In the race to beat the season and get a crop of something ready to hit the ground running, savvy gardeners are thinking of -- if not already -- starting their seeds. Being able to get a leg up in the short growing season by starting seeds now is important.

Starting from seed is one of the most economical methods to gardening and the best way to get those new and unique varieties.

Starting seeds early enables local gardeners to grow varieties that might otherwise take too long to come into production for food or flowers if they were simply planted in the ground as seeds when the soil and nighttime temperatures were perfect. We know all seeds are not equal, they dont even all look alike, and they certainly do not germinate the same.

Soil temperature is key, and a quick check of any seed package gives the optimum temperature for starting that particular seed. When starting seeds indoors, in most cases your indoor temperatures will be sufficient to warm soil temperatures for germination. But there are varieties, like some watermelons for example, that prefer a soil temperature of 85 degrees.

To achieve a warm or warmer soil there are a few options. An electric seed-starting mat or heating can quickly raise the temperature in a flat. Or put the flat on top of a refrigerator. Remove flats to a sunny windowsill once the seeds have sprouted.

A good commercial seed starting mix is recommended to get the seeds off to a good start and avoid disease issues once they sprout.

Even though the daylight is getting longer each day, just keeping seedling flats on windowsills will not provide enough light. Light or the lack of it, is a challenge.

Seeds will need at least 16 hours of light each day, so plan on adding a light source for success. This can be a special grow light or a two-bulb shop-type light fitted with a warm and cool fluorescent tube bulb.

Many seeds, like those of beans, corn, gourds, squash, and nasturtiums and peas or sweet peas for example, benefit from soaking in tepid water anywhere from four to six hours to overnight before planting, depending on the thickness and hardness of the outer surface. Drain well before planting.

Try this technique with the new All-America Selections winner Blue Prince pumpkin which has vigorous trailing vines and produces nine to 10 blue, flattened pumpkins with deep-orange flesh and savory sweetness. Or get in a quick crop of Snak Hero, a new and improved snap pea All-America Selections winner for 2020.

Small seeds can be spread on a moistened paper towel and slipped into a plastic bag for this purpose. If you are soaking a number of seed varieties, place dish or sealed plastic bag on top of our next to that variety. In-ground planting of seeds can also employ the overnight soak method to speed germination.

This technique works well with Asian Delight pak choi which is compact, upright plant with tender and succulent stems, another All-America Selections winner for 2020. Or try the new a new tomato, a patio-type grape tomato with a bushy habit that is well-suited to container growing. This Selections winner produces uniform oblong sweet fruits.

Once seedlings develop their first true leaves they can be gently separated from flats and put into sixpacks or small pots to let them grown and develop healthy root systems. Depending on variety. Plant seedlings outdoors when soil warms to about 65 degrees and night-time temperatures are well above freezing. Beans, for example, will not set blooms until night-time temperatures are 60 degrees or above.

When planting outdoors, note that soil temperatures for most seeds will need to be 65 degrees or higher. To cheat this requirement, consider a raised bed in which the soil should warm up sooner than that on the ground. Container gardens can be warmed up indoors for a few days before planting.

Or for in-ground planting, cover the soil with a sheet of clear plastic a week before you plant to sow the seeds. If the weather remains clear and sunny, it should allow the sun to warm it up.

It is one small investment that will pay off in the long run and that sheet of plastic can be saved and then used many years.

Light-vehicle Interior Applications Sensors Market To 2026: Growth Analysis By Manufacturers, Regions, Types And Applications - Monroe Scoop

The man who police said fatally stabbed a 23-year-old man outside Richards Bar has been charged with second-degree murder, according to a spokesperson for the Cook County states attorneys office. Thomas Tansey is scheduled to appear in bond court on Thursday after police took him into custody on Wednesday, which is all after they released him three days after the February 21 slaying in River West.

On that Friday night, 30-year-old Tansey allegedly stabbed Kenny Paterimos multiple times with a box cutter outside the bar after using a homophobic slur. Paterimos, a barista, was bisexual. Paterimos and Tansey had a confrontation inside the bar, which led to Tanseys ejection from Richards, police said. Paterimos would leave his brothers side for a cigarette. When he left the bar, police said Tansey attacked him. Police said Paterimos came back inside the dive bar after he was wounded. His brother would rush outside to apprehend Tansey, pinning him until police arrived.

Charges werent filed until Wednesday as police had released Tansey after he claimed he killed Paterimos in self defense. Police continued to investigate as Tansey remained free. Police then issued a murder warrant on Sunday for Tanseys arrest.

Meanwhile, Paterimoss family and friends plus supporters gathered Tuesday night outside of Richards Bar to protest. Sporting T-shirts and holding up signs, they expressed anger that Tansey was released and felt Richards Bars employees and customers were not cooperating with police to apprehend Tansey.

Paterimoss mother, Diona Bueno, addressed the crowd of under 100 on Tuesday night. In an emotional batch of comments, Bueno stood in front of Richards Bars main door. She called for Mayor Lori Lightfoot to shut the bar down.

He was not a nice man, and I tried, God knows I tried to forgive him, Bueno said of Tansey, an ex-Marine. I believe in all my military men, I believe in my city, I believed in the police and they havent done a hot-damn frickin thing.

Bueno made those comments as a police office slipped in behind her inside the bar, trying to keep peace between protesters and bar workers. Bar staff would lock their doors and prevent Bueno and other protesters from entering. Bueno repeatedly pounded on the door, asking for admittance so she could pray and say farewell to her son.

Many of the protesters believe Richards Bar didnt do enough to bring Tansey into custody, claiming they had a disregard of law. They cited how the bar ignores city law which bars indoor smoking in public places as customers are free to light up during most days. But on Tuesday, the bar was on its best behavior. With police swarming the area, there was no indoor smoking on Tuesday night. Richards Bar, near the Grand, Milwaukee, and Halsted intersection, is a popular destination after most bars close at 2 a.m.

Tansey is scheduled for a bond hearing at noon at 26th Street and California Avenue, according to the states attorneys office.

Hyundai has a new electric concept car called the Prophecy, which, as its name suggests, offers a sneak peek at what the brand's future EVs may look like.

If the car is anything to go by, the future looks pretty darn good.

Hyundai debuted the concept on Tuesday, showing it off with a video presentation after the Geneva International Motor Show was canceled amid coronavirus concerns. It's electric and autonomous, but like most concept cars, it's just an exaggerated idea of what the future will look like not a solidified production model.

But with its looks echoing part Tesla Model 3 and part Porsche 911, the Prophecy sports a sleek, fastback shape, pixelated headlights, and a clear-acrylic spoiler out back.Hyundai might have gone a bit far with the language in its press release describing the Prophecy as "sensuous," "voluptuous," and fostering "an emotional connection between humans and automobiles" but the Prophecy is, at least, stunning.

The car's interior may prove a bit more controversial than the exterior, however, since Hyundai has done away with a steering wheel in favor of a pair of joysticks. Hyundai said in using the joysticks, the driver can "control the vehicle from a position of comfort," while autonomous technology pilots the car.

Do you want it? Sohui Kim, the chef and an owner of the Brooklyn restaurants the Good Fork and Insa, asked a visitor. You can have it.

That made it official: Gage & Tollner, one of the most storied restaurants in New York food history, is finally reopening on March 15. Workers hoisted a new Gage & Tollner sign into place, marking the end of a string of businesses, including an Arbys franchise, that opened in this Brooklyn space on Fulton Street after the dining institution closed in 2004.

In the restaurants newly modernized kitchen, Ms. Kim and the chef de cuisine, Adam Shepard, considered whether some newly arrived cuts of meat were Gage-worthy. Upstairs, in private halls recently christened the Edna Lewis Room and the Dewey Room, after a former Gage chef and a former owner, applicants waited in hopes of landing a position.

Finding the right staff and writing the right menu have been consuming concerns for Ms. Kim and her partners Ben Schneider Ms. Kims husband and co-owner of the Good Fork and Insa and St. John Frizell, the owner of the Red Hook, Brooklyn, bar Fort Defiance.

Right now, were getting a lot of feedback from the Gage & Tollner superfans, Mr. Frizell said. But really thats going to be less than 5 percent of our audience, so were going to have to play to a bigger crowd.

They want to honor the resurrected restaurants past as a destination for seafood and meat, while simultaneously appealing to contemporary tastes and expectations. When people talk about the culinary memories, Ms. Kim said, they talk about the space, how they felt, the lights, the majesty of being in the room. Then you ask them what they had for dinner, and they dont remember.

Gage & Tollner, named for the restaurateurs Charles Gage and Eugene Tollner, opened in 1879, and moved to its present location in 1892. As Brooklyns answer to Delmonicos, the restaurant was an elegantly appointed dining temple that served seafood, chops and steaks, and it attracted celebrities like Mae West, Lillian Russell, Jimmy Durante and members of the Brooklyn Dodgers. The handful of owners who succeeded the originals were careful to preserve its Victorian atmosphere, though that became less of a choice than an obligation when the interior was declared a landmark in 1975.

Despite some cosmetic changes, the new interior wont look too different. As stewards of dining history, the current owners had to approve every change and fix with the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission, including repair work on the original wooden revolving door; the laying of new floors (stained red oak downstairs, white oak upstairs); the replacement of the upholstered wall panels; the repair of the crumbling portico; and the polishing of the many brass chandeliers (a three-week process), which once dispensed both gas and electrical light. All told, restoration, infrastructure and equipment costs have totaled roughly $2 million.

The food, too, will be a mix of the familiar and the innovative. There will be no second act for crab meat Virginia, a staple that wasnt much more than crab and butter. But diners will get a soft-shell clam belly broil made with Ipswich clams, a popular menu item in its day.

Ms. Kim also wanted to serve a true mutton chop the meat comes from Thistle Creek Farms in Pennsylvania. I want it to be mutton, she said. I think there are some restaurants who are serving lamb wink, wink. We wont serve lamb and call it mutton.

There will also be crab cakes, a shrimp cocktail, housemade Parker House rolls, shrimp scampi with gnudi, four different cuts of steak and a raw bar. Ms. Kim plans to keep it simple: Its all about getting amazing ingredients, she said.

Other dishes will be completely new. Instead of a chicken potpie, Mr. Shepard has fashioned a pork potpie with a light pte brise dough and a lighter gravy. Mr. Shepard is not your average chef de cuisine. His long rsum includes Lunetta, Union Pacific and Tavern on the Green. When he read about the Gage project, he reached out to Ms. Kim.

The upstairs bar, called the Sunken Harbor Club, will serve nine cocktails that Mr. Frizell called pre-tiki classics, like the Singapore Sling and the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club. The bar was designed by Mr. Frizell and Mr. Schneider, and built by Mr. Schneider; its angled wooden ceiling and walls look like the galley of a ship.

All of the 25 cocktails on the downstairs opening menu are drawn from the original Gage cocktail list, with the exception of a Negroni, an agave drink (tequila and mezcal not being popular drinks during Gages heyday) and a dirty martini.

That martini will be served not in the currently fashionable coupe, but in a traditional martini glass. I like the straight-sided glass, Mr. Frizell said. Bring em back!

Down below the yacht provides a sophisticated dining and galley area, two cabins and a single bathroomall with windows for natural lightto accommodate four guests.

Hey all!

I just ordered a new Model S, midnight silver metallic with black and white interior. Although this is my dream combo, I was hesitant to get the white interior because I thought it would be too hard to maintain and keep clean. I thought I had 5-7 weeks for delivery and some time to think about the white interior. But as luck would have it, my Tesla rep found a new car that matches exactly what I ordered, and it's available for pick any time. So now I really have to decide!

What's your experience with the white interior? Is it worth having, even if you have to be careful not to get it dirty every time you get in the car, especially when you have other people riding with you? Do you have to constantly have handy-wipes available for easy clean up? My friends are saying it'll get dirty too fast and I will always be on edge about getting it dirty.

I love the combination of the silver metallic and the white interior. Should I just suck it up and pick up my new dream car? Or re-order with the cream interior, which I could live with but am not too excited about.

Animals who find themselves in the care of the county will soon have a new temporary home, as Animal Care and Enforcement personnel follow up on punch list inspections over the next month.

The finish line is finally in sight, said Gaston County Assistant Public Works Director Dan Ziehm.

All animal services in Gaston County go through Animal Care and Enforcement, currently based in a 64-year-old building at Dallas Park. There, dogs are kept in an enclosed space without climate control and exposed to varying temperatures.

Conversation over a new and improved shelter began about 12 years ago, around the time Ziehm began working for the county.

This is one of the reasons I got into construction, he said. I can see a project go from whats in our minds and on paper to were walking through it, and its an amazing feeling.

Ziehm expects Gaston County Animal Care and Enforcement will begin transitioning to the 21,650 square-feet facility located on Business Park Court in Gastonia near the Interstate 85 and U.S. 321 junction in March.

Once we do those inspections and the general contractor corrects any deficiencies that are noted, and the general contractor obtains the certificate of occupancy from the city of Gastonia, we will be able to occupy the facility, Ziehm said.

The county will phase the current shelter out by accepting new animals at the new facility and adopting out the animals at the current shelter, rather than moving all the animals, according to Ziehm.

Animal Care and Enforcements new shelter will feature indoor and climate-controlled cat and dog adoption malls, two cat play rooms, two get acquainted rooms for adoptable dogs, and four large and fenced-in outdoor interaction spaces. Employees will have access to rooms in the back where animals are cleaned and observed upon arrival, and held before theyre adoptable or for quarantine purposes.

Capt. J. Reid Rollins commands the animal enforcement side of Gaston County Police Department, which includes animal-related laws, investigating animal cruelty and neglect cases and reporting animal bites.

Licensed veterinarian Dr. Kristine Blankenship oversees receiving, housing and caring for animals at the shelter brought in by officers or surrendered by Gaston County residents.

A large part of the shelters operations are devoted to receiving animals, caring for them and preparing them for adoption. Luckily, Rollins said animal capacity is no longer a pressing issue because more animals are being adopted than previous years, meaning less animals die of euthanasia.

Our current euthanasia rate of animals that we bring in, this [past] year, is at 9.5 percent, Rollins said. That is considerably down from what it was many, many years ago.

Gaston County reported of the 5,056 cats and 4,930 dogs taken into the shelter in 2001, 4,644 cats and 4,196 dogs were euthanized. Only 21 cats and 127 dogs were adopted, according to the North Carolina Department of Agriculture.

In 2018, out of the 1,809 dogs and 1,648 cats that were taken into the Gaston shelter, 1,155 dogs and 1,289 cats were adopted. Only 318 dogs and 262 cats were euthanized.
