Helicopter Only Option for Whitewash Heads Demolition
For immediate release
04th August 2014
The first helicopter-assisted residential demolition will get underway this week after months of planning and evaluation of potential options. The operation will be run with precision to remove about 100 tonnes of house materials from a property on the Sumner cliffs, perched some 70 metres above sea level, and airlifted across the ocean to a landing zone on Anzac Drive. From here it will be off-loaded and transported by road to Burwood Recovery Park. The entire operation will involve more than 100 round trips and is estimated to take between 4 to 5 weeks to complete the deconstruction and removal.
The property on Whitewash Heads Road was severely damaged in the June 2011 earthquake and was deemed uneconomic to repair late last year. Since then Southern Response has undertaken a robust evaluation of numerous methodologies before deciding on the helicopter-assisted demolition program, after heavy rain early in the winter made digger and truck access by road impossible.
Tom Newton, demolition leader for the Southern Response Earthquake Recovery Project, says that the process of determining the safest, most efficient and cost effective method for the demolition has been grueling.
We initially ruled out helicopter involvement due to the apparent cost involved but when it became clear that traditional approaches would simply not work on this site we went back to the heli operators and negotiated a way forward. Properties like this one are severely compromised and leaving them standing is simply not an option, neither for the homeowner nor for Southern Response.
Despite the delay in getting demolition underway, the process has been invaluable in terms of working with contractors to find agreeable and innovative solutions, says Southern Response CEO, Peter Rose. This is really where benefits of collaboration are beginning to come to the fore, he added.
Material will be airlifted from the site in 2 tonne certified bags, with each round trip taking approximately 8 minutes to complete.
Helicopter operations will be carried out by local operator Helicontrax Ltd. Owner Ben Walker says the job will be a standard lifting operation by transiting from point to point at our legal operating height.

In a political showdown for the ages, Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams will take on Lt. Gov. Spencer Cox in the Dog Days of Summer Demolition Derby this weekend during the Salt Lake County Fair.

SOUTH JORDAN To hear Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams tell it, driving in a demolition derby is in Utah Lt. Gov. Spencer Cox's DNA.
But that didn't dissuade McAdams from challenging Cox to compete against him in the Dog Days of Summer Demolition Derby on Saturday night, a concluding event of the Salt Lake County Fair.
What Cox didn't know when McAdams talked him into driving in the derby was that the mayor had a warmup event under his belt.
"I had a practice session in Riverton, and its on to the main event," McAdams said in an interview Monday.
McAdams placed a respectable fifth in the Riverton Demolition Derby, winning his heat to advance to the next round.
"He took a couple of head-ons, but I was very impressed with what the mayor did. Its good to see a politician with a little spunk," said Jim "Gumby" Simko, of Stirrin' Dirt Racing, which is running the event.
Cox hasn't driven in a demolition derby before, "but its the one thing that Fairview is kind of famous for," he said. "For the last 30 years of my life, Ive been attending demolition derbies regularly."

Members of Singleton Excavating take down field lights on ballfields Monday at Bowers Park to prepare for the construction of eight new fields and other amenities as part of a $4.34 million renovation project.
Demolition is under way at Bowers Park to clear out its aging ball field complex to allow for the construction of a new one.
A planned $4.34 million project for the park off Hargrove Road will build eight new fields for baseball and softball, a new concession stand and center pavilion with restrooms, shaded bleachers, new fencing and other upgrades.
Becky Booker, spokeswoman for the Tuscaloosa Park and Recreation Authority, said the new fields are expected be completed by spring 2015.
On Monday, Singleton Excavation of Centreville was taking out light poles and expects to move on to the concrete and other structures on the eastern side of the park later this week.
I'm hoping in the next 10 days we'll have (it finished), if everything goes good, said co-owner Donnie Singleton.
Funding for the work is being shared by the city of Tuscaloosa and the Tuscaloosa County Commission.
It is part of an overall $7.53 million package of projects to upgrade the Bowers and Munny Sokol parks that was approved by the two governments in October.
Of this, the city is funding
70 percent, or $5.27 million, while the county is paying 30 percent, or $2.56 million.
