CENTRAL ILLINOIS -- A Central Illinois business is facing some heat after its customers say they paid for a service they didn't receive.
When Amy Lollar's dryer broke back in February she called the same appliance repair company she used when her fridge broke, A Plus Appliance Repair out of Metamora.
He quoted me $187 and some change to repair the motor and then labor," said Amy Lollar. "He told me he needed the money up front for the parts and that he wanted me to write him a check to him personally."
Lollar's check for $187.97 was cashed but the repair never happened -- and Lollar's money was never returned.
So she called the Better Business Bureau.
"BBB has received a pattern of complaints with this particular company, said Jessica Tharp of the Central Illinois Better Business Bureau.
There are a total of 17 complaints on the BBB website and even more on other review sites.
Those complaints range from taking money for parts or labor and then not fixing the appliance, not correctly diagnosing the problem and not showing up for appointments.
"Every little penny definitely makes a difference," Lollar said. "And so when people just take money from you...that's a student loan payment for the month that's just in somebody else's pocket for no reason.

Less than a year after shutting its retail store in the Sodo neighborhood of Seattle, Sears is coming back to town with a different crew.
The retailer plans to hire up to 70 employees in a new software engineering office in Seattles Columbia Center tower, said Arun Arora, president of home appliances and services with the Hoffman Estates, Ill., retailer.
Arora said the office, expected to open in May, would develop applications and analytic tools in an effort to make its appliance repair business more efficient and user-friendly for customers. Sears hired former Amazon.com employees Ian Clarkson and James Coyle to run the operation last year, Arora said.
The retailer is the latest company to tap into the pool of Seattle area technology workers. Electronics retailer Best Buy last month said it would establish an e-commerce outpost in Seattle.
Sears, struggling from competition with online retailers and brick-and-mortar competitors, last year closed its historic Sodo store and auto center.

Another large building has been approved for center city Allentown, but not without some criticism of its design from a member of the Allentown Planning Commission.
Called City Center Flats, the 11-story structure will be built on the northeast corner of Eighth and Walnut streets.
A five-level apartment building, containing 200 one and two-bedroom units, will be built over a 700-space parking garage.
The structure also will include some retail shops along South Eighth Street.
The plan won unanimous final approval from the planning commission Tuesday, with one abstention.
It is just the latest approved project from City Center Investment Corp., which is transforming downtown Allentown with new buildings.
James Gentile, president of North Star Construction Management, spoke on behalf of the plan before the commission. His company designed the building and will construct it.
Although listed as an 11-story building on the planning commission agenda, Gentile told the commission City Center Flats will have five levels of apartments over five levels of parking.
He later indicated the 11th level is where Walnut Street drops down toward Seventh Street at the east end of the building.

200 apartments approved for center-city Allentown
ALLENTOWN, Pa. -
Allentown City Council soon will be asked to change zoning so a 61-unit apartment building called Sacred Heart Senior Residences can be constructed at the northeast corner of Fifth and Turner streets in the city.
To do the project, zoning in that area will have to be changed from medium high density residential to high density residential.
On Tuesday, developers of the proposed project asked for, and got, a recommendation from the Allentown planning commission supporting the zoning change request they will make to City Council.
If the zoning is changed and the project eventually is approved, the apartments will offer independent living and affordable housing to seniors who are 62 and older, said Kyle Speece, senior developer with Pennrose Properties.
Speece added the place will not offer assisted living, but will allow seniors to age in place and have access to health services offered by nearby Sacred Heart Hospital.
The hospital will not own Sacred Heart Senior Residences, but has been involved from the outset in putting together the concept.
Oldrich Foucek, chairman of the planning commission, boiled it down to its an apartment house with some doctors offices on the first level.
If City Council agrees to the developers' proposed zoning change, they eventually will return to the planning commission for approval of detailed land development plans for the project.
Atty. Joseph Fitzpatrick, who represented the developers Tuesday, said other blocks in that immediate neighborhood already are zoned high density residential.

Thinking of adding a patio or deck to extend your home's living space? Concrete decks and patios have a well-deserved reputation as being easy on the budget. But their affordability is not their only virtue. Outdoor concrete installations have lots more to offer homeowners than low price alone.
Low Maintenance. Exterior concrete requires exceptionally low maintenance. There's no need to spend hours staining or painting. Usually a quick spray down with your garden hose will be enough to restore itsattractive appearance.
Durability. Concrete is also strong and long-lasting -- it won't splinter, rot, burn, or become infested with termites. The downside, of course, is the difficulty of removal, so make sure you know exactly what you want before you install a concrete patio or deck.
Great for Building a Garden Living Space. If you'd like to create a garden living space that's usable for a large part of the year, think concrete. It's easy and safe to incorporate a fire pit or fireplace (or even an entire outdoor kitchen -- super trendy!) into a concrete patio design. Want to add a soothing water feature or a few pieces of handy built-in concrete furniture, such as tables and seating? No problem.
Gorgeous Textures and Colors. If you think a concrete patio or deck install will be drab and dreary, you haven't seen today's concrete finishes! The range of textures and colors available is simply amazing. Please be aware, though, that sealing is advised to protect the finish. While this tends to make the surface slippery, the problem can be avoided withoutaffecting its good looksby mixing a grit additive into the final coat of sealant.
Concrete Paver Advantages. Concrete pavers can give a lovely casual airto a patio or path. They may require more maintenance than slab concrete, though, in terms of removing weeds that grow in the sand fill between the pavers (minimize this by proper preparation before installing.) On the other hand, they are the most flexible option, whether you want to reshape, expand, or reduce the size of your patio, or even remove it completely someday.
Cracking Control. Concerns about cracking are valid. Concrete does tend to crack as it settles. However this can be offset by adding control joints (deliberately weakened lines), usually as part of a decorative pattern. The concrete will then crack along the joints and not randomly, so that the appearance is not negatively affected.
Zoning and Building Permits. Don't forget to consider local zoning laws and building permit specifications when planning construction in your outdoor area. Although a permit may not be necessary if you build less than 30" above grade, this varies according to your location, especially if you live in a flood hazard area. Requirements are generally more demanding for decks. Please note that building a concrete deck is not a DIY job, but one for a licensed contractor experienced at working with poured in place concrete. (In fact, we're surprised that deck construction of any kind is often thought of as a great do-it-yourself project. When you're putting up a load-bearing structure several feet above the ground, you have to really know your local building code.)
Resale Value. A deck or patio may be almost a "must" if you want to market your home, especially when most houses for sale in your neighborhood have one. Although you are not likely to recoup the full cost to install a concrete patio or deck when you sell, it will add curb appeal and attract more potential buyers.
