Indoor Gardening – My Aerogarden and Houseplant Blog … - February 24, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

I have to admit, one of the things I find most annoying about the Aerogarden is that the grow bulbs seem to blow out on a regular basis, and worse, the only way to get replacements is to go to Aerogarden's store.

Here's the problem--just one of these light bulbs easily cost upwards of $10-13. It's a clever way for Aerogarden to get themselves a regular source of revenue, sort of like the way Gillette never made money on its razors but on the razor blades. But for someone like me who wanted to get into indoor gardening partially to save money, it really doesn't make sense for me to be raving about how I save money by not buying fresh herbs, but end up paying triple the amount I would have paid in electricity and replacement bulbs.

Now for years I've been fastidiously buying from the Aerogarden Store, but when one of my grow lights decided to fail lately, I decided to bite the bullet and try one of these adapters I've been seeing on eBay. They look like this:

Here's how it works. You take a regular CFL or LED light bulb, the same kind you use around the house, and screw it into the adapter.

Then, you plug the adapter right into the Aerogarden. Note that certain light bulbs are going to be too big to fit, but the ones I happened to have lying around fit perfectly.

For your reference, Aerogarden replacement lights typically produce 1450 lumens of light and use 26 watts, so you'll want your CFL or LED bulb to output about the same.

One thing to keep in mind is that depending on what model of Aerogarden you have, you'll need to choose between two types of light bulb sockets.

Most Aerogardens that have three lights except for the Ultra, including the original Aerogarden Extra (not the "Miracle Gro" branded Aerogarden Extra), Aerogarden Extra Elite, VeggiePro, Elite+, Pro200, Deluxe, and Deluxe Upgrade Kit) use a light bulb that has more of a flat end, with two metal prongs coming out of it parallel to the shape of the light (model #100633).

Now obviously this isn't sanctioned by Aerogarden, so chances are if you have a warranty on your product using one of these would probably invalidate it if they were to find out. On the other hand, if you're like me and have already sent hundreds of dollars of your hard-earned money to them, these little adapters are a great way to keep your gardens running.

Dimmable LED Luminaires integrate sensor control system. - February 24, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. Power management company Eaton announces that its Metalux Encounter and SkyRidge light-emitting diode (LED) luminaire families are now available with an optional integrated sensor control system, optimized to meet energy codes for occupancy sensing and daylight harvesting. The system is one of the most cost-effective solutions, saving installation time and money in enclosed smaller ambient spaces.

The luminaire-integrated sensor control system reduces the design time and complexity of meeting energy codes for both lighting and controls, said Mark Eubanks, president, Eatons Cooper Lighting Division. The sensor system is designed to guarantee occupancy and daylight harvesting coverage from within the footprint of Metalux ambient luminaires, so the lighting design is the control design. The system achieves the lowest installed cost in small spaces compared to traditional control products.

Designed to meet todays energy code demands, the Metalux Encounter and SkyRidge luminaires with the integrated sensor system are ideal for new construction or retrofits in enclosed rooms with one to six luminaires, where both occupancy detection and daylight harvesting control are required. The innovative control system is factory-wired to the luminaires, switching on or off based on occupancy and dimming the light when enough daylight is available.

When compared to the cost of furnishing and installing traditional occupancy and daylight sensors, in addition to the cost of the luminaire, installing the Metalux integrated-sensor fixtures require only a single product to mount and a single electrical connection to make no additional wiring or special installation requirements saving customers time and money on the total installation cost.

The sensor system offers out-of-the-box operation using thoughtful default settings, but when the application demands more, the sensor system has the option to make changes to one or more fixtures using a remote control. The remote allows changes to the default settings for occupancy, target light level, preset lighting levels and more.

High-voltage resonant controller with PFC for LED drivers - February 21, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Feb 20, 2015 The new high-voltage resonant controller ICL5101 provides a high level of integration which translates to a reduction in system cost.

With the ICL5101, Infineon Technologies AG extends its portfolio of lighting control ICs, addressing lighting systems in the range of 40W to 300W. The new high-voltage resonant controller IC provides a high level of integration which translates to a reduction in system cost. Typical applications which benefit from these features include indoor and outdoor LED lighting, high-bay and low-bay lighting, street lighting, parking garage and canopy lighting, office lighting, retail and shop lighting. Since the total cost of ownership is an important aspect for industrial lighting, customers prefer to use resonant topologies supported by the new ICL5101 due to its high efficiency up to 95%.

The highly integrated ICL5101 allows for advanced LED driver designs with approximately 25% less components compared to similar solutions which require separate PFC and resonant ICs. This leads to smaller form factors with more reliable designs, less complex PCB layouts and reduced costs. The ICL5101 integrates the half-bridge and the PFC gate drivers. All operation parameters of the IC are adjustable by simple resistors, enabling cost effective but reliable and stable parameter-settings.The chip supports outdoor use by an extended junction temperature ranging from -40C to +125C.

The LED controller ICL5101 is designed to control resonant converter topologies such as LLC. The integrated digital PFC stage operates both in critical conduction mode (CrCM) and discontinuous conduction mode (DCM), which allows an extremely stable regulation in low load conditions, occurring for e.g. when the device is dimmed. The LED lighting can be dimmed down over an extremely wide range from 100% to 0.1% of its nominal load. State of the art dimming today typically ranges from 100% to 5%. In addition, the ICL5101 enables an ultra-fast time to light under any conditions with less than 200ms.

The adjustable PFC stage of the ICL5101 delivers high power quality, providing a low total harmonic distortion (THD) of less than 10% and a high power factor of more than 0.99 over wide line input voltage range. This enables lighting manufacturers to comply with energy efficiency standards. Furthermore the output of the ICL5101 is extremely stable over line voltage variations. A comprehensive set of protection features including external over temperature protection and capacitive load protection ensure the detection of fault conditions and increase system safety.

With the introduction of ICL5101 Infineon once again demonstrates its technology leadership for highly efficient driver solutions. Just recently, the ILD6150 step-down driver IC was nominated as finalists in the product category "ICs and electronic components" for the 2015 LEDs Magazine Sapphire Awards . Infineon will showcase the new ICL5101 at the tradeshow Strategies in Light (booth #1426) from February 24 to 26, 2015, in Las Vegas.

Future Energy Solutions expects to double employment - February 13, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

A Fort Lauderdale company is growing fast nationally and overseas with an unusual approach to energy-saving lighting systems for parking lots and warehouses.

Future Energy Solutions offers customers upgrades to more energy-efficient lights with no upfront investment and long-term contracts.

Last year, to handle growing business, the firm tripled the size of its headquarters and hired more than 40 people across the United States and in London. This year, it plans to double employment to top 150 people worldwide, CEO Daniel Gold said.

That includes jobs at a new office in Australia that serves as its Asia-Pacific headquarters.

Begun in 2009 as a fixture-maker, the firm's unique concept developed from "failure, not success," Gold said.

He had watched his father-in-law pitch energy-efficient lighting to businesses and get few takers. Many executives said they loved the idea of slashing their company's electric bills but didn't want to invest money upfront and wondered what lights would be best anyway.

So Gold came up with this: His company basically lends the customer a new lighting system for 15 years at no upfront cost. It designs, installs, owns and operates the system. And the customer agrees to pay an annual fee for 15 years, with that cash coming out of their energy savings.

Savings often run 50 percent to 75 percent on electricity bills and on system maintenance, he said.

Gas stations, shopping malls, schools and hospitals are among the takers. And Gold now strives to work with operators with multiple locales, so that his company can grow together with its customers.

The Florida Automobile Dealers Association has seen such good results in parking lots for some members that it recently gave an endorsement to Gold's Future Energy Solutions, its only endorsement in the lighting industry and one of only a handful for all businesses, president Ted Smith said.

Lighting Retrofit Provides Safety & Savings for YMCA Swimmers - February 12, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Boise, ID (PRWEB) February 11, 2015

The YMCA of Boise, ID, has recently upgraded the lighting system in their Aquatics Center. Aquatics Director Mike Kapuscinski discussed the importance of the enhancement for his facility with Global Energy & Lighting.

As the Director, Kapuscinski teaches swim classes, supervises lifeguards, and oversees the safety of YMCA programs, staff, and patrons. The YMCA is continually looking for ways to save on energy costs, and it is his responsibility to ensure the pool lighting is both energy-efficient and safe.

To demonstrate the need for effectual lighting of a large indoor pool, Mr. Kapuscinski explained a test routinely used to evaluate on-duty lifeguards. During operational hours, without notifying any personnel, an object similar in size and shape to a hockey puck is discreetly placed in the water. The on-duty lifeguards must notice the puck within a few moments of its placement and act to retrieve it. However, due to an occurrence known as blind spots, this test proved difficult for lifeguards at the facility.

Blind spots are small areas of the pool where visibility is obscured by dim light at the bottom and bright light reflection on the surface. Variations in light output from the old lamps made dramatic differences in visibility depending on where one stood. Mr. Kapuscinski commented, Before the retrofit the pool had several blind spots, each of which required lifeguards to dedicate a significant amount of time checking and re-checking from different angles.

Because blind spots made it difficult to recognize a drowning swimmer, lifeguards were forced to devote an unbalanced amount of attention to them, leaving the rest of the pool less adequately observed.

With the new illumination from Global Energy & Lighting, the blind spots that once plagued the pool are gone. Pucks used in the lifeguard tests are easily recognizable from the poolside or tower. Additionally, because the retrofit kits provide projected lifetimes of 50k+ hours, with only 10% light variance over that lifetime, the retrofit effectively eliminated light variance over the pool.

In total, the YMCA replaced the 400-watt metal-halide systems with 140-watt CeramaTek kits, cutting annual energy costs by 67%, and reducing carbon emissions by 1.3 tons. With the retrofit complete, the YMCA is on track to achieve a 1.8-year return on their investment.

The YMCA has always cultivated a socially active and environmentally conscious image. Through this lighting retrofit they continue to set an example to businesses and communities for sustainability and efficiency, while also demonstrating their commitment to the safety of their patrons. Global Energy & Lighting is proud to help the YMCA achieve safety and sustainability, both in business and recreation.

About Global Energy & Lighting Global Energy & Lighting manufactures and distributes cost-effective, energy-efficient commercial lighting solutions. The executive team is headquartered in Eagle, Idaho, R&D in San Jose, and international sales offices located in Dubai and Malaysia. With an R&D team that is continually working toward innovations that will increase energy performance and efficiency, Global products are engineered to the highest standards. The company also looks to outside consultants to further ensure the integrity of its products.
