Contractors feed thick cables through the top 30 feet of the bell tower of the former St. Patricks Church in Watervliet Wednesday in preparation for its demolition later today. (Mike McMahon / The Record)
WATERVLIET The final demolition plans for the St. Patricks bell tower were delayed one more time on Wednesday as crews continued to prepare the site for the towers removal today.
Police Chief Ron Boisvert said there were several factors that the demolition crew, the developers and the city were taking into consideration as the project moved forward, including the expected weight of the top 30 feet of the tower and that a dry underground riverbed lies underneath the site.
After bringing a crane to the site around midday when demolition was expected to occur on Wednesday crews tied cables to the sides of the 137-foot bell tower. The cables are expected to be used today to bring the top of the tower down safely. The bottom of the tower will then be razed as the rest of the edifices have been for the past month. Demolition started in early April with the boiler house followed with the beginning of the churchs demolition in the middle of the month.
The church had been closed since September 2011. Plans were announced for the site last spring by Albany developer Nigro Companies.
The 3.5 acre property will eventually house a state of the art Price Chopper supermarket which will replace the stores current location in a nearby strip mall.
Officials at the site Wednesday said they expected demolition to continue this morning.

Crab apple trees in bloom frame the former St. Patricks Church bell tower in Watervliet Tuesday. (Mike McMahon / The Record)
WATERVLIET Demolition of the bell tower at St. Patricks should begin around midday today, according to Steve Powers, with developer Nigro Companies.
Crews were supposed to start taking down the 137-foot structure Tuesday, but the crane brought in to attach safety cables to the top of the tower proved not tall enough and another had to be found.
Demolition of the bell tower should be complete by weeks end. Next, Powers said, the former rectory will be taken down. There is asbestos abatement currently taking place at the old school and demolition of that building should be complete by the week after next, Powers said.
The former 3.5-acre Roman Catholic complex is coming down to prepare the site for a Price Chopper supermarket and two commercial buildings.
Despite opposition by many, including the Citizens for St. Patricks, a grass roots group of activists who brought litigation to a number of courts in an effort to save the historic church, demolition commenced in full force in mid-April. There was talk of incorporating the bell tower into the Price Chopper design, but it was later deemed not feasible by the developers engineers.
While Fifth Avenue has remained closed to traffic but has offered spectators the best view of the demolition 19th Street has remained open throughout and is expected to remain open while the bell tower is razed.

MIDLAND A public hearing was held Monday at the Midland Town Hall primarily to review an application for the demolition of the old Midland School building, which the town proposed to submit to the state by a May 31 deadline.
At the end of the town meeting, a unanimous decision was made to try to obtain funding from the Maryland Community Development Block Grant Program and begin the demolition of the old school.
The old Midland School, located at 15010 Paradise St., was constructed in two separate parts beginning in 1899. The addition was completed in 1923. The school has been closed since the mid 1970s.
The building was originally comprised of a two-story, five-bay wide, brick structure and was built during a time when nearly half of the countys schools were log structures.
James Thrasher, a coal stripper who lived in Midland, leased the old Midland School from the county in 1975 and opened a carriage museum to showcase his collection to the community.
The museum remained in the old school building until Thrasher died in 1987. It was reopened at the Depot Center in Frostburg in 1991.
Current Midland Mayor Richard Blair said that after the museum closed, the town used the auditorium of the school as a utility building until a new utility building was constructed.
The school, then completely empty, started to rapidly deteriorate, Blair said, and an asset really turned into a liability.
Former mayor and current Town Administrator Craig Alexander said the school was one of the centers of the community during its time in operation and that he has many fond memories of the students and teachers during his time at the school in the 1960s.
But Alexander and the community of Midland agreed that it was time to take action and begin the demolition of his old elementary school.
