MANTIN (Oct 31): DAP's Seremban MP Anthony Loke and Rasah MP Teo Kok Seong were among about 20 people arrested here this morning as the demolition of the Kampung Hakka historic village started.
A total of six houses and a community hall were brough down by the authorities.
Negeri Sembilan assemblypersons P Gunasekaran (Senawang), Ng Chin Tsai (Temiang), Chew Seh Yong (Bahau) and Arul Jambunathan (Nilai) were among those held by police.
Also picked up were PSM secretary-general S Arutchelvan and Suaram executive director Nalini Elumalai.
Artutchelvan and Seremban PSM committee member S Gandhi were the first to be arrested and taken away in a police vehicle after they tried to stall the destruction.
Villagers, who were served with demolition notices by property developer Mega 9 Sdn. Bhd. yesterday, stood guard outside their homes from early morning.
At 9.30 am, police officers cordoned off the place with yellow tape.
Half an hour later, police ordered non-residents to evacuate the premises.
After a stand off, authorities moved in to tear down an empty house and then tore down another house.

FLINT (WJRT) -
(10/31/13) - Demolition began Thursday on the old Flint Journal printing facility to make room for the new Flint Farmers' Market.
The new market is set to open, rain or shine, on May 1.
Organizers and most vendors ABC12 talked to are excited to be making progress on the big move.
"Looks like they're tearing down a building doesn't it? This is very exciting though, because we have said that the market's going to be open May 1, and this is the first step and getting it down that road," said Dick Ramsdell, Farmers Market manager.
About six months from opening day, Ramsdell says demolition crews just starting tearing down just the west side of the old printing facility to make room for more parking.
"Lots and lots of folks have told us they don't think there's enough parking down here. There actually was. And actually I think the atmosphere will be much more like a market on that east side of the building," Ramsdell said.
The new market will have more than twice as much indoor space as the current market, with the old printing facility's atrium as the centerpiece - but there's more to it than that.
"A lot of folks have the misconception that it's just going to be an indoor market, and it's not. We will be able to have room to bring the outside pavilion right down First Street," Ramsdell said.
Right now, the market has 33 vendors. The new facility has 46 committed and is still looking for a few more.

McHENRY A long vacant property identified by the city as it developed its newest incentive program is set to be demolished.
The property owner, Terry Wilborn, submitted demolition requests for the former office building at 4719 W. Elm St. and a vacant house at 4909 W. Elm St., a lot that is now zoned commercial.
The Landmark Commission will review the requests at its meeting Tuesday. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. in the classroom at the McHenry Municipal Center, 333 Green St.
All demolition requests must go before the Landmark Commission, which will review the buildings for historical significance, if any. If the Landmark Commission approves the demolition, the request does not need to go before the City Council.
Both properties are in poor condition, Deputy City Administrator Doug Martin said. The office building sustained water damage, and the house is "dilapidated."
The demolitions are not in preparation for any particular project that Martin is aware of, he said. Wilborn has not filed a building permit for a subsequent project with the city.
If the demolition was part of a larger project that centered around the opening of a new business or residential building or the expansion of an existing business, it might have qualified for the city's newest incentive program.
The initiative was developed with the properties located along Route 120 between Meadow Lane and Ringwood Road in mind. The former office building was one of the properties pointed to when the idea was initially proposed a year and a half ago.
No applications have been submitted to the city since the council approved the program in June 2012.
Applications are evaluated on the amount of sales or property tax that would be generated, financial feasibility and if safety improvements are included and require council approval.

Building and racing demolition derby cars is more than a hobby for one Florence family; it is a legacy.
Dustin Looney has been building demolition cars with his dad, Terry Looney, since he was 16. Now at the age of 23 he can practically put a whole car together by himself, but he still enjoys working with his dad.
It makes it fun, he said. My dad and uncle did it as kids. They passed it to my brother, Matt Druse, who passed it to me.
Several nephews and Druses son are now interested in the family hobby. Looney said his dad builds the engine and front end, family friend Keith Ottensmeier welds, and Looney does everything else.
Its something we like to pass down, he said. I have friends I build them with, its fun.
The Looneys build their cars from scratch, starting with a frame, usually from some type of Ford or Lincoln. First they tilt the front end down, to better absorb impacts from hits.
Most Ford models are built with their front end at a slight upward angle, he said.
After reinforcing the frame and axles, they gut the cars body, take out the seats, gas tank, and all the glass, and add safety bars so the car will not crush the driver when rammed during competitions.
