In recent years, bars have begun adding patios to attract diners to eat and drink outdoors to take full advantage of the mid-Michigan spring, summer and fall. But as the mercury drops, patio dining becomes less desirable.
Dont let the cold weather keep you at home this fall. A handful of bars in town with fireplaces will keep guests warmer than their blankets will.
As the Renos North construction continues at 16460 Old U.S. 27 in Dewitt Township, owner Jessie Stiptack said she chose to add gasburning fireplaces to the atmosphere because she has the extra room and its something shes always wanted to do.
We have a really nice four seasons room and it has really tall ceilings, Stiptack said. We wanted to make sure people stay nice and cozy. As soon as the renovations are complete, Renos North will have a two-way glass fireplace, allowing customers seated outside to feel the heat from the inside. In addition, the bear will also have a fire pit in the outdoor seating area for fall and spring weather.
Stiptack said fireplaces are becoming a trend in restaurants, especially in states with long winters, like Michigan.
It makes it cozy, Stiptack said. (A fireplace setting) a nice place to have a meal and a couple cocktails.
Downtown bar/restaurants Troppo, 111 E. Michigan Ave., and Tavern on the Square, 206 Washington Square, also had fireplaces built in when they were constructed. Claddagh Irish Pub, 2900 Towne Centre Boulevard, has two gas-burning fireplaces and one just for show. Manager Craig Larsen said the fireplaces were installed when the restaurant was built.
Its traditional to have a fireplace in an Irish pub, he said.
Pizza lovers can also thaw out by the fire at Pizza House, 4790 S. Hagadorn Road in East Lansing. Manager Jeremy Bates said the restaurant has two gas-burning fireplaces for warmth and aesthetics. One was built with the restaurant and the other was installed five years ago during the restaurant expansion.
Fireside Grill, 6951 Lansing Road in Dimondale, opened last year. Its split into two sections: a sports bar area and a quiet dining area. Owner Ed Hall said the gas-burning fireplace came with the building when he bought it last year. He chose to keep it around, not just because it keeps the dining area warm, but because it adds a calm, soothing effect to the atmosphere. It also helped him pick out the bars name; Hall and his workers were sitting in one of the booths by the fireplace shortly after he started . One of them looked over at the fireplace and suggested naming the restaurant after it.

Wash to live! -

Every year 3.1 million children do not reach the age of five across the globe. It is a massive human tragedy that can be solved with a very simple intervention.
And that intervention is Soap! Who would have thought that soap can actually prevent deaths? Illnesses and deaths among new born children are caused by germs due to the fact that proper sanitation methods are not followed. Mothers washing their hands properly prevents the risk of infections amongst new borns. Only when you wash your hands with soap can you properly destroy the germs.
Marking Global Handwashing Day, the Ministry of Health and the Unilever Sri Lanka launched a ground breaking Neonatal health program, a behavior change program to encourage hand washing in the estate sector of the country. This behavioral change program is designed to reduce neonatal morbidity within vulnerable communities by encouraging mothers to adopt the habit of washing hands as a simple, effective, and affordable practice to prevent the risk of infections amongst newborns.
Solution
First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa, ceremoniously launched the program in the Eladuwa Estate in Dogangoda, Mathugama. This program aims to reach millions of Sri Lankan mothers, carrying the message of hand washing within the estate sector, to reduce the risk of newborns contracting preventable infections such as pneumonia and diarrhoea.
"Every year 3.1 million children do not reach the age of five across the globe. It is a massive human tragedy which can be solved with a very simple intervention. And that simple intervention is essentially keeping infections away with the simple act of washing hands with soap, two to three times a day at critical contact points.
That is the message that we at Unilever are committed to spreading. It is a very simple message, but it is a bold goal of reaching 1 billion people across the globe with this message of hand washing.
At Unilever Sri Lanka we have taken upon ourselves the mission of reaching eight million people by 2015.
With the partnership of the ministry, we announce the launch of the Neo natal program, whereby we would enable and work together with the government to enable children to reach the age of five across the globe and in Sri Lanka. This makes it a very historic day for us," said Siddharth Bannerjee, Country Marketing Director Unilever

How to restore Fireslate countertops -

Question: I have a problem with my Fireslate kitchen counter. Fireslate is no longer promoted for counters, as far as I know, because it doesnt hold up well and needs periodic refinishing. I have let mine get pretty bad and would like to have it redone. I would also love to know the best way to maintain it while still being able to use it normally I dont want to have to baby it.
Alexandria
Answer: Fireslate still has a Web site (www.fireslate.com) that promotes using the material for kitchen countertops, but no one responded to the phone number or e-mail address listed there.
Online comments from homeowners who have Fireslate countertops indicate that many people have had experiences similar to yours. Fireslate, which resembles slate, is made from Portland cement, silica sand, water and fillers. The Web site warns that after about five years you will need to reapply a sealer and that you can damage the surface by spilling acids such as lemon juice or vinegar, using the surface as a cutting board, or scraping it with a rough cast-iron pot. It also says you can spot-treat scratches by sanding them out, though that also wears away the sealer and makes it less effective there.
But you probably know that. So now what? When the overall surface gets heavily scratched, the only remedy is to sand or grind down to fresh material. Fireslate says its possible to use woodworking tools and sandpaper but notes that the job goes much faster with diamond abrasives and stone-polishing tools.
If you attempt this yourself, be sure to keep the surface damp to control dust. Airborne silica dust is classified as a carcinogen and can cause silicosis, a serious and sometimes fatal lung disease. Wet-dry sandpaper and diamond abrasives stand up to moisture.
If you want professional restoration, two possibilities are Rose Restoration in Merrifield, Va. (800-413-9893; http://www.roserestoration.com) and Concrete Angle in Harpers Ferry, W.Va. (301-514-1766), both of which work throughout the Washington area. Rose specializes in marble and often refers jobs involving concrete to Ron Rinehart, owner of Concrete Angle. The cost might run $500 to $2,000, depending on surface area.
For the sealer, Fireslate recommends Lithofin PSI. However, the manufacturer has since replaced that product with Lithofin MN Stain Stop, which costs $50 a liter at http://www.mystonecare.com. Rose and Concrete Angle also use penetrating sealers and include application in their prices.
One more tip, courtesy of John Forguson, the general manager at Mystonecare.com: Forget about topping the sealed countertop with tung oil, as the Fireslate Web site suggests. On a sealed surface, the oil will create a mottled look that appears stained. If you want the darker color that tung oil would create, he suggests using Lithofin MN Colour Intensifier, which is also a penetrating sealer, rather than the basic version. One bonus: Colour Intensifier is only $27 a liter.
You mentioned wanting to avoid having to baby the countertop. Unfortunately, you will still need to be reasonably attentive. The sealer should make the countertop resistant to stains. But you still couldnt leave a puddle, especially one with vinegar or other acid, sitting there for hours. Nor will resurfacing protect against dents from knife blades. Use a generous-size cutting board, or several.
