MESA - A fire quickly put out by sprinklers saved residents of a retirement living community in Mesa Monday morning, according to fire officials.

The fire began after flammable material was left on top of a stove in the three-story complex, located near Main Street and Recker Road, according to the Mesa Fire Department. The fire did not spread farther than the kitchen, and was extinguished by an in-house sprinkler system.

Several residents were displaced due to smoke and water damage, the department added. It is unknown how many residents were displaced, but officials know of at least three apartments damaged by the water flow from the sprinkler.

No one was injured in the fire.

Fire officials said the quick suppression of the fire saved the lives of those residing in the complex and the property from suffering major damage.
