Track workers tend to Kyle Busch after he slammed into an unprotected wall during the Xfinity Series race on Feb. 21. Busch fractured his right leg and broke his left foot. The crash prompted Daytona International Speedway to expand SAFER Barriers around the track.

DAYTONA BEACH The aftermath of Kyle Buschs Feb. 21 wreck at Daytona was met immediately with promises to upgrade the tracks safety standards.

Those promises began taking real shape Wednesday with the announcement that Daytona International Speedway will get more SAFER Barriers on those sections of concrete walls that remained bare at the time of Buschs accident, which resulted in a compound fracture to his right leg and fracture to his left foot.

The initiatives announced Wednesday:

The inside retaining wall, inside Turn 1 and beginning with the exit from the infield road course, will be realigned and fitted with the Steel and Foam Energy Reduction (SAFER) Barrier. Also, 20,000 square feet of asphalt will be put down to replace the grass in that area of the track the lack of traction on grass adds to the inability to slow or possibly control a wrecking car.

Also, as soon as possible, the Speedway will begin covering the outside wall of the backstretch with SAFER Barrier.

Based on material availability and timing, we will install SAFER Barrier on the outside backstretch wall and will complete as much as possible prior to the July NASCAR weekend, track president Joie Chitwood III said. Following the July races, we will complete any remaining installation of SAFER Barrier on the outside backstretch wall and continue to install SAFER Barrier on the remaining areas of the property.

We will provide additional updates regarding our safety initiatives as circumstances warrant. The safety of the competitors and our fans is our top priority.

MERRILLVILLE | Efforts continue to extend sanitary sewer service to an interior area of the Southmoor Park subdivision.

Merrillville Conservancy District board member Ed Yerga said money has been allocated for such a project. Yerga said the cost to install new sewers hasnt been finalized, but he estimated it could be between $1 million and $2 million.

There are other steps that must occur before the project could begin.

Although the town isnt affiliated with MCD, the Town Council must adopt an ordinance that would authorize the sanitary sewer entity to annex parcels of Southmoor Park that currently rely on septic systems into the conservancy districts service area.

Yerga said a draft ordinance has been prepared by MCD, and it has been delivered to the town.

Councilman Shawn Pettit said the measure will be reviewed by Merrillville leaders and Town Attorney John Bushemi, and its possible the ordinance could be considered for approval during the councils March 24 meeting.

If Southmoor properties are annexed, those homeowners would start paying a conservancy tax, Yerga said.

Some parcels of Southmoor Park already receive service from MCD, so there are existing sanitary sewer lines in the subdivision.

A timeline hasnt yet been established to install the new sewers, but Yerga indicated he would like to see the work get started as soon as possible.

Southmoor Park resident Clarence Phillips is among those who have been pursuing the sewer service expansion in the residential area. He has encountered issues with his septic system for years.

Sewer project could be coming to Merrillville subdivision

GARDNER Firefighters from Gardner and three neighboring towns fought a two-alarm blaze in a vacant building into the wee hours of the morning Wednesday.

Shortly after 11 p.m. Tuesday, firefighters were dispatched to a building fire at 163-165 Pine St., according to Fire Lt. Craig Osowski.

"Upon arrival, we found fire showing out of the basement in the rear of the building, extending all three floors on the porches," Lt. Osowski said. "All the fire was contained to the basement and the rear porches. The rest of the building received smoke damage."

A second alarm was immediately struck, bringing in mutual aid from Westminster, Winchendon and Hubbardston, Lt. Osowski said.

Because of the lay of the land, Lt. Osowski said, the residential building is two stories in the front and four in the back.

Lt. Osowski said firefighters had to deal with a steep hill to get to the back, as well as 3 feet of snow, to gain access. The last firetruck left the site at 2:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Lt. Osowski said the fire is under investigation; firefighters do not believe the fire was caused intentionally. There were no injuries, he said.
