GOSHEN Aging veterans may not have to clean their gutters this spring.
Instead, a group of young men will perform weekly handyman services for the areas aging vets, thanks to a new partnership between Celebrate America and Teen Challenge.
Teen Challenge is a drug and alcohol recovery center that uses a comprehensive Christian approach to healing, according to its mission statement. Its Elkhart branch consists of males in their 20s. Teen Challenge students learn to cope with everyday issues while growing spiritually, emotionally, socially, educationally and physically. But now, the students are focusing on serving others.
The guys do work projects every day, said Eric Swanson, the program director of North Central Indiana Teen Challenge. Were going to incorporate Celebrate America to find veterans who need assistance.
The partner, Celebrate America, is the nonprofit organization that puts on the fireworks display at the Black Squirrel Golf Club, an annual event with an estimated 20,000 attendees. Now they are helping organize this initiative one that has a more lasting effect.
Its founder, Al Lane, has been a driving force behind the veteran service project. Lane served in World War II and has since appreciated being treated with special respect.
I realized there were elderly veterans, some of whom needed help with physical needs around the house or the yard, Lane said.
Lane added that he decided to start working with Teen Challenge after he saw the success theyve had helping young men grow into responsible young citizens.
Teen Challenge promotes a life in accordance with what the Bible teaches, and servitude is a part of it. Serving others is a method that Teen Challenge uses to transcend the selfishness of addictions.
We have a faith-based approach to recovery, said Swanson. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says if any man is in Christ he is a new creation. The old has gone and the new has come.

Residents will need to plan around a major construction project taking place on East Teton Boulevard.
The project, costing $2.57 million, started Monday and encompasses the replacement of the street surface as well as curb, gutter and sidewalk installation from Monroe Avenue to Astle Avenue. Storm drains will also be placed as part of the improvement project. The money paying for the work comes from the sixth-penny tax approved in 2012 and is part of the citys first year of sixth-penny projects.
While the project was under discussion two weeks ago at the Green River City Council meeting, public works department employee Mark Westenskow told the council that only one side of the street is scheduled to receive a sidewalk placement. However, because the city received a good bid for the work, Westenskow says enough money may be left to for sidewalk placement for the other side of the street.
If things go well, we may be able to get some sidewalk on the other side, Westenskow said.
A number of city-owned facilities are located within the projects boundaries. Access to the citys public works building, recycling center, fire department training tower, animal control facility, rodeo arena and wastewater treatment facility will be impacted during the construction work, though detours will be available.
A detour through the Veterans Park on Monroe Ave. provides access to public works, rodeo arena, recycling center and training tower while an detour near the animal control building will lead to the horse corrals, waste water treatment facility, RV dump and the citys water salesman. Additionally, work will stop during the Overland State Stampede Rodeo, which takes place June 6 and 7.
Lewis and Lewis, the contractor for the project, has six months to complete the work, however a memo from the citys public works department states the project is expected to conclude in early July.

Plan for detours: major construction begins
Dust, pedestrian access, and signage issues, and the potential of summer street work, are among the topics expected to be addressed on Wednesday in a morning meeting about the downtown Urban Renewal Project.
The community is invited to attend the meeting, at 8 a.m. at City Hall, Second and State streets.
City Public Works and representatives of the contractor, Crestline Construction, will give a project status update and listen to concerns, according to Gary Lindemyer, project inspector with public works.
The city will provide information on important dates and on the planned construction of public restrooms at Third and State streets.
Work will start soon on the restrooms, for which the city has budgeted $220,000 from the Urban Renewal budget.
The city and contractor will also discuss the possibility of continuing sidewalk work through the summer.
The way it is now, we wont finish the curb and gutters west to Sixth Street, by June 1, the contractual deadline completing the work, Lindemeyer said.
The contractor is only allowed to have minimal activity during the summer months, and we have always interpreted minimal activity to include curb and gutter and doing sidewalk work, but we want to make sure we get input from the businesses that are affected before we continue that work, Lindemyer said.
No streets would be closed, and were looking at working on a block at a time and only one side of the street at a time, during summer curb and gutter work, he said.
The alternative is to delay until after Labor Day the installation of the curbs, gutters and sidewalks from Third to Sixth.

Window Genie of Boise will service the Treasure Valley areas of Boise, Meridian, Eagle, Nampa and Caldwell.
Before joining the Window Genie team, Beller worked mostly in corporate training and development. He said the instability in working on a contract basis with various large companies grew tiring, A lot of these businesses didnt want to commit full-time to have someone do training for their staff, so work was often short term. I was just making lateral moves in my career; I wanted the opportunity to continue growing and improving both professionally and personally. I grew up working in our family business back in Salmon, Idaho selling clothing and furniture, so I knew what a small business looked like, how it operated behind the scenes and was comfortable with exploring that option as my next move.
Beller met a franchise coach in 2013 named Dick Bunge from The Entrepreneurs Source, a franchise consulting agency. Beller said of working with Bunge, He took great care in finding companies that would best suit my strengths, goals and interests. I believe in operating with integrity, honesty, and giving back when you can. Window Genie exhibits all those qualities - and then some. I also believe he presented Window Genie to me because it is a solid company, one that matched my strengths and allows a person like myself to be successful. Also, it doesn't hurt that Window Genie is in an industry that is growing and profitable. I wanted to invest in something for the long-term and that was sustainable.
Window Genie of Boise officially opens for business on March 24th. Beller says he is excited about business ownership and, really charting my own course. When it comes to this business, the decisions I make will directly affect my success and the success of my team. Im ready for that kind of responsibility and its something I missed in my previous career. Im excited to create a solid team of individuals that can take pride in their work and see it pay off. In the past, working for big companies, I was never completely sure if the work I put in was making an impact on the performance or profitability of the company I was working for. My technicians, the guys doing most of the cleaning, will know how they impact the success of Window Genie and when theyre doing a good job. At the first sign of green grass growing in pastures, farmers will be tempted to turn in livestock for grazing.
Hold back, said Rob Kallenbach, University of Missouri Extension forage specialist. Wait for grass to reach a minimum 4 inches of new growth. More is better.
After a long hard winter, I am as sick of feeding hay as anyone, Kallenbach said. But Ill try to hold back.
A delayed start on grazing becomes more important than usual this spring. Pastures will be weak and thin, he said. Give grasses a chance to gain strength.
Pastures were hurt two ways. Dry weather last fall left grasses weak going into winter. The fall of 2013 was drier than the fall of the drought year of 2012, when hurricane rains revived fall pastures.
Secondly, extreme cold killed or set back grass this year.
You think grass doesnt grow in winter. But it is alive and growing. Any new growth was frozen repeatedly.
Extreme variations in temperatures made winterkill worse. There would be 60 degrees one day. Three days later it would fall below zero again.
The plant would react to the spring-like temperaturesand then get zapped, he said. The cure for weak stands is rest and regrowth to restore depleted sugar reserves.
Grazing too early could cause need for pasture reseeding later, or the weak stands could become crowded out with weeds.
