to help his replacement transition into the new job even after his departure.

Nancy Gallivan, the newly installd chairman of the School Committee, said she was sad to see Stanton leave but understood his decision.

Weve been extremely well-served by Mike Stanton and he deserves our best wishes because hes given an awful lot and done very good things for our children, she said.

All Boyden parents are invited to a focus group on Wednesday, June 27 to talk about the qualities they want in a new principal. The meeting is set for 7 p.m. in Boyden Schools media lab.

A selection recommendation committee led by former School Committee chairman Brian Walsh will conduct interviews on July 10 and 11 to recommend one or two candidates to Lynch, who will make the final call.

With a short window during summer vacation, no site visits will be held since school is not in session. School Committee member Allan Cameron, an elementary principal in Westwood, made the suggestion.
