Roofing brings down OC sales - June 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Published: Saturday, 6/21/2014 - Updated: 2 days ago

BY TYREL LINKHORN BLADE BUSINESS WRITER

Shares of Owens Corning slipped 6 percent Friday after the Toledo-based company cautioned earnings are likely to be lower than expected this year because the companys roofing business continues to be weak.

Officials had been holding out hope that the firm could still meet its target of $500 million in adjusted earnings before interest and taxes this year, even after a disappointing first quarter for roofing. While net sales of composites and insulation were up modestly, sales of roofing materials plummeted 18 percent.

However, on Friday the company said that business hasnt recovered as quickly as officials thought it might, with weakness continuing through April and May. OC said volumes may be down by as much as 20 percent in the years first half compared to last year.

In a news release, OC said it expects to recover a portion of that shortfall in the second half of the year, however, continued weakness in the second quarter has introduced further uncertainty in the full-year financial outlook for the companys roofing business.

Matt Schroder, a spokesman for the company, declined to comment further.

The factors that play into that, as they relate to our company and our point of view on the industry, is commentary and color we will provide during our July 23 conference call, he wrote in an email to The Blade.

Stephanie Karol, an economist at IHS Global Insight, said the market for single-family homes has not been performing as well as many people had predicted. Building permits for single-family homes have been mostly level since October, she said.

The winter certainly didnt help, but it gave a lot of people a really handy scapegoat for whats really going on and whats really going on is an affordability problem, Ms. Karol said.

Owens Corning Lowers 2014 Outlook on Weak Roofing Business – Analyst Blog - June 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Global producer of glass fiber reinforcements Owens Corning ( OC ) has lowered 2014 outlook due to soft volumes in the roofing business.

Owens estimates that roofing volumes for the first half of 2014 will be 20% lower than the year-ago level. The Ohio-based company expects that adjusted EBIT for the second quarter will be lower than $500 million announced during the first-quarter conference call. However, it will be higher than the year-ago level of $416 million.

The company experienced weakness in roofing volumes during the first quarter of 2014, which continued in April and May. Continued weakness in roofing volume has left the company brooding over the full-year financial outlook for the roofing business. In fact, we do not expect the weakness in volumes to revive in the upcoming second quarter, which is scheduled to be reported on Jul 23. However, Owens expects to recover a portion of this volume shortfall in the second half of the year through its insulation and composites businesses.

    First Quarter Results

In April, Owens reported first-quarter earnings of 29 cents, flat year over year as improvement in insulation and composites businesses was offset by weak roofing volumes. Earnings lagged the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 35 cents by 17.1%.

Net sales of $1.27 billion missed the year-ago results as well as the Zacks Consensus Estimate due to weak roofing volumes.

    Other Stocks to Consider

Owens Corning carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Other stocks in the building and construction sector include United Rentals, Inc. ( URI ), The New Home Company LLC ( NWHM ) and Gibraltar Industries, Inc. ( ROCK ). All these stocks sport a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).

Salem Red Sox Game Notes - June 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

June 23, 2014 - Carolina League (CarL) Salem Red Sox The Salem Red Sox and Potomac Nationals play game two of a three game set tonight at Pfitzner Stadium. First Pitch is at 7:05.

Have Their Number: The Potomac Nationals seem to have Salem's number of late. The Nationals have won five consecutive games against the Sox, all at Pfitzner Stadium. The P-Nats have outscored the Sox 41-24 in five games. Salem's staff ERA has inflated to 6.64 (31 ER/42.0 IP). The Nationals five wins have included two walk-off wins, three one run victories, and two innings of six plus runs. On the season, Salem took three of four at LewisGale Field earlier this year, to give the Sox a 3-6 record against the First-Half North Division Champs.

Carson Cruising: It's seems like it's made mention of every day, but somehow Sox catcher Carson Blair seems to get hotter everyday. With two hits in three at-bats yesterday, Blair continued to raise his batting average, extending the steady climb its made over the past month. After beginning the season with just 12 hits in his first 88 at- bats, Blair has been as good as can be in his last 17 games, bat- ting .459 (28-for-61) since May 16. During this stretch, he's pounded 12 extra-base hits and driven in 19 runs, while raising his season average from .136 to .268. Blair's OBP has also risen to .395, aided by the fact that he's walked 32 times in 42 games.

All-Star on the Bump: Through the first four games of the second half, the Sox starters have struggled. Salem starting pitchers have surrendered 22 runs in just 18 innings pitched in the second half, amassing a 11.00 ERA. But Salem will try to turn around that trend with its All-Star righty Justin Haley on the bump tonight. Haley fin- ished the first half with the second best ERA in the Carolina League at 2.05. Haley has split time between the bullpen and in the rotation. Justin's numbers have been even better when he starts. Haley is 3-1 with a 1.50 ERA in five starts this season. Opposing hitters have only managed a .229 average against Haley this year.

A Good First Impression: Jantzen Witte has certainly made his pres- ence known in his first four games in the Carolina League. His .267 average may not blow you off the charts, but Witte has a hit in three of his first four games. And in his lone game without a hit, Witte picked up an RBI on a fielders choice. Witte has five RBIs in four games, including a three run triple on Saturday night in Winston- Salem.

Some Major (League) Additions: Major leaguers Bryce Harper and Wilson Ramos will both make rehab appearances for the Nationals tonight. It's the second time this season that the Red Sox will face a P-Nats team with a major league rehabber. Ryan Zimmerman played four games against the Sox earlier this season. Zimmerman picked up five hits in 14 at bats, with a double and three RBIs. Harper is making his second career stint with the P-Nats. Harper played two rehab games a season ago, picking up two hits in four at-bats. Ra- mos is also making his second appearance in Potomac, after rehab- bing in Woodbridge for three games a season ago. Ramos went with- out a hit in 10 at-bats last year.

OK Google, crank the A/C: Nest announces new smart home API - June 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Nest thermostat will soon be able to communicate with other smart devices in your home.

    Jacqui Cheng

Google officially closed a deal to buy Nest Labs for $3.2 billion back in February of 2014. Since then, both companies have been mostly quiet about their plans other than to respond to questions about privacy mattersand butt into the related business of home security bybuying Dropcam for $555 million. Today, in advance of Google I/O, Nest has officially announced a new developer program and API that will allow other companies' smart devices to communicate with Nest's Protect smoke alarm and Learning Thermostat.

Among the companies that Nest is partnering with for this initial publicity push are IFTTT, Jawbone, LIFX, Logitech, Mercedes-Benz, Whirlpool, Chamberlain, and Google itselfthe latter two companies will release Nest-compatible features this fall, while the others are all available today.

All of the companies' "Works with Nest experiences" focus on making Nest devices more useful when used together with other smart home gadgetsif the Nest Protect smoke alarm goes off, than LIFX's lights can flash red to make it more obvious to the hearing impaired. AChamberlain garage door opener can tell the Nest thermostat to enter and leave Away mode depending on whether the owner isentering or leaving thegarage. And Google Now will let users control their thermostats with their voices and set proximity-based rules that will adjust theirthermostats before theyget home.

"It's not just integration for integration's sake, or connectivity just to connect," Matt Rogers, Nest co-founder and engineering head, told Ars. "It's 'what are great user benefits we could do?' Those are the kinds of things we're going to highlight. That said, it's a developer program that's opened up very widely. So whoever wants to build stuff can build stuff."

Early Nest investors Google Ventures and Kleiner Perkins Caulfield and Byers are both partnering with Nest to fund startupsthat want to get their own Nest-related projects off the ground. For now, though,Nestisfocused on partnerships withestablished companies.

Nest's tools are entirely Web-based, and there is no cost to developers who want to begin developing for Nest.

While the developer program's goal of connecting Nest gadgets to other devices sounds pretty Google-y, Rogers told us that Nest had been working on the developer program "behind the scenes for about a year," well before the Google acquisition happened. Nest is taking advantage of Google I/O and of Google's sheer size to amplify the announcement and attract more interest, but at least, as of this writing, the program is being driven by Nest's team and not by its parent company.

"Before Google, we would have to build our own event, and having an event like I/O is a really big deal," Rogers said. "Tens of thousands of people come to these kinds of things, so this is a really good platform for us to work on."

Developer signs deal to build office buildings near Pittsburgh International Airport - June 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Office buildings are going up faster than airplanes in the Pittsburgh International Airport corridor these days.

The latest is a 16.2-acre, one- or two-building flex office development on Industry Drive in Findlay being planned by Oxford Development Company.

Allegheny County Airport Authority board members approved a 50-year lease agreement with the Downtown developer Friday to build on land adjacent to the Thermo Fisher Scientific building.

Oxford is considering two options for the property either one large 95,000-square-foot class A flex office building or two smaller ones, said Shawn Fox, director of business development.

Either way, it plans to start construction by the end of the year and have the space ready for a tenant by next summer, he said.

If two are built, the first would total about 50,000 square feet. A second building, about 45,000 square feet, would be erected after Oxford finds tenants for the first. It would be built within 30 months.

Oxford initially planned for two buildings, but is holding open the option for a single larger one because there are several potential big users in the market that might be interested in such a facility, Mr. Fox said.

It plans to build on speculation, meaning without a signed tenant. Mr. Fox said Oxford is comfortable doing so because of the strength of the market and the demand for office space.

Theres a lot of growth in the Parkway West market past the [Interstate] 79 interchange, and theres been a movement to this class A flex office space because its a little bit cheaper of a price point, because of the efficiency factor for tenants, he said.

Oxford will pay $95,000 in the first year to lease the land, with the amount increasing over the course of the 50-year agreement.
