They're supposed to protect you, but authorities say some home security companies are selling nothing but lies. The state attorney general is among a growing number of agencies going after scrupulous companies.
Several of the larger alarm system companies have also banned together at ESX Nashville, a three-day home security conference to try and stop the issue of deception sales practices.
It's a sales practice that has given the multi-billion-dollar home security alarm industry a bad name.
Companies like Vision Security, where a representative was seen on a whistle blower video training salesmen how to reel unsuspecting customers hook, line and sinker.
"It's not only sick, it's shocking to see that type of behavior and see that somebody is going to knock on a door and say that they're with ADT or ADT is going out of business or otherwise scam a customer," said ADT representative David Bleisch.
The problem is nationwide and has also hit the Midstate.
For the past six months, some folk in north Murfreesboro have been tricked by salesmen from AMP Security into changing or upgrading their alarm systems. So far, eight customers have fallen victim.
"Targeting people that have security signs in their yards, coming knocking on doors at 8 o'clock or 9 o'clock at night and won't take no for an answer," said Tom Davis, media chairman for the North Murfreesboro Alliance.
At the largest gathering of home security alarm companies and vendors in the country, the ESX Conference in Nashville, the state Attorney General's Office is raising awareness about deceptive sales practices.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas -
Some people living in the Remington Ranch subdivision in north Harris County say they are fed up with criminals targeting their homes.
One resident showed KPRC Local 2 security camera video of two men who broke into his home and ransacked his belongings.
"They stole two TVs, one in my living room a 60-inch LCD, plus another 46-inch in my bedroom as well as computers and other things of that natures," says a man who identified himself as Hadji.
Hadji says he forgot to set the alarm when he left home for work on Wednesday.
Just after noon, the men kicked in the front door of his home. It took them less than two minutes to haul away his personal possessions. He believes an accomplice was waiting outside in a getaway vehicle.
"The first time I'm a victim," said Hadji. "It's not a good feeling."
Two days after his house was burglarized crooks broke into another home on his street.
The Harris County Sheriff's Office routinely patrols the neighborhood and officers are keeping an eye out for anyone who looks suspicious.
Hadji says he has lived in the neighborhood for several years. He describes it as a nice area and has no plans to move.

With a deal in the works for one business to go into the Erie Street Market and a national grocery considering opening a store there, Toledo City Council is being asked to spend up to $150,000 to fix the buildings leaky roof and repair the geo-thermal heating and cooling system.
A proposal to take money out of the budget for capital improvement projects to make roof repairs and replace pumps and equipment in the heating and cooling system was discussed Tuesday at councils agenda-review meeting.
Bill Burkett, commissioner of economic development, told council members that consultants who have inspected the city-owned building estimate the roof repairs could cost as much as $70,000 and work to replace pumps used in the geo-thermal system will be at least $32,000.
Two of the four pumps that move ground water into the system must be replaced, he said.
Also, eight of the 10 handling units that circulate heated and cooled air throughout the building, including the Libbey Glass Factory Outlet store, must be replaced, and the cost for that work will be about $60,00, Mr. Burkett said.
After contractors inspect the roof and mechanical system, the city would issue a request for proposals for the work and advertise for bids.
Legislation that would allow Mayor D. Michael Collins to enter into a lease agreement with a produce grower to operate a controlled-environment greenhouse in two of three empty bays at the Erie Street Market also was forwarded to the agenda for the July 1 council meeting.
Jim Bloom, who owns Sustainable Local Foods and operates a greenhouse on Hill Avenue, uses LED lighting to induce photosynthesis to grow lettuce and vegetables year round without natural sunlight. The plants are grown in white trays that receive a constant stream of water and nutrients.

DIXON Work on the downtown streetscape project has entered its sixth week.
Peoria Avenue, between First and Third streets, will be closed as construction crews work on finishing curb and gutter work, sidewalks, driveways, light pole bases and water service installations, among other elements, according to the engineering firms.

First Street, from Hennepin to Galena avenues, will remain closed. Crews are expected to do sidewalk and brick work, with pavement installation beginning mid-week.
The south side eastbound lanes ofFirst Street, between Ottawa and Crawford avenues, will be closed for water main installation. The construction company will work with KSB Hospital to have access to the Commerce Towers parking lot at all times.
Ottawa Avenue, from Second to First streets, will be closed for continued work on a retaining wall.
Additional temporary road closure may be needed, according to the engineering firms.

SANDOWN Surplus money from the current district budget will be used to remove the sidewalk and repave the driveway at Sandown North Elementary School.
The Timberlane Regional School Board approved using $85,000 in surplus funds for the work, which will address safety concerns at the school.
Probably the most slip and falls of any of our schools have been up at Sandown North, said district facilities manager Jim Hughes.
The granite curbing for the sidewalk has deteriorated over the years, creating a tripping hazard for those at the school, according to Hughes.
The work will consist of tearing up the sidewalk as well as repaving the school driveway and parking lot. The sidewalk will then be even with the driveway and delineated with paint, rather than a curb, according to Hughes.
School Board Chair Nancy Steenson said the safety issue with the sidewalk has been a recurring theme during her four years on the boards safety committee. She said every year has seen insurance claims from people tripping and falling in front of the school.
Its not a potential safety hazard, it is and has been a real safety hazard, said Steenson.
Although the planned work extends beyond the pavement near the sidewalk, Hughes said the driveway has been in poor shape for years and it makes sense to do the entire project at once.
School Board member Donna Green asked if it would be possible to price the sidewalk work separately from the entire paving project.
Its not worth it, Hughes said. Youll already have the equipment mobilized there. Its better to do it right the first time.
