Charles City School Board sees schematic design for new middle school - October 30, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

CHARLES CITY | Architects presented a schematic design for a new Charles City Middle School that includes learning spaces of various sizes, an outdoor classroom and an amphitheater to the school board on Monday evening.

The design for the $17.6 million building to be constructed at the current high school campus also includes a competition gym with seating for 1,800 people that could be used for high school athletics and a commons area with a "treehouse" -- a series of glass-enclosed areas on either side of the staircase between the first and second floors.

Sam Johnson from BLDD Architects cautioned the board the schematic design phase "is the honeymoon phase" and some hard choices will need to be made before bids are taken.

The building design includes a lot of glass to let in natural daylight, even in the gym.

The learning spaces range from 150 square feet for a semi-enclosed "cave," where up to three students can work together, to 2,800 square feet for the collaborative commons area. There also are 1,200-square-foot exploratory and design labs and smaller lecture spaces and labs, including a media lab.

Jeff Johnson of BLDD said the treehouse could be a "hangout spot" for students but it also could be another learning space.

He said teachers have been involved in the design from the beginning.

Jean Underwood of BLDD noted students also gave the firm their ideas in May.

Jeff Johnson said the design lends itself to exciting learning projects, such as having students do their own talk show in which they would be producers, presenters, stage designers and technicians.

He said the overall design concept for the new school "reinvents education as you know it."

$10 million development to open in southeast GR - October 30, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. After nearly a year of construction, a new $10 million development is near completion at the corner Hall and Madison.

Southtown Square consists of two dozen apartments and 6,000 square feet of retail space.

Linc Community Revitalization, a local non-profit is spearheading the project.

Future tenants are excited, but so are other businesses in the Madison Square neighborhood on Grand Rapids southeast side.

The future housing tenants are moving in on Friday, but the retail space wont be completed for at least a month.

We know that children that have healthier homes and more stable housing do better in school. Theyre parents are more likely to stay at their jobs and just makes family life so much better when you have your housing needs met, said Jeremy Deroo with LINC.

Deroo said that the new development is just the latest investment in the Madison Square neighborhood.

This is a great addition to a neighborhood thats really been in a point of transition for years. The neighborhood has had over $30 million invested in the last four years or so, said Deroo.

Jung Park has owned OJs Enterprises across the street for more than 25 years. Park said that its a neighborhood that is riddled with crime.

Once in a while we hear these gun shots, shootings, things like that. A couple months ago we heard the gun shot outside in the parking lot and police came all over the place, said Park.

Remodeling of May Day Stadium Completed - October 30, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Pyongyang, October 28 (KCNA) -- The May Day Stadium was splendidly remodeled to match the natural scenery of the picturesque Rungna Island.

The 150,000-seater stadium has football field, hall for preparatory exercise, bedrooms for players, room for coaches, room for referees, test and registration room and others to meet the requirements of international standard. There are also a swimming pool, table-tennis hall, mini-golf field, recovery hall and other sports and cultural and welfare facilities and service network built at the best level.

A ceremony of marking the completion of the remodeling of the stadium took place on Tuesday.

Present at the ceremony were members of the State Physical Culture and Sports Guidance Commission, officials concerned, players and coaches who proved successful at the 17th Asian Games and world championships, soldiers and builders who participated in the remodeling project, officials in the sports field, sportspersons, working people and youths and students.

Choe Ryong Hae, member of the Presidium of the Political Bureau and secretary of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea who is chairman of the State Physical Culture and Sports Guidance Commission, made an address.

He said that the May Day Stadium is a great structure remodeled thanks to the energetic guidance of supreme leader Kim Jong Un and patriotic devotion of service personnel and people of the country.

He called for building more structures of lasting value for the prosperity of the country and the happiness of its people with the same spirit and mettle as were displayed in the remodeling of the stadium.

He underscored the need for all officials and working people to conduct brisk mass sporting activities to raise a hot wind of sports across the country.

He appealed to all the people to work harder full of faith in sure victory and optimism in order to bring earlier the future of a thriving country where people's dream and ideal will become a shining reality under the leadership of Kim Jong Un.

Remodeling DIY? How to deal with poor customer service - October 30, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

When I arrived at my friend's house, I did not yet know the trouble I'd caused. Jean and her husband, Tony, graciously squired me to the guest room, where I set my overnight bag. Then they showed me to the bathroom down the hall.

"You've done such a nice job," I said, knowing they had worked hard on renovating the three-bedroom, two-bath house they bought two years ago in South Tampa.

Little did I know how hard.

Then one of them, I can't remember which, said, "We just installed that toilet 30 minutes ago."

They shared a glance.

I cocked my head. I noted a row of sweat beads on Tony's brow.

"We had a few problems," he said.

"You didn't get a new toilet for me, did you?" I, the root of inconvenience, asked.

"No. Yes. Well," Tony said.

"We were getting it, anyway," Jean said.

A Doctors Hospital representative tells NBC 26 they are functioning normally right now. A patient was in the hospital's ER Thursday night who was not feeling well and had recently traveled from Africa. It was determined the patient had not been in a high risk area. Even still, we're told "Ebola Protocol" was followed and the patient was screened and cleared by the CDC and the Health Department. We'll have any updates for you tonight on NBC 26 News at 11.
