Demolition of the Applebee's in Boulder begins Tuesday, making way for a Trader Joe's store. (Mark Leffingwell, Daily Camera)
Efforts to open a Trader Joe's grocery store in Boulder have taken a step forward Tuesday. Work has commenced to demolish the former Applebee's restaurant, 1906 28th St., at the Twenty Ninth Street mall.
Once the brick building is razed, construction will start on the 14,000-square-foot Trader Joe's, which is expected to open in 2013 and possibly by late fall, mall officials said.
"This is a big project, and there's a lot of work and a lot of moving pieces that go into it," said J.T. Fulton, Twenty Ninth Street's property manager. "Obviously, we'd like the store to be up in a day. It's not a reality."
Whether the Boulder store will be the first Trader Joe's in Colorado remains unclear. A second Trader Joe's is under construction off Colorado Boulevard and East Eighth Avenue in Denver.
Officials for Trader Joe's say that Denver location which will house the chain's sole liquor store in Colorado has a tentative opening for the fourth quarter of 2013. Colorado law allows grocery stores and chains only one liquor license to sell full-strength beer, wine and spirits.

BRADENTON -- City Council discussed Wares Creek demolition and redevelopment plans at a Wednesday morning workshop.
City Clerk Carl Callahan suggested setting aside $100,000 in seed money to pay for demolishing properties that are a public safety hazard.
Councilman Gene Brown suggested banks should deal with the delinquent properties.
"The bank has money to take care of it," said Brown.
He wanted to make sure Bradenton taxpayers were not footing the bill.
Callahan said the bank probably will not maintain the property, but the city still has options.
"You can hold them responsible, but you can't make them do anything," said Callahan.
He suggested notifyinge property owners about the need to maintain property safely, and if notices are ignored, placing a lien on the property, which could lead to demolitions.
"If the property is an imminent threat to neighborhood, then we take it down," said Callahan.
Councilman Harold Byrd Jr. said a nuisance property ordinance should be devel

GENEVA The demolition of the former Coultrap Elementary School, 1113 Peyton St., Geneva, is scheduled to begin Monday. Officials said the first days of work will focus on getting the building ready to be taken down.
Chris Lumpp, engineer at Alpine Demolition Services in Batavia, said the first couple of weeks of demolition work will involve shutting off all utilities to the building, taking out light bulbs for recycling and other work inside the building.
Scott Ney, director of facility operations for Geneva School District 304, said the actual physical demolition will not involve a wrecking ball or explosions, but rather a systematic removal.
A giant claw machine will take chunks of the building away, Ney said. There will be no vibration. Lumpp said the giant claws are attachments to excavators ... that are chomping and pulling on the concrete and steel.
As the building is taken down in chunks and bites, materials will be separated out and taken away, Lumpp said, with a finish date scheduled for Aug. 2.
Ney said the demolition is to be completed before the start of the 2013-14 school year.
Coultrap was built in 1923. Despite an outcry from the public to preserve Coultrap, the District 304 school board approved razing the school in January because it would have cost more to repair than to tear down.
The former school was Genevas first high school.
It then became the junior high and then was renovated to be an elementary school. Coultrap was closed as an attendance center in 2009 because its students went to the new Williamsburg Elementary School.
Until recently, school board meetings were held in Coultraps cafetorium.
