The Berkley Board of Selectmen are expected to sign a contract with a Johnston, R.I.-based company to demolish the old Berkley Town Office building, according the towns executive secretary.
A contract bid from J.R. Vinagro Corporation was accepted by the town administration this week and is expected to be signed by the Berkley Board of Selectmen during an upcoming meeting, said Berkley Executive Secretary Paul Modlowski.
J.R. Vinagro made a bid asking for $151,000 for the demolition of the old municipal building, Modlowski said. A total of seven bids were submitted, and were opened on September 18. Modlowski said he met with NETCO project engineer Tom Kondel Tuesday night and completed the demolition contract document.
The town plans to build a new $2.6 million Berkley Town Hall, which will be built in the place of the partially condemned Berkley Town Offices. The entire project is budgeted for $3.5 million. Modlowski said the demolition would start as soon as possible. The towns initial estimate was that demolition would cost around $130,000, he said. Hazardous materials, including asbestos-laden pipes, must be removed from the building.
Modlowski previously said that actual construction on the new building is expected to begin in March after a contractor is selected.
The new building will be 9,800 square-feet, all on one floor, Modlowski said previously, and the new building will also include a space for the Berkley Council on Aging. The design firm selected hired by the town for the project is the Somerville-based Johnson Roberts Associates.
The original Town Office Building has been closed to the public since 2010 because of extensive structural problems. Built in 1926, the former Town Hall originally served as an elementary school. A trailer is currently set up across the street, where town boards meet and other town offices are temporarily located.
On December 2010, two-thirds of the aging building was condemned, leading to the creation of the Town Office Building Project Committee in March 2011. In November 2012, Berkley citizens voted to fund the project during Town Meeting, by a vote of 186-36.
Modlowski has said construction on the new building would start as soon as possible in 2014, with a goal of opening the building in March 2015.
Also on the agenda for Tuesday night, the Selectmen are planning to discuss the opening of a new restaurant called The Boondocks, opening at 11 N. Main St. at the Berkley Common. A hearing will be held on a request for an automotive license for Camping World, which is set to open on Myricks Street in Berkley.

City Controller Alan Butkovitz and the Department of Licenses and Inspections have apparently resolved their dispute over demolition records by L&I's giving the controller's auditors access to the department's computer system.
"We just have to make sure we can run it and do our own queries," said Deputy Controller Harvey Rice, signaling an end to two weeks of rhetorical volleys between Butkovitz and the Nutter administration. "We think this will give us the information we need to do our audit."
Spurred by the June 6 Center City building collapse that killed six people, Butkovitz announced July 24 that his office would audit the city's regulation of demolitions.
Nearly two months later, the controller complained that L&I still had not provided the documents needed for his investigation. In a letter, Butkovitz directed L&I Commissioner Carlton Williams to show up in his office four days later with the requested material, or else he would take "additional measures," such as holding up paychecks of unspecified L&I officials.
Instead of providing the underlying data, L&I initially responded Tuesday by sending 65,000 pages of documents as PDFs, which can be difficult to analyze with spreadsheet or database software.
After Butkovitz's auditors balked, Rice said, L&I brought its information technology experts into the discussions Wednesday, which led to the apparent resolution.
