The earthquake-damaged Copthorne Hotel in Christchurch, which collapsed at the weekend, has been issued with an urgent demolition notice.
Demolition workers ran for their lives when the 10-storey central city tower collapsed on Saturday afternoon.
The floors pancaked on top of each other, leaving two outside walls standing. Nobody was injured.
Today, the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (Cera) issued its owners with a section 38 notice in order to speed up the removal of the site's remaining structure.
The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) has halted work on the Colombo St site while it investigates Saturday's unexpected collapse.
The owners have up to 10 days to submit a plan to remove the hazard and make the site safe.
MBIE and Cera will work with the site owners and their contractors to review the demolition methodology, a statement said today.
If it is approved by Cera engineers, MBIE will in turn lift its prohibition notice, allowing the demolition work to begin as soon as the owner's contractor is able.

An Iowa County judge has assessed an $80,000 civil penalty against a West Des Moines business and its owner for violating state asbestos disposal laws in the demolition of a Williamsburg truck stop.
Iowa District Court Judge Paul Miller on Monday fined Jai Santoshi Ma Inc. and its owner, Bhupen Patel of West Des Moines, for environmental violations during and after demolition of the former Middle America Truck Stop.
Jai Santoshi Ma owns the property at 120 Hawkeye Dr. in Williamsburg.
According to a petition filed in April 2013 by Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller, Patel andJai Santoshi Ma arranged to demolish the truck stop in May and June of 2012. Before beginning the demolition, the petition claims Patel andJai Santoshi Ma failed to inspect for asbestos and notify the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
On May 25, 2012, a DNR field office received a telephone complaint alleging Patel began demolishing a building without conducting an asbestos inspection and was planning to bury the waste on site. On May 30, Jim Kacer, a DNR environmental specialist, investigated the complaint and met with Ken Odom, the contractor hired by Patel to demolish the building.
Kacer told Odom that the demolition waste may contain asbestos and could not be buried at that location. Odom was told to stop the demolition until an asbestos inspection was conducted and the results were sent to DNR.
On May 31, Kacer called Patel and told him that the demolition needed to stop until the asbestos inspection was completed and a report made to DNR. Patel also was told that the demolition waste could not be buried on the site.
Patel told Kacer that he did not intend to bury the waste on site. He also told Kacer that he had contacted an environmental consultant, Gaylen Hiesterman of Waterloo, an operations manager with ATC Associates of New York, for assistance with the demolition.
On June 1, 2012, DNR issued a notice of violation to Patel ordering a halt to the demolition until the building and debris were checked for asbestos. Patel was ordered to notify the DNR if asbestos was found and to dispose of it properly by alerting the Iowa County Landfill that the debris contained asbestos.
On June 4, 2012, John Avery, Williamsburg public works director, called the DNR to report the above ground portion of the former truck stop had been demolished over the previous weekend. On June 12, 2012, Hiesterman told DNR representatives that some of the demolition debris had been taken off site for disposal and some had been buried on site.

It appears after five years of empty promises, the developer of Medley Centre in Irondequoit is finally going to begin work on the nearly empty shopping mall.
Scott Congel secured demolition permits last week to raze three buildings on properties he owns near the former Irondequoit Mall. The demolition is set to begin Thursday that will level three buildings on the East Ridge Road side of the shopping mall.
The three buildings set to be demolished are in poor condition after sitting vacant for years. They include a former insurance agency at 1665 East Ridge Road along with a former auto dealership and an abandoned home.
The demolition marks the first major milestone in Medley Centre's redevelopment.
"He has to really clean up the property. It has to be ready for anything that's done with this project and of course, I'm pretty stubborn in sticking to him. My primary goal is yes, we want to see this project move but meanwhile I have to protect our residents and our taxpayers that Irondequoit is a viable community for development and for business and aesthetically beautiful," said Town Supervisor Mary Joyce D'Aurizio, R-Irondequoit.
Business owners in that area say they've suffered the past number of months while East Ridge Road underwent extensive repairs. That project is about to wrap up.
The next step in improving the neighborhood is removing the dilapidated buildings. Applebee's sits between the properties slated to come down.
In a statement, the restaurant chain said:
D'Aurizio says the auto dealership building will stay for now as Congel wants to use it as a construction office and garage for construction vehicles.
His plan is to convert Medley Centre into a mixed-use facility that includes retail and residential. The Rochester Broadway Theatre League has also proposed putting a new performing arts center there.

Mayor Ross Humber points to a string of houses as he drives up to a fenced-off portion of the old Route 430 highway. Theres a lot of this town that should never have been dead.
In moments, old family homes in Daniels Harbour became piles of rubble with several swipes by the arm of an excavator. Demolition of homes located in a cordoned-off area began early onSept. 26. Photo by Jeff Elliott/The Northern Pen
Fluorescent pink Xs mark the fate of more than a dozen properties that trace the Daniels Harbour coastline.
Soon, the excavator starts its work and demolition begins early in the morning on Sept. 26.
One after the other, family homes are turned into piles of rubble.
The community of nearly 260 was plagued by a series of landslides in the past few years. In October 2006, a state of emergency was declared when the earth gave way, displacing four houses and one business as masses of soil descended into the Atlantic swell below.
In April 2007, 120,000 cubic metres of earth toppled into the sea by a landslide three times more powerful than the first which hit just months prior, causing a bungalow to careen over the chewed-away cliff, splashing into the Gulf of
St. Lawrence. Many nearby homeowners were forced to flee their houses, which were left on the embankment edge, thought to be too dangerous to occupy.
The 30-metre escarpment also devoured a portion of Route 430, which once cut through town, leaving most of the communities on the Northern Peninsula temporarily cut off from the rest of the province. Engineers eventually made a new route that completely bypassed the town.
The last landslide occurred in June 2008, but it didnt endanger any homes.
