Footage from one of the protesters as demolition work started

A giant artwork in the centre of Newport is being demolished days after attempts to have it preserved failed.

Campaigners had planned to hold a protest this weekend at the site of the mural, which depicts the 1839 Chartist uprising in the city.

But barely a fortnight after heritage body Cadw declined to list the 1970s mosaic, the diggers have moved in.

Newport council has said moving the mural would cost 600,000 and might not work.

Around 20 people joined a protest after demolition work started at the site of the mural in a city centre subway off John Frost Square on Thursday afternoon.

It followed failed attempts to preserve the 35m (115ft) mosaic, which is being removed as part of a 100m shopping centre development.

Protesters shouted at workers as work started, before barriers were pulled down and some people rushed through.

Ogbomosho demolition - October 4, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

The news of the possible demolition of houses in Ogbomoso and the eventual bulldozing of Alebiosu Villa, my family house at Ojagbo, came to me as a rude shock. It all started when some of my children walked upstairs to tell me my house had been marked for demolition overnight. I got to know the reason for marking in the dead of the night was to avoid a possible attack on them by the people. After, a paper was brought to me to vacate my two-storey building of 24 rooms housing my wives, children, grand-children, great grand-children and some relations within 14 days. At this juncture, the Yoruba saying of Agbara ojo kitted my thought with a series of defence but decided to sheathe the sword. My pain is my age, as a nonagenarian (92), the historical evidence placed on the demolished house as the homestead of the great Toyejes, the 7th and the 11th Aare-Ona-Kakanfo of Yorubaland and the fate of the several thousands of people affected by the demolition. My relocation to where I am now from where I was sacked by the Ajimobi government did not come too softly; the thought, alone, of where to lay my head at my age with my large family became my cross. And till now, my family has been dislocated into five different abodes. The April-fool payment of compensation to victims has made Ajimobis government undemocratic. If Ajimobi could mete out this treatment to the people, where then, is the civilisation he claims to be in possession of?

Demolition-safety bills introduced in Council - October 4, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

PHILADELPHIA The leader of a City Council probe on demolition practices says he expects Council action by the end of the year on a broad legislative package to promote safety at Philadelphia demolition and construction sites.

The proposals, subject to negotiation and change, would establish minimum training requirements for contractors and city building inspectors, require contractors to hire independent site-safety monitors at every construction or demolition site, expand the authority of the Fire Department to shut down dangerous construction jobs, and require demolition contractors to convince the city of their skills and training before they are licensed to work in Philadelphia.

The proposals were spurred by the June 5 accident at 22d and Market Streets where a four-story brick wall, left standing without support at a demolition site, toppled onto a Salvation Army thrift shop next door. Six people inside the shop died and 14 others were injured, including a heavy-equipment operator, who remains in jail for his alleged role in causing the collapse.

Curtis Jones Jr., chairman of a Council committee that held demolition hearings over the summer, said he expected to negotiate details with the Nutter administration and Council members, then schedule hearings and pass legislation by the end of December, in time to address funding needs in next year's budget.

Mayor Nutter issued a statement praising Council's work, citing steps his administration has taken to strengthen regulation of demolitions, and promising to work with Council "to ensure safety at all demolition sites in the city."

Council sources said there was still significant disagreement among Council members on how stringent the regulatory requirements should be.

Concerns include the impact on Philadelphia construction costs, city budget implications, and how it would affect the continuing friction between union and nonunion contractors, frequently accused by the construction trade unions of neglecting safety issues to save money.

The city's Building Industry Association did not return a call Thursday seeking comment.
