Jackson Hole, Wyoming (PRWEB) August 30, 2013
Wyomings Fremont County School District #21 has selected Jackson Hole architectural firm Ward + Blake Architects in association with veteran national school design firm Fanning/Howey Associates to design the Fort Washakie pre-K to 8th and high school campus in Fort Washakie, Wyoming. A design charette on the project will bring together the design team and stakeholders for a three-day long brainstorming session. The design will incorporate elements that reference the areas Native American cultural context.
The new Fort Washakie, Wyo., school will provide classroom, recreational, and extracurricular space for approximately 800 students, serving pre-kindergarten through 12th grade in two buildings totaling 180,000 square feet. In addition, the school facilities department has authorized an "enhancement" to the project that will allow for 4,342 square feet to be dedicated to cultural activities such as traditional language and dance practice spaces. The project is scheduled for completion in 2016 at a cost of $45 million.
Fort Washakie is located at the confluence of the South and North Forks of the Little Wind River and is named for Shoshone Chief Washakie, namesake for the historic military Fort Washakie. Chief Washakie was known as a great supporter of education, and his policies figured into the first school at Fort Washakie being established as part of the Fort Bridger Treaty of 1868 with a first class of 35 students, both Native American and white.
"We want to bring meaning to the project by recognizing the cultural context of the Eastern Shoshone traditions," says Ward + Blake Principal Mitch Blake about the firms plans for the school design. "We plan to integrate cultural symbols that imbue meaning to the schools users into the design of both structures."
Ward + Blake has designed several notable buildings for education, including the Teton County Childrens Learning Center and the St. Johns Medical Center Childrens Learning Center, which is still in the planning stages. The Teton County Childrens Learning Center "The Ranch", a LEED gold building, was built in conjunction with D.W. Arthur Architects and was short-listed in the schools category of the 2012 World Architectural Festival in Singapore.

Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Ms Amal Pepple
The Federal Government has advised architects and other professionals in the built environment to desist from requesting high service charges from their clients.
It said experts in the industry were becoming inaccessible as a result of their high consultancy fees regardless of the fact that most of their clients were poor.
The Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Ms. Amal Pepple, said this at the 24th edition and annual exposition of building materials and construction technology tagged: ARCHIBUILT 2013, organised by the Nigerian Institute of Architects in Abuja.
She said, I wish to observe that the desire of members of the NIA and other core professionals in the built environment to provide solutions to everyday living will be richly met by recognising the need to create opportunities for the citizenry to have improved access to professional services.
One way of doing this is by charging appropriate and discriminatory fees in recognition of the high poverty level in the country and the need to ensure improved access of professional services and expertise to even the poorest poor.
It is in this regard that I find it odd that very often we lament that there is a preponderance of quacks in the built environment without realising the need to reduce our charges to make them affordable and accessible to all the income streams in the country.
The minister stated that it was by patronising such quacks that the built environment had continued to be bedevilled by rising incidents of professional negligence, wanton impunity, corruption, appalling standards resulting in dilapidated critical national infrastructure, failed buildings, building collapse and fire hazards, among others.

NEW YORK , Aug. 29, 2013 /CNW/ - Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects has been selected to design a mixed-use development for Trinity Wall Street, the historic Episcopal parish in Lower Manhattan that dates to 1697.
(Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20130828/NE70412)
Replacing the parish office building from the 1920s at 68-74 Trinity Place , the new building will include a six- or seven-story base to house mission programs and related offices, topped by a 25-story residential tower. The base will include a parish hall, the Sunday school and rooms for use by community organizations. Revenue from the residential tower will support the church's ministry and philanthropy.
"We are delighted to be able to engage the extraordinary talents of Pelli Clarke Pelli as we move forward in the design and development process to create an inspiring new mixed-use ministry building that complements Richard Upjohn's historic Trinity Church ," said Rev. Dr . James H. Cooper , rector.
Trinity Real Estate, the entity that manages the parish's six million square feet of commercial property, will next select a developer. Trinity took the unusual step of selecting an architect first to underscore the importance of a design that respects the iconic Trinity Church and its surroundings.
"We are thrilled to receive this entirely unique assignment," said Cesar Pelli , senior principal. "This gorgeous jewel of a site, a very clear urban room with a natural landscape surrounding, is unlike any place else in the world. We look forward to a continuing exchange of ideas to create a building of its moment, next to a building for all time."
PCPA's preliminary design is transparent at the base to highlight the church's mission activities. Terrace gardens will recall the scenic churchyard. Access to the church from Trinity Place will be maintained via pedestrian bridge.
Construction is expected to begin in the fall of 2014. Completion is slated for 2017.
Founded in 1977 and led by Cesar Pelli, Fred Clarke , and Rafael Pelli, Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects has designed some of the world's most recognizable buildings, including the World Financial Center in New York , the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur , and the International Finance Centre in Hong Kong . The firm has been honored with critical acclaim and hundreds of design awards, including the American Institute of Architects' Firm Award.

The acting Registrar of the Architects Registration Council of Ghana (ARC), Mrs. Stella Naa Dzagble Arthiabah, has announced that its Continuous Professional Development Programme will soon be made mandatory for all architects.
In addition, she said, the ARC will from this semester collaborate with the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) on lecturing relevant topics in the Professional Practice and Management course.
This, she explained, is to get all architects to be abreast with new and current information necessary to make informed decisions and offer the best service to clients.
She further noted that, globally, buildings of public interest and of an iconic nature are subject to Architectural Design Competitions, and recommended that We could start ... with the new airport the government is speculating of building at Dodowa.
Mrs. Arthiabah made the announcement on Thursday in Accra, during the 13th Induction Ceremony of the ARC.
In all, 23 Probationers were inducted out of 63 candidates who sat for the 2012 Professional Practice Examination (PPE) conducted by the ARC.
The induction ceremony is a major event on the ARCs calendar which bridges the academic and professional life of every architect.
It climaxes six years of academic qualification at the university, a minimum of two years coaching and apprenticeship under a qualified senior architect, and passing the PPE to gain state licencing.

The Nigerian Institute of Architects, Bayelsa State chapter, has expressed fears over the future of buildings in the state.
The NIA said most of the buildings in the state could collapse in future because of rising population of quacks in most building sites.
Members of the NIA, led by its state chairman, Stella Raine, stated this during a courtesy visit to the Commissioner for Capital City Development, Zuwa Konugha, in Yenagoa, the state capital, on Thursday.
Raine decried the non-involvement of professional architects in most of the massive construction taking place in the state and expressed fears that the development could spell doom for most buildings and plans in the state.
She said the lifespan of most buildings in the state was uncertain, saying that most areas had been turned into squalors because architects were not involved in the planning and design of the buildings.
She said, The state may witness massive collapse of buildings in a few years time as a result of lack of patronage of architects but non-professionals that have taken over most sites.
Professional monitoring from the design stage is not there. Those not in the profession are handling the designs, a development that is dangerous for the future of buildings in the state. They do not conform to the basic professional standards in building designs and plans.
The NIA chairman said the structural failures might not be seen now, but that they would certainly occur in the future.
When such a situation occurred, people will begin to blame the professionals instead of the non-professionals that were contracted to construct the buildings, she said.
In his remarks, Konugha, who regretted the absence of architects in the ministry, said the importance of the profession in building and planning could not be overemphasised.
