Vijay Sampla, once a plumber gets Cabinet berth - November 10, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    New Delhi, Nov 9:

Vijay Sampla, who was once a plumber, scaled new heights today with his induction into the Narendra Modi ministry that is apparently aimed at 2017 Assembly polls in Punjab where BJP hopes to play the Dalit card to woo the Scheduled Caste community.

After SAD leader Harsimrat Kaur Badal, 53-year-old Sampla, a prominent Dalit leader and a first-time MP, is the second Lok Sabha MP from Punjab to become a Union Minister.

Sampla won the recent Lok Sabha elections from the reserved Hoshiarpur seat.

BJP had contested the 2012 Assembly elections along with Shiromani Akali Dal led by Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal but following its victory in Assembly polls in neighbouring Haryana, there is speculation in political circles that BJP may seek a larger share of seats in Punjab or could even go it alone.

Sampla is a matriculate who had in the past worked in the Gulf as a plumber before setting up his own business in Punjab.

Sampla began his political journey after being elected Sarpanch of his village and has also held several important positions in the state BJP unit including having been its Vice-President.

He also has been the Chairman of Punjab State Forest Development Corporation and also the Chairman of Punjab State Khadi and Village Industries Board.

State: Craigslist plumber breaking the law - November 10, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    OVIEDO, Fla. -

The owner of an Oviedo plumbing company has been operating without a license in Central Florida at least since 2011 and is now facing "escalated enforcement" by the Department of Business and Professional Regulation, along with possible criminal charges and fines.

[WEB EXTRA: Find out if your plumber is licensed app for iPhone | Android ]

The decision was prompted by an investigation by ClickOrlando.com and WKMG-TV.

J&B Plumbing, owned and operated by 30-year-old John Dattoma, has two ads on Craigslist, with one claiming to be licensed to install septic systems.

Laszlo Barzca of Seminole County admits he took Dattoma at his word and gave him a $4,000 deposit to install a new septic system for his home.

Dattoma started the work but according to Barzca after digging the trenches for the underground pipes and septic tank Dattoma and the crew never came back.

Dattoma claims he worked on the project for several weeks and only stopped because Barzca left on a two-week business trip and couldn't be reached.

When asked if he needed access to the home, Dattoma said, "No, but I wanted to make sure I would be paid and we didn't know where he was."

Dattoma left the rented backhoe in the yard for days.

Plumber charged with stealing jewelry from Potomac home - November 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A plumber is facing a felony theft charge, accused of helping himself to $40,500 worth of jewelry while on a service call at a house in Potomac.

Matthew Christian Trigger, 36, a plumber with Michael & Son Services, went to a home on Cobble Creek Circle on Sept. 20, and was left alone for a time on the second floor of the house near the master bedroom, according to charging documents.

The owner of the house called police the next day after noticing that six pieces of jewelry were missing. They ranged in value from $1,500 for a gold ring with a row of diamonds to $15,000 for a Canadian Coin necklace with an 18-karat gold chain.

Police confirmed that Trigger had been at the home the previous day, and used databases to confirm that Trigger had pawned a necklace in Frederick matching one described by the victim. The victim identified the necklace from a photograph, according to charging documents.

Police searched Triggers home, in the 7200 block of East Sundown Court in Frederick, on Sept. 26 and found the Canadian Coin pendant in his bedroom and pawn receipts in his vehicle, according to charging documents.

Neither Trigger nor his attorney could be reached for comment, and calls to the home of the victim, Joanne Levin, were not answered Friday.

Michael and Sons did not responded to multiple requests for comment this week.

Trigger faces a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison and a $15,000 fine for a charge of theft of property valued between $10,000 and $100,000. He has a court date scheduled for Dec. 22, according to online court records.

A plumber secures a berth in Modis new Cabinet - November 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

New Delhi, Nov 11: As many as 20 new faces are expected to be inducted into the Union Council of Ministers on Sunday in the first revamp exercise of the Modi Government. Among others, Punjab BJP's Dalit face Vijay Sampla is all set for a Cabinet berth in the reshuffle.

Sampla, a first time Lok sabha member of the party from Hoshiarpur is a grass-roots politician. He had a very humble beginning.

After completing his matriculation, Sampla managed to reach Saudi Arabia where he worked as a plumber, said an India Today report. After some years, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 1998.

"If a tea seller's son can become the Prime Minister, why can't a plumber become a Minister. I am grateful to Modi ji and Amit ji for including me in Cabinet," Sampla was quoted as saying in the report.

The Prime Minister called me up, asking me to be ready to become an MoS. I don't have words to express my feelings, he said. The swearing-in of the new Ministers will take place at 1.030 pm on Sunday at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Before the swearing-in ceremony, Modi is hosting a breakfast for the newcomers.

The current strength of the Council of Ministers is 45 - 23 of Cabinet rank, including the Prime Minister, and 22 Ministers of State. Of the 22 MoS, 10 hold Independent Charge.

There is speculation that a couple of ministers could be dropped while a few could be elevated to the Cabinet rank.

    Plumber's self-imposed quarantine nears end - November 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Winnipeg Free Press - PRINT EDITION

    By: Carol Sanders

    Posted: 11/8/2014 1:00 AM | Comments:

On Friday, Winnipeg plumber Garth Tohms tweeted, "in two days, my arms will be sore from hugging so much."

That's when his self-imposed 21-day quarantine ends after returning from a Red Cross Ebola treatment centre in Sierra Leone.

"I'm being extra-cautious," said Tohms, who was in charge of setting up the plumbing, electrical and security systems at the Red Cross centre in Kenema. "If I were to hug my kids and then get the flu in the next two days, then anybody I was in contact with would be put in isolation." By avoiding contact with his loved ones, he's avoiding a potential hassle for them, said Tohms.

And he's being extra careful because he was as close to the deadly virus as one could get.

"I handled patients and bodies and stuff," said Tohms, whose No. 1 priority was to make sure they had a continuous supply of chlorinated water to disinfect people and objects that come into contact with infected patients.

Since he arrived home, he's taken his temperature twice a day and being checked daily by the Red Cross and weekly by a Winnipeg public-health worker to make sure he has no fever.

In Sierra Leone, Tohms worked 12- to 14-hour days wearing personal-protection suits in the heat and dealt with death and disease daily. The mission takes a toll, said Tohms, who is helped by sharing his experience.

Apprentice plumber awarded over 1m for car crash injuries - November 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Mr Justice Cross said: I believe Mr O Riordan has been injured and damaged just as signficiantly as someone who has lost the use of all their limbs.

An apprentice plumber whose nose split down the middle when the car in which he was a passenger was involved in a crash has been awarded over 1 million damages by the High Court.

As a result of psychiatric injuries, Freddie ORiordan is likely for the foreseeable future to be a shell of his former self, said Mr Justice Kevin Cross.

Awarding a total of 1.14 million, the judge said he believed Mr Riordan had been injured just as significantly as someone who lost the use of all their limbs. The judge granted a stay in the event of an appeal on the basis that there is an immediate payout of 600,000 to Mr ORiordan.

Mr ORiordan (26) of Rush, Co Dublin, had sued Bernard Dempsey of St Catherines Grove, Rush, and Kevin Byrne of St Catherines Drive, Rush, Co Dublin, as a result of the injuries caused in a crash on Loughshinny Hill, North Co Dublin, on July 11th, 2007.

Mr ORiordan was a back-seat passenger in a car driven by Mr Dempsey when the car was struck from behind by a car driven by Mr Byrne. Mr Justice Cross said the accident was frightening and significant and it resulted in the vehicle in which Mr ORiordan was passenger being shunted forward and spinning and rolling over a few times.

Mr O Riordans head hit the back window and, even though he was wearing a seatbelt, he was was thrown forward with his nose striking the car with such force that the windows steel frame was dented.

Mr O Riordans nose was split down the middle but the judge said it was very skilfully and expertly repaired by a plastic surgeon. Given the severity of the physical injury, Mr Justice Cross said the surgical recovery was remarkable.

The major injury sustained by Mr O Riordan, the judge said, was the psychological and psychiatric reaction after the crash and he is suffering from body dysmorphic disorder. He and also developed post traumatic stress disorder at one stage.

Mr Justice Cross accepted that from a very early stage Mr ORiordan was entirely dissatisfied with his physical appearance and he went on to develop a serious and significant psychiatric problem which has persisted and is persisting.
