Historic Winnetka home slated for demolition - August 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Another historic Winnetka home is one step closer to demolition after officials declined on Monday to delay a proposed tear-down.

Louise Holland, chairwoman of the village's Landmark Preservation Commission, said she was saddened that the village was losing the circa-1920 home at 220 Birch St., known as the Gate Lodge and designed by renowned Chicago architect Andrew Rebori.

"I'm sorry to see the house go but how far do you go?" said Holland, adding: "It's a property rights issue."

While officials can issue a two-month moratorium on tear-down requests, Holland said unless homeowners are willing to consider preserving and renovating the existing home, the delay is ultimately unable to prevent demolition.

Indeed, while the commission required that property owners Christopher and Mary Freeburg hire an architectural historian to conduct a Historical and Architectural Impact Study, the study's findings concluded that renovations to the home over the years had already compromised its "architectural integrity."

Last month, the Freeburgs told officials that after exploring renovation options, they decided new construction was the best choice because the home does not have a basement.

On Monday, the Freeburgs said they would consider donating the stately pillars and urns that flank the home's driveway to a historic preservation organization.

Oro demolition team member killed - August 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A DEMOLITION turned bloody in Barangay Puntod on Tuesday when a member of the demolition team was allegedly killed by one of the residents who refused to leave while a police was injured after a melee ensued.

Armed with the writ of demolition issued by Branch 20 of the Regional Trial Court, a demolition team dismantled the houses of the families residing in the area who were ordered to leave as soon as possible whether the lands where their houses stand are titled or not.

Tension gripped as the demolition team began dismantling houses within the perimeters of Dacudao compound particularly the western part where residents blocked every passage by putting piles of sacks, scattering broken glass bottles, and setting on fire rubber materials.

Albert Acma, 26, a resident Kauswagan and a member of the demolition team, was shot dead when a bullet hit the upper portion of his right eye fired allegedly by a resident known only as Estong who escaped after the incident while PO1 Mardonio Malihaw of City Public Safety Company was shot in his left shank by allegedly another shooter.

Jonathan Bandianon, a colleague of Acma, said the police instructed them to tear down the sheet roofing used as barricade by the residents. The police ordered us to open the barricade. Albert, who was nearer to the post, immediately got shot at his right eye. People ran away and I heard shouting and screaming. When I looked at Albert, he was lying on the floor with blood oozing out from his head, Bandianon said.

    Unplanned demolition

Bandianon and Acma have been doing their job for almost three years now. And he blamed the police for the unplanned demolition.

It was clear the police were at fault on this one. They sent us without conducting a clearing operation first. It was only minutes later they realized that everything was unplanned when they had to re-route because they could not penetrate the area anymore, he said.

Superintendent Aaron Mandia, head of the City Public Safety Company, however, insisted there was a clearing operation before they removed the blockade.

Previously, the barangay captain (Marvin Beja) has negotiated with the resistance force, but the latter insisted they should not be included from the operations. Prior to the incident, the sheriff talked with them for the last time, but still they insisted. We have already expected that they have arms but we did not expect that it was that abrupt, Mandia said.

Sunset Strip's House of Blues reportedly slated for demolition - August 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Sunset Strip could be losing another music venue.

According to a Bloomberg report, the West Hollywood outpost of the national House of Blues music venue chain will be demolished to make way for a new hotel complex. Construction is scheduled to take place sometime toward the end of 2015.

The venue, which opened in 1994 and is operated by Live Nation, became known for hosting hip-hop and R&B shows alongside a mixed slate of rock and gospel acts.

The House of Blues site is one of many older Sunset Strip properties slated for redevelopment in favor of luxury hotel complexes. Bloomberg reports that developer Combined Properties is planning a mixed-use complex with 40 condos, 149 hotel rooms and an on-site entertainment facility.

The move is the latest shift in the Strip's music scene, which has changed dramatically over the last few years. Promoter Goldenvoice recently took over the longtime Strip staple the Roxy and brought a busier slate of buzzed-about acts. The Sunset Strip Music Festival has grown into a thriving local event and the neighborhood's flagship annual concert.

However, longtime venue Key Club shuttered last year, replaced by an outpost of the nightclub chain 1OAK, and other venues like the Whisky a Go Go and Viper Room have struggled to find a place in the contemporary L.A. music scene.

Ashton Spatz, a representative for Live Nation, told The Times in a statement that Live Nation is looking for a new venue for House of Blues.

"Regarding the story, our legendary House of Blues on Sunset Boulevard the flagship for 20 years of our popular venues around the country will operate business as usual while we look for a new home," the statement said. "We have a terrific relationship with our landlord who has other plans to develop the property and were working together on a very smooth transition. We have two-plus years to find that perfect spot for a new Los Angeles House of Blues home with no interruption for music fans. Stay tuned. The best is yet to come!"

Demolition of Stocktons run-down Victoria Estate under way as part of regeneration scheme - August 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Victoria Estate demolition

The demolition of the first homes on Stocktons run-down Victoria Estate is well under way as part of a major regeneration scheme.

The 1960s estate behind Splash leisure centre comprises more than 250 homes and so far 18 properties have been demolished.

A further 18 will come down by the end of September so the site can start to be redeveloped.

Stockton Council and Tristar homes are working with local people to ensure residents and their families can be accommodated in alternative accommodation elsewhere in the borough.

To date more than 100 households have been relocated as part of a phased approach, giving the opportunity to start the demolition on the site.

The relocation programme was agreed with residents following detailed and extensive consultation in 2012.

Stockton Councils Cabinet member for housing and community safety, Councillor Steve Nelson, said: It is great to see yet another successful regeneration scheme begin to take shape, particularly as it will complement the wider regeneration of Stockton town centre and the Northshore development on the nearby banks of the River Tees.
