TVA completes retaining wall at Kingston Recovery Site - March 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Kingston, TN -

The Tennessee Valley Authority has completed an earthquake-resistant, underground retaining wall around the containment cell at the recovery site of the ash spill at the Kingston Fossil Plant.

The wall completely surrounds the 240-acre containment cell where recovered ash will be permanently stored.

Construction of the wall began in summer 2011 and was finished February 20th, almost a month ahead of schedule.

It is the largest wall of its kind in the U.S. at nearly 64,000 linear feet, the equivalent of 12 miles, and is designed to withstand a magnitude 6.0 earthquake.

The project team is now focused on completing installation of the cap and cover over the reinforced containment cell. The project remains under budget and on schedule to be completed by the end of this year.

In addition, TVA is restoring and enhancing the Swan Pond area by installing several recreational features, performing shoreline stabilization, constructing wetlands and planting a variety of native plants and trees. When this work is completed in spring 2015, there will be more than 3 miles of paved walking trails, fishing piers and docks, a pedestrian bridge and boat ramp, and wildlife habitat areas for the public to enjoy.

Wall may be on verge of collapse - March 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

SAN DIEGO - A retaining wall in the Golden Hill area may be on the verge collapsing, and a local building inspector says he received no response from the city when he notified them of the problem.

Resident Jessica McGrevin walks past the wall on C and 28th streets twice a day. She told 10News, "It kind of looks like it's just going to fall off. It's a little intimidating to walk by."

It was hard to capture with a camera exactly how much the wall is leaning, but it was enough to catch the attention of building inspector Erhard Gajewski as he drove by.

Gajewski said, "There's potential for this wall to come down."

Gajewski told 10News there's no way to tell when the wall could collapse, but he didn't even want to stand next to it while he talked to reporter Itica Milanes.

"I don't want to be too close to it. Well, who knows when it's going to go," he added.

Gajewski said he called the city of San Diego's Code Enforcement to put it on their radar, but he hasn't heard back from anyone.

10News called and spoke with a Code Enforcement officer, who said he came out and took pictures of the wall Wednesday. The officer described the wall as very alarming and scary but doesn't think it's going to collapse right away. He did promise to have an engineer come check it out.

The Code Enforcement officer said he'll contact the property owner and send them a notice to have the wall repaired immediately.

Shea Concrete Products Takes Home Hardware at the 2014 Precast Show - March 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Houston, TX (PRWEB) March 05, 2014

New Englands Shea Concrete Products made a splash in the Lone Star State with a very successful showing at the 2014 Precast Show. The National Precast Concrete Association (NPCA) named it winner of the Sustainability Award and also awarded it third place for Above Ground Precast in the Creative Use of Precast category.

We are very excited to win the Sustainability Award, said Manager Greg Stratis. Shea is very conscious of the environment and has incorporated other methods to be sustainable. They include recycling water from wash out and coring and recycling cardboard & paper, and installing high-efficiency lighting fixtures for the production plant.

The installation of a $1.4 million solar panel system for its Amesbury, MA production plant gives Shea the ability to operate under environmentally-friendly conditions, as solar panels are free of emitting harmful greenhouse gases. Beaumont Solar Company designed, engineered, and installed the solar panels that went live in August 2013.

These panels, which are American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA)-compliant, harvest an output that is on average 7% better than other panels annually and 20% more productive over the 25-year life of the system," said Beaumont Solar President and CEO Phil Cavallo.

The panels are a topic of conversation with other precasters, vendors and the local area. So many people are curious and amazed that we can run net-zero. It makes you feel proud, said Stratis.

Shea showcased its diverse concrete products in its Above Ground Precast honor. A Newport, RI seawall project alongside Ocean Avenue required specially-designed retaining wall blocks that Shea manufactured. The project focused on replacing a 300-foot failing retaining wall that was originally built in the 1930s. Of the 14 design proposals, Sheas team of Mello Construction Company, Contech Engineered Solutions, and Gary K. Munkelt & Associates separated itself as the only one to offer a complete seawall replacement.

The project was funded by the Federal Highway Administration and the Rhode Island Department of Transportation served as the liaison. This meant Sheas team of designers, engineers, and producers needed to follow all standards at the state and federal levels. The Ocean Avenue project was completed just in time for Tropical Storm Irene in August 2011 and Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

Shea Concrete Products is capable of manufacturing a large variety of products to meet all kinds of project specifications, Stratis said. Also, if there is an application to use or substitute precast and we currently do not make that product, then we are very open minded.

Shea manufactured the ReCon wet-cast modular retaining wall blocks that were specially-designed to withstand exposure to saltwater and provide a service life of about 75 years. Block dimensions run 48 long by 16 high and 60 in depth. The top block weighs a hefty 5,800 pounds to preserve the walls top against powerful waves.
