Fort Lauderdale approves demolition of historic building - May 10, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

    FORT LAUDERDALE

A cut-in-half, falling-apart Sailboat Bend historic home has avoided the wrecking ball for almost five years despite being labeled an unsafe structure.

Commissioners cleared the way for its demolition this week, saying sometimes history is too far gone to be saved.

The Weidling House, a 1939 art moderne concrete structure at 716 SW Fourth Place along the New River, has been up on blocks since 2005. A failed restoration project has left it an historic eyesore for neighbors.

The city's Unsafe Structures Board issued a demolition order for the building in 2008, but the city's Historic Preservation Board that year refused to give its required permission for the destruction.

Since then, the building has sat in limbo as the property was part of bankruptcy proceedings. The property's new owner, Edward Strobel, told commissioners it would be cost-prohibitive to restore the building.

The commission agreed and overturned the preservation board's previous decision.

"The house is falling apart. There's no one there to save it," Commissioner Dean Trantalis said. "Circumstances have kind of moved our hand here."

The home originally was owned by C.P. Weidling, co-founder of the city's first law firm and publisher of the Fort Lauderdale Herald, a predecessor of the Sun Sentinel. Its style is also known as Art Deco. Its curved lines are in a nautical style, which historians said was meant to suggest a ship or ocean liner.

Neighbors say the building has been crumbling before their eyes.

WATERVLIET Demolition crews will be back this morning to continue their work at St. Patricks church.

After days of preparation, three cranes pulled on the attached cables for several minutes Thursday to take down the top portion of the former St. Patricks churchs bell tower to no avail. One of the cables snapped and the tower remains standing, barely budging during the attempt.

Demolition starts at old Indianapolis airport terminal - May 10, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Officials say work has started on the upcoming demolition of the Indianapolis International Airport's old passenger terminal.

Airport officials said Thursday that the current work involves waste removal and exterior preparation that's needed before substantial demolition of the terminal can begin. The terminal's four concourses and other structures built between 1954 and 1987 are all expected to be cleared by year's end.

Indianapolis Airport Authority director Robert Duncan says the demolition will make the site along Interstate 465 more marketable to developers.

The old terminal buildings have gone unused since the airport's new $1.1 billion passenger terminal opened in 2008.

IBJ reported in March that the bids for the demolition came in much lower than expected. Veit USA of Rogers, Minn., was the low bidder for the main demolition contract, with a bid of about $4 million.

The Indianapolis Airport Authority had budgeted $11.3 million, but the total project cost, including a 17-percent contingency for unforeseen problems, would be $5.7 million,

Demolition work to damaged sections of Route 322 could begin later this morning - May 10, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

SUSQUEHANNA TOWNSHIP - Demolition work could begin later this morning on the sections of roadway and bridge overpasses damaged in Thursday morning's tanker fire near the intersection of Route 322 and Interstate 81.

Greg Penny, spokesman for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, said the contractor designing the demolition plan is expected to meet with department officials this morning.

If the plan is acceptable to PennDOT engineers, the actual demolition work would begin later this morning, Penny said.

The searing heat of the first diesel fuel explosion not only warped metal guardrails, but also incinerated portions of 22/322's deck basically, by converting liquid in the cement to steam, prompting smaller subsequent explosions and severely weakened its metal substructure, PennDOT officials said.

Workers started dismantling the portion of 22/322 that passes over I-81 on Thursday evening.

Deconstructing and rebuilding that portion of 22/322 will take at least two or three months. And during that time, some of the 19,000 vehicles estimated to traverse the expanse each day will have to be diverted elsewhere.

WALTON One year after arson charges were dropped, the Durr familys large, blue, fire-ravaged house still stands empty and discarded.

A fire tore through the home at 202 N. Davis St. in Walton in September 2011 and the house has remained largely untouched since the blaze. While town officials and Benjimin and Wendy Durr hope for its demolition, the Durrs are caught up in a federal court case against their insurance company to get enough money to take down the house.

The Durrs were arrested in January 2012 in connection with the fire. Though they were initially charged with arson Benjimin Durr was charged with Class C felony arson and Wendy Durr was charged with conspiracy to commit arson, a Class C felony the charges were dropped in May 2012, when they could not be substantiated.

When the charges were dropped, Cass County Prosecutor Kevin Enyeart said he no longer believed the Durrs had set the fire and that there had been holes in the investigations.

Now, the Durrs are involved in a federal court case against their insurance company, United Services Automobile Association Casualty Insurance Co., in order to get money to tear down the home, according to Mark Fryman, an attorney for the Durrs.

We allege that we had a policy in place, and we had a loss, and that they owe money to us for the insurance policy, Fryman said. So far they have not paid and denied coverage.

Fryman said he believed the insurance company is arguing that the Durrs had either caused damage or had the damage caused to their home.

Roger Wilbermuth, a spokesman for USAA, read a written statement from the company, saying the claim was not covered in the policy.

USAA works hard to handle claims quickly and fairly, but we must also carefully investigate claims, Wilbermuth said. Sometimes we have to deny claims when they are not covered.

Right now, the court case is still in its discovery phase, Fryman said. He said theyve conducted more investigations on the home, which already had investigations by the state fire marshal and the insurance company right after the fire.
