IT'S a wall more than 100 years in the making.
A massive new retaining wall between the Ipswich Bowls Club's top and bottom greens has been installed with the help of the Ipswich City Council.
The wall, landscaping and installation of new seating along the edge of the main green cost more than $400,000, but was vital for the safety of the club, according to club chairman Darryl Knight.
Mr Knight said once the hill began to shift towards the lower green it had to be replaced.
"We used to whipper snip the whole thing," he said.
"It used to be a very steep grass hill and keeping it maintained was dangerous enough.
"We'd been on to the council about replacing it, but when it started to move they came straight in and helped us out.
"We couldn't be more appreciative to them for their help."
Parks, Sport and Recreation Committee chairman David Morrison said investment was vital to maintaining the historic Queens Park club.
"This is part of our program of refurbishing Ipswich parks for the enjoyment of residents," Cr Morrison said.

A stones throw from the Eiffel Tower and Pariss famed Alexandre III bridge, Russias Vladimir Putin is putting his mark on the French capital.
Construction of a new Russian Orthodox church with five golden domes in central Paris gets under way in the next few weeks, with U.S. and European efforts to slam Putins Russia for its incursions into Ukraine doing little to halt its progress. The yet-to-be-named church is being built on a plot of land sold in 2010 to Russia by the French state for 73 million euros ($99 million). The deal was sealed by Former President Nicolas Sarkozy. His successor Francois Hollandes government says its determined to see the monument erected.
While less controversial than Frances decision to go ahead with the sale of two warships to the former Cold War foe at the risk of displeasing the U.S. and other allies, the churchs construction is yet another indication of Frances complicated relationship with Russia. France, which is struggling to rebound from two years with barely any growth and record joblessness, needs business from Russia. Frances exports to Russia have risen fourfold since 2000 to 7 billion euros last year.
The deal is done, Russia is the owner of that land, Eric Woerth, who was Sarkozys budget minister and signed the deal in March 2010, said in a telephone interview. Its not in Frances interest to mess up things with Russia; nor with the U.S., for that matter. Yes, its a fine line.
Former Budget Minister Eric Woerth said, The deal is done, Russia is the owner of that land. Close

As the crisis in Ukraine escalated -- resulting in Russias annexation of Crimea -- the French lowered the profile of the project that will raise Russian Orthodox crosses as high as 117 feet in the Paris sky. A spring ceremony to lay the first stone in the presence of Putin was quietly canceled, an official in Hollandes office said.
France has annoyed the U.S. and other allies by deciding not to suspend the delivery of the two helicopter-carrier Mistral warships to the Russian Navy, whose members arrive on Frances Atlantic shores this month for their first training.

HOUMA, La. (AP) After a 2010 fire destroyed their church, parishioners of St. Matthew's Episcopal in Houma look forward to returning to their former location in the coming weeks.
The Rev. Craig Dalferes, rector at St. Matthew's, tells The Courier (http://bit.ly/UFnf4r) the new school building and parish hall will be completed by the start of the start of the school year in August.
Dalferes also estimated the church will be completed around December as the building's interior will need additional work.
The fire began in the church and spread to one wing of the school, which burned through the roof, causing the building's collapse.
St. Matthew's, which was listed on the National Registry of Historical Places, was Terrebonne's second oldest church.

Construction on St. Matthew's nears completion

After a 2010 fire destroyed their church, parishioners of St. Matthews Episcopal in Houma look forward to returning to their former location in the coming weeks.
The Rev. Craig Dalferes, rector at St. Matthews, said the new school building and parish hall will be completed by the start of the start of the school year in August.
Dalferes also estimated the church, on Barrow Street near Main Street, will be completed around December as the buildings interior will need additional work.
Once we receive the permit to occupy the school and parish hall, we will likely begin having our worship service in the parish hall until the church is complete, he said. Although no injuries were reported, the fire, which took hours to extinguish, destroyed the building during the early morning hours of Nov. 11, 2010.
The fire began in the church and spread to one wing of the school, which burned through the roof, causing the buildings collapse.
Demolition of the church building, a Houma landmark, began on Dec. 22, 2010.
Grace Lutheran Church in Houma then offered its church building to the St. Matthews congregation for its Sunday services.
We have enjoyed wonderful hospitality from Grace Lutheran Church these past three-and-a-half years, Dalferes said. Our departure in a few weeks will be bittersweet as weve come to enjoy one another very much and have made some wonderful new friends.
The congregation holds its service at 11 a.m., but once back at St. Matthews, Dalferes said the service will shift to 9 a.m.

Your Theatre will spearhead preservation efforts at First Baptist Church in exchange for shared space in the historic downtown building.John Sladewski/Standard-Times file
NEW BEDFORD The long battle to save First Baptist Church may have finally found daylight.
Your Theatre, the city's longstanding community playhouse, and First Baptist will enter a partnership that allows the theater troupe to use church space while it helps the tiny congregation preserve the historic building.
The 65-year-old theater group has been looking for a new space and the church was looking for a way to spearhead its restoration, according to Gil Cardona-Erazo, who serves on the Your Theatre facilities committee. The city brought the two together, he said, and the Waterfront Historic Area LeaguE (WHALE) helped coordinate the partnership.
"If this were a romance, the mayor's office is the matchmaker and WHALE is the wedding planner," Cardona-Erazo said.
Your Theatre currently occupies space at St. Martin's Episcopal Church in the South End and was previously located in the onetime Southeastern Massachusetts Technical Institute building that is now the Quest Center. It has been looking for a way to locate in downtown New Bedford.
First Baptist, located on William Street across from City Hall, has received several state grants to preserve its 1829 white-clapboard building but it has struggled to raise the necessary matching funds.
After the steeple began to degrade in the weather, endangering pedestrians on the sidewalk, the city of New Bedford placed a mechanical lien on the property giving it an interest in the building as the congregation seeks to preserve it. The white-spired structure is featured on the city seal, some of its members were active in the abolitionist movement and it was the inspiration for Henry Martyn Robert's development of "Robert's Rules of Order" after an unruly church meeting.
Cardona-Erazo called the theater's move an opportunity "to help the folks at First Baptist be good stewards of their building." He said it will be a rather long process before the partnership begins, and didn't have an exact timeline Tuesday.

'Drag Your Nag' event successful -
June 16, 2014 by

Sundays Drag Your Nag event drew six teams and more than 100 spectators to Chautauqua Park.
This was the first year for the race, hosted by the Beatrice Area Chamber of Commerce and sponsored by Michaels Appliance Repair. The event required one participant to carry his or her partner through the course. The carried teammate was required to protect a raw egg for the duration of the race.
Lora Young, executive director of the Beatrice Area Chamber of Commerce, said the idea for the Drag Your Nag event was adopted from Europe.
Ive seen these courses done before, she said. Ive done some research. Haul Your Partner is really, really popular in Europe. They have huge, major championships doing this. I just did a lot of Internet research.
Obstacles included a wheelbarrow, tire run, rope course, hula hoop, archery shoot, slalom and mud pit. For all six teams, the mud pit, the courses final obstacle, provided the biggest challenge.
It was challenging because the dirt on the side was really soft, Matthew Arnt said. Matthew and teammate Holly Arnt won this years competition with a time of 1:29. When you stepped into it, you just kind of fell in. Getting off of it into the water was, of course, sloppy and soupy. Getting out of it was tiring. Thats where I actually fell. It doesnt seem too deep, but once you get up carrying extra weight like that, its challenging.
For Holly, the most challenging element of the race was being pushed in a wheelbarrow.
The wheelbarrow was the scariest, because it really didnt feel balanced, she explained. Just holding on was hard; making sure I didnt break the egg.
Young called the inaugural Drag Your Nag event a success.
Im really happy with six teams, she said. The teams had a wonderful time. They all said they wanted to do it again next year, and theyll help recruit more contestants. They had a blast. It was a lot of fun.
