Youngsville homeowners urge home repairs - October 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

23 hours 46 minutes ago by Valerie Ponseti

In Lafayette Parish, neighbors in a Youngsville subdivision with plumbing, sheetrock, and mold issues said it's time for a solution. The subdivision, that's less than 2-years-old, was built through the national building company, D.R. Horton, along with local developers, contractors and builders.

Homeowners said they aren't looking to place the blame, just to have their homes fixed. Homeowner Tara Proffitt said her problems started just a week after her family moved into their brand new home back in February.

"Came through the attic and through the light fixtures and through the air conditioning vents and it was pouring onto the floor in the laundry room," said Proffitt.

Two weeks later, there was a second leak.

"My daughter woke me up at 11 o'clock and said, 'It's raining in my bedroom'. That's when we discovered the second leak," said Proffitt.

Proffitt said she's not the only one in the Sugar Ridge Subdivision having issues, many neighbors even replacing winders because of leaks and mold inside the walls.

"There's multiple homes in this half-block radius that have experienced the same issues.

Youngsville Mayor, Wilson Viator, said all the homes have met the city codes, but he said if the builders and homeowners can't work out a solution on their own, they should take legal steps to resolve it.

"Some of them are building to a bare minimum of standards in national building codes, but it is to code. They need to seek legal action," said Viator.

Issues with sewer system delay Plumsted redevelopment plan - October 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    By ANDREW MARTINS

    Staff Writer

PLUMSTED An amendment to the New Egypt Redevelopment Plan that was recently approved by the Township Committee seeks to ensure that homes will be built on a specific parcel even if a major element of the redevelopment plan never comes to fruition.

Officials approved the plan on Oct. 1, allowing for the potential construction of about 100 homes on a 150-acre tract on Province Line Road.

According to Plumsted Land Use Board and Plumsted Municipal Utilities Authority Chairman Walt Bronson, the construction of those homes would hinge on whether the sewer system proposed in the redevelopment plan receives state approvals.

This is really to put Plan B into effect so we can keep Plan A on the table, Bronson said.

Since 2005, municipal officials have been trying to have what has been referred to as an age-targeted and empty-nester development built on the 150-acre tract on Province Line Road.

At that time, downtown New Egypt and the property on Province Line Road were designated as redevelopment areas.

Since then, there have been several attempts to get the development plan underway with builders, but those attempts have not panned out.

Officials have said that by allowing the construction of homes, they are trying to add to Plumsteds tax base without adding children to local schools.

CAUGHT ON CAMERA: Man Steals From People's Porches - October 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -

People who live in a Tower District neighborhood in Fresno say surveillance cameras caught a thief in the act. None of the people who live in the neighborhood know who the man caught on camera is.

However, they did see him around their homes and cars in the middle of the night.

"I felt violated and it really made me mad because how dare he come up on my property," says Annie Goodman whose surveillance cameras caught the bad guy in the act.

Annie Goodman says she didn't realize right away that the man took something from her porch.

"I took a neighbor to a doctor's appointment and there was something sitting on my corner and I said, "Oh my gosh that looks familiar," adds Goodman, "When I came back home I picked it up and it turned out it was the knee pads that I use for gardening."

When Goodman checked her surveillance video she saw a man on her porch in the middle of the night. The cameras caught the man walk away with a handful of things from Goodman's porch, including her knee pads that he dropped in the middle of the street.

"How dare people come up on your porch and take your things. They're shopping for items on your porches," says Goodman.

Goodman says she wants to stop crime in her neighborhood, so she started a phone tree and posts on Facebook. The neighborhood also has personal surveillance cameras everywhere, so they can catch criminals in the act.

"It really helps bringing the neighbor together; it puts the neighbor back in neighborhood," says Goodman.

South Shores Church proposes expansion - October 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    South Shores Church proposes expansion

This rendering shows South Shores Churchs reduced project alternative, which would result in reduced construction and smaller buildings compared to the original proposal.

, COURTESY OF MATLOCK ASSOCIATES INC.

No decisions were made, but close to 200 people came to the Planning Commissions meeting to hear about a proposed expansion of South Shores Church.

The church and its members are pushing to renovate buildings they say are outdated and lack amenities. Vocal residents against the project are worried about a long 10-year construction process, potential land erosion and ruined vistas.

At least three-fourths of the audience at the standing-room-only Dana Point Community Center gym Oct. 13 were church supporters, decked out in lime-green shirts with the words Time to BUILD. Residents from Voices of Monarch Beach, a group against the project, were also present.

The proposed five-phase, 10-year renovation includes demolishing three buildings and building four new ones, along with a partially underground parking structure.

Many of the buildings on the property lack heating, cooling and technology, pastor Rob DeKlotz said at the meeting. The church moved from Laguna Beach to its current site on Crown Valley Parkway in 1962.

The existing preschool, administration/fellowship hall, chapel and parking lot would be demolished, a total of 23,467 square feet of building space. Two new Christian education buildings, a community life center and a preschool/administration building would be constructed, comprising 70,284 square feet of new space. The existing sanctuary building would remain the same.

Construction would not be continuous over the 10 years.

Gods Love Lutheran in Newtown working to transform the CAN into medical clinic - October 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

NEWTOWN - At first glance, the 40-foot red shipping container in the parking lot of the Lutheran Church of Gods Love appears out of place and unsightly in the pretty community that surrounds it, but the congregation has plans to turn it into something beautiful.

Dubbed the CAN, it will soon be a construction site, bustling with church and community volunteers who will be transforming the recycled container into a functional medical clinic. When the work is completed, the clinic will then be shipped to Africa and installed near Kisumu, Kenya where it will immediately bring sustainable aid to a community that desperately needs it.

The Gods Love CAN team is working with the support of Homes of Living Hope (HoLH) on the framework needed to complete the project. Leveraging HoLHs experience and using its successful container transformations as a model, the CAN team is seeking to connect as many local volunteers and resources as possible to bring its plans to fruition.

Part of our mission is to foster a sense of community and a spirit of service, said team member Jon Hangeland. Connections are vitally important, not only between Newtown and Kisumu, but within our local community as well. We invite all to participate in this project.

The CAN project is already generating excitement among other local churches and organizations, and has received donations from a local hospital, doctor and construction company, with more on the way.

To connect with Kisumu, the church is partnering with Life in Abundance International (LIA), a faith-based organization working throughout Africa and the Caribbean to transform impoverished communities. LIA already has a team on the ground in Kisumu preparing, training and equipping the community to receive and sustain the future clinic. LIA will also work with Gods Love to ensure the facility meets the specific needs of the community it will serve.

During her October 19 visit to Gods Love, just two days after the container arrived, LIAs founding president and CEO Dr. Florence Muindi inspired the congregation to act.

I have seen firsthand the transformation these containers bring to a community in need, she said. The people of Kisumu are already waiting and praying for this clinic. When I see these container doors open here in Newtown, I also see the precious hope and joy that will be on the faces of the people in Kisumu when they open the doors of their new clinic.

And that is a beautiful thing indeed.
