Demolition is slated to begin soon on Berkleys condemned Town Hall building.
A large portion of the building, which was constructed in 1926 as an elementary school, was condemned in late 2010 over concerns related to its structural integrity.
Workers will begin to completely fence off the site on Saturday in preparation to take down the building. Removal of hazardous materials, such as asbestos, is expected to begin Nov. 4 with full demolition to follow, town Executive Secretary Paul Modlowski said.
Earlier this month, selectmen finalized a $151,000 contract with J.R. Vinagro Corp. for demolition of the former town office building.
Town officials, Modlowski said, expect to meet Monday with the contractor and project manager to discuss the upcoming demolition.
After the demolition is complete, plans call for a new 9,800-square-foot Town Hall to be built on the site. The new building would be a single-story structure that would host the Council on Aging as well as town offices.
We will advertise for a general contractor for the entire new building, Modlowski said. Were trying to get that done, hopefully, by the end of December.
Architectural plans, he said, are nearing 90 percent completion. Chicago-based Johnson Roberts Associates is creating the designs.
Voters last November authorized the town to issue up to $3.5 million in municipal bonds to fund the Town Hall project. The budget for the new construction alone is $2.6 million.
Town officials have said they hope to open the new Town Hall in 2015.

NEWTOWN, Conn., Oct. 25 (UPI) -- The demolition of Connecticut's Sandy Hook Elementary School has quietly begun, Newtown's highest elected official said 10 months after the mass murder.
"Small scale demo activity has begun and will accelerate over the next days," First Selectwoman Patricia Llodra told television station WVIT, West Hartford, Conn.
"The process of demolition is incremental, staged precisely and executed carefully," she said. "There is no wrecking-ball action. It is rather a piece-by-piece, section-by-section removal."
The work site is shielded from public view to prevent anyone from taking photos or videos. Contractors taking down the school where 20 schoolchildren and six adult staff members were killed Dec. 14 have signed confidentiality agreements, WVIT said.
The massacre was the second deadliest mass shooting by a single person in U.S. history, after the 2007 Virginia Tech massacre, which left 32 people dead.
The Sandy Hook shooting prompted renewed debate about gun control in the United States and led to stricter gun laws in Connecticut, New York and other nearby states.
All parts of the elementary school, as well as the playground, driveway and sidewalks, will be pulverized or melted down so pieces of the tragedy can't be taken as souvenirs or sold to bidders on eBay, Llodra said last week.
The 28-member Sandy Hook School Task Force voted unanimously May 15 to demolish the school and build a new one on the same spot.
Town voters voted overwhelmingly Oct. 5 to fund the project with a $49 million state grant.
The entrance to the new school, scheduled to open by December 2016, will be relocated so people won't have to walk in front of a firehouse where anguished parents waited hours before learning their children were dead, the Los Angeles Times said.

The Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministry has demanded an unreserved apology from the Enugu State Government for demolishing its South-East Regional Headquarters One, Enugu.
The church also described the demolition as a violation of the peoples right to worship as it looks forward to a courts decision on the demolition.
PUNCH Metro had reported penultimate week that the 5,000-seat auditorium, which served as the regional headquarters of the church, few metres away from the Zik Avenue Bridge, Uwani, was demolished by officials of the Enugu State Ministry of Capital Territory Development Authority.
Commissioner for ECTDA, Mr. Iyke Ugwegede, had said the structure was demolished because it was about 2,100 square metres plan erected on two plots of land, with a total area of approximately 2,000 square metres.
Ugwegede explained that the structure was illegal, because its application for approval was rejected in March, 2012, adding that the structure was built on waterways and showed many defects.
However, the Chairman, Publicity Committee of MFM, Pastor Oladele Bank-Olemoh, maintained that the structure was not obstructing the flow of the river and also did not encroach on government land as alleged by the commissioner.
He described the demolition as illegal because of a subsisting High Court order.
Bank-Olemoh argued that several other buildings along the same road, where its regional headquarters was demolished, were still standing.

A member of the House of Representatives from Ogun State, Mr. Abiodun Akinlade, on Wednesday criticised the state government over the ongoing demolition of about 100 houses in some parts of the state.
Akinlade, who is the Chairman, House Committee on Science and Technology, said the demolition was done without human face as many families were displaced.
The lawmaker, a governorship aspirant on the platform of the Labour Party, said what he expected the government to do was to resettle the victims and compensate them before pulling down their houses.
The government had commenced the demolition to open up roads in the state but Akinlade told reporters in Abuja that while he was not against road construction, those affected by the demolition should have been compensated first.
He said, Any government policy that brings peoples shelter down without first making provision for an alternative and also compensating them appropriately in the name of road construction, is by all standard, an anti-people policy.
While it is agreed that the Ojodu/Alagbole/Ijoko Road is long overdue for reconstruction, I think the state government needs to understand that in every democracy, the people come first.

ALSTONVILLE is gearing up for its 125th annual show, which kicks off on Friday, and there are plenty of activities to look forward to.
For the first time in its history, the show will feature the LJ Gray Demolition Derby from 6pm on Saturday night.
Rebecca Lock from the show society said LJ Gray was a local speedway driver who had decided to "take up the challenge" of running the demolition derby.
"He will be driving one of the cars, and his dad, sister and one of his mates will be in the other cars," she said.
"I think this event will be a real crowd pleaser.
"They have gone to a lot of effort with this and it will be fantastic.
"Hopefully we can have a demolition derby every year at the show from now on."
One of the cars that is taking part in the demolition derby will be on display this week at the old Mitre 10 shop in the Alstonville Plaza.
Alstonville Agricultural Society president, Bob Wilson, said preparations for the 125th show were going well, and he said it would be one of the biggest and best.

Its official: the demolition of 56 units at Carver Courts will begin Nov. 13.
The Kinston Housing Authority recently awarded the bid to Central Builders out of Rocky Mount, who will do the job for $382,382.
The demolition is slated to be finished on Feb. 10, to provide more parking and open up more lanes to travel in and out of Carver Courts.
Were giving them 90 days from the start of the contract, KHA Executive director Rhonda Abbott said. There are a lot of things that have to be done, including permits and having asbestos removed. Were not starting until Nov. 13.
Carver Courts, which was originally built in 1952, currently has 28 buildings. Central Builders will remove 10 to provide less congestion to residents.
One resident, Curtis Fields, is in favor of the demolition.
Theyre just trying to make additional parking, Fields said. It should be OK, and it will give more residents decent parking spots.
Abbott said the demolition shouldnt affect traffic much in the area.
The trucks will be coming from the Shine Street side, Abbott said. Bright Street usually sees more traffic, so we decided to have them do demolition on the other side.
Safety is also important, as the buildings will also be roped off and Central Builders will be cautious when it comes to the remaining residents of Carver Courts.
