Q: My wife and I are updating our bathroom with a complete remodel. Not only do we want to bring our bathroom up to date, we want to bring it into the future with the latest technology. Music is very important to us, so what are some new plumbing fixtures we can look at that have built-in sound systems? -- Bill, California
A: Today, we do have plumbing fixtures complete with internal sound systems. While they can be pricey, the good news is that usually you only need one of these musical plumbing fixtures to fill your bathroom with sound. Here are three basic types you can choose from:
-- Showerhead with a built-in speaker -- These are fully functional showerheads with a water-resistant wireless speaker. Just pair it up with your wireless device and you can listen to news and/or music while you shower. The speaker part is removable so you can listen to it outside the shower area as well.
-- High-tech toilet -- Not only do these electronic toilets flush themselves, some models feature complete audio systems with AM/FM radio and an auxiliary input to play your stored music and podcasts.
-- Musical baths -- When filled, hidden transducers in the shell of the tub broadcast sound waves that travel through the water, allowing you to feel the music as well as hear it. When they're empty, once again just plug in your smart device and the tub itself acts like a big working speaker. So, even if you're not taking a bath, the sounds coming from the empty tub can still be music to your ears! The UK energy provider EDF Energy has announced it is backing plans to simplify gas and electricity pricing for customers, reports the International Business Times on June 15, in the article EDF Energy Proposes Unified Pricing Method for Gas and Electricity. The plans propose to apply forecourt style pricing which allows customers to easily compare energy prices across energy providers. EDF Energy has announced that it will put the price plan into practice if the other major energy providers also agree to the plans.
The new price plan means that customers would only need to know the unit price of energy in order to compare prices between energy providers, EDF outlined in a statement. As energy prices often vary regionally it is currently difficult for customers to accurately work out which energy provider can offer them the best deal. For the plan to work successfully, all energy providers would have to agree to implement the plan.
The managing director of EDF Energy, Martin Lawrence, said in a statement that:
We know many consumers are confused when it comes to identifying which tariff is the cheapest for them which is why we back these plans to simplify the market.
However, Ofgem, the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets, believe that the scheme would be difficult to put in place due to the various payment options and packages which currently save customers money.
The specialists at Plumber 24 Hours, who offer emergency plumbers, gas engineers and electricians amongst other services across London and the UK, welcome the news that energy prices may be simplified under this new plan. A representative from Croydon emergency plumber said that:
It is welcome news that energy prices may be simplified under this new plan. As customers often find it difficult to work out which energy provider offers the cheapest or most value for money, any scheme which simplifies this is a welcome one. This proposed scheme seems as if it will offer customers a simpler and easier method of saving money and finding the energy provider which suits their needs.

SummitSkills is reviewing National Occupational Standards (NOS) for the building services engineering sector, re-examining the standards those in the industry are expected to reach in the workplace, reports HVP on June 13. Their work will influence the skills and knowledge of those who work in the building services engineering sector. The NOS creates the training programmes, job specifications and qualifications among other factors for those in the elecrotechnical, heating and ventilating, air conditioning, refrigeration, and plumbing sectors.
The NOS under review range from air conditioning, domestic heating and refrigeration to plumbing, heating and ventilation and SummitSkills are welcoming input from those working in these industries. The review aims to help these industries develop and understand legislation changes, new and developing technology and working practices. The input from those in the industries under review will help NOS correctly identify the knowledge and skills which will help to further improve the industry.
The Chief Executive of SummitSkills, Keith Marshall, told HVP:
As our sector changes, we must review the NOS regularly to ensure that our workforce has access to high-quality training which equips employees with the right skills for the future. We cant do this without the valuable input of those working day-to-day on the job, and those who work alongside them or support them.
Renowned for their fast and efficient emergency plumbing engineers available in a range of locations throughout the UK, Emergency Plumber takes a keen interest in all aspects of the industry, especially steps that will further improve the plumbing industry. According to an article published on Business News on June 5, research conducted by a leading housing and homelessness charity, and a leading energy provider in the UK has discovered that 10% of people renting homes privately have not had yearly gas safety checks conducted on their homes. The charity and the energy provider warn that failure to have these tests conducted increases the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, gas leaks and explosions caused by faulty gas appliances.
The research further uncovered that one in seven landlords do not realise they are obligated by law to arrange annual gas safety checks on their properties, despite the penalty for failing to have these checks conducted being fines or prison.
A gas safety check is an annual check carried out by an engineer who will ensure that all gas appliances in the home are working correctly. Not having appliances checked regularly increases the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning and gas leaks. The annual gas safety check significantly reduces these risks which can be caused by faulty appliances.
Plumber 24 Hours provide emergency plumbers and emergency gas plumbers throughout the UK. A representative from Barking emergency plumber has reacted to the news that 10% of homes do not have a current gas safety certificate and warns of the dangers of faulty gas appliances:
It is a concern that a number of homes do not have an up-to-date gas safety certificate. Faulty appliances can put homes under significant risk of gas leaks, carbon monoxide poisoning and explosions, which can unfortunately have serious consequences. It is vital that homes are checked on a regular basis to reduce this risk and ensure all gas appliances are in good working order.
