Scotland has announced new building regulations on carbon monoxide which will be put in place from 1 October 2013, reports HVP on June 18 in the article Scotland Declares New CO Regulations.
Scotlands new regulations require at least one carbon monoxide alarm to be installed in every space where a fixed combustion appliance is located, except appliances used only for cooking. If a flue passes through a room deemed as a high-risk accommodation such as bedrooms or living rooms, an alarm must also be installed.
It is estimated by the Department of Health that at least 4000 people are diagnosed with carbon monoxide poisoning at A&E each year. However, as the gas is odourless and colourless, and the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning are similar to illnesses such as food poisoning and flu, the correct figure is considered to be significantly higher. The installation of a carbon monoxide alarm ensures that even low levels of carbon monoxide can be detected, alerting people to the presence of the poisonous gas.
Scotland and Irelands area specification manager for Sprue Safety Products, Brian Trueman told HVP that:
Carbon monoxide is a deadly but avoidable threat, and plumbers and installers can play a vital role in ensuring customers stay safe by alerting them to the risks and ensuring they have working alarms in the right locations.

Plumber 24 Hours Responds to Opening of New Training Academy

TAMWORTH plumber Ben Ryan definitely wasnt chosen as a contestant in Dancing with the Tamworth Stars for his ability on the dance floor.
Ben and partner Lucinda Burt are one of 11 couples taking part in the fundraiser for the Cancer Council at Blazes at West Leagues on Saturday night.
Ben is more at home installing hot water systems than tripping the light fantastic, but his good mate, Wade OShea, put his name down as a contestant and Ben felt it was the least he could do to get involved in such a great cause.
Im not a dancer. Ive never done any formal training, but I think Im going alright, Ben said.
It was very hard learning the routine but now its just a matter of remembering those steps.
Sally (Keft-Gill) took a video of our practice session and she reckons I look like Im in the middle of nowhere, but I think Ill be alright.
Ive been practising at home and my wife and seven-month-old find it hilarious.
Ben said he doesnt have any aspirations of being in the winners circle on the night, but you never know stranger things have happened.
The self-employed plumber is relying fairly much on his dance partner, Lucinda Burt, to guide the way.

The topic of improving gas safety in social housing was one of the topics discussed at the All Party Parliamentary Carbon Monoxide Group seminar with CORGI Technical services and the Association of Gas Safety Managers (AGSM), reports HVP on June 17 in the article CORGI Addresses Silent Killer.
The seminar was attended by government representatives, carbon monoxide charities, chief executives of housing associations and MPs to highlight the importance of gas safety and raising standards. Throughout the seminar, chief executive of CORGI Technical Services Claire Heyes, spoke on behalf of AGSM members, insisting that housing associations ensure that safety matters are discussed with their workforce and that any safety concerns that members of the workforce have are shared with the board.
At the seminar, Heyes spoke of the importance of rethinking the way in which gas safety is addressed by the leaders of housing associations and how the AGSM can help:
There is much scope for rethinking the way we do things, refocusing resources where most value can be added, ensuring there is adequate education, training and ongoing CPD. Creativity, collaboration and new skills will be key to developing long-term benefits and moving the industry forward. This is turn will lead to cost savings and increasing safety.
