Dean Clifford takes part in Ultra Marathon in northern Canada
10:21am Wednesday 13th March 2013 in News By Mike Laycock, Chief reporter
Dean Clifford, of Tang Hall, gets in some practice for the 3366 Ultra Marathon
IF youve been shivering during Yorks recent cold snap, spare a thought for Dean Clifford.
The York plumber is set to brave temperatures as low as minus 40C when he sets off on a punishing 350-mile race across the Arctic Circle next week.
Dean, 40, of Tang Hall, will have to complete about 45 miles a day, pulling provisions such as food, cooking items, clothing, sleeping kit and other safety gear on a sledge, during the eight-day 3366 Ultra Marathon in northern Canada.
He says he is at risk both of frostbite and hallucinations in the race, which has only been completed by seven people in the last five years.
My family think Im mad, said Dean, who is married to Sarah and has a daughter Ebony, 17, and a son, Harvey, eight.
Race organisers say the race can quite genuinely claim to be the toughest, coldest and windiest extreme ultra marathon on the planet, adding: This race is only for big boys and girls unless youre mad.
But Mr Clifford, who has been treated for cancer diagnosed in 2010, already has some experience of crazy challenges in extreme temperatures.

ITV recently reported that a campaign in the North West of England had revealed that 17% of homes contain unsafe gas appliances. In response, the team at Emergency Plumber have issued some advice on the dangers of carbon monoxide.
(PRWEB UK) 12 March 2013
Best known for providing fast response London emergency plumbers, Emergency Plumber also offers Gas Safe Registered engineers. As such the team are dedicated to raising awareness over the dangers of carbon monoxide and the recent statistics have prompted them to issue the following advice.
It is important to ensure that gas appliances in your home are installed by a Gas Safe Registered engineer. These also need to be checked at least once a year, to protect the safety of both you and your family.
It is also important for people to be aware of the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning. It can be difficult to differentiate these between those of the flu, however be sure to look out for headaches, dizziness and nausea and loss of consciousness. If your symptoms get better when you are out of the house, this should spark warning signals too. If you are concerned you may be suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning, turn off your gas supply if possible, open windows to get fresh air in and get everyone outside as quickly as you can.
The team at Emergency Plumber continue to research the latest industry news and updates.

Plumber wants justice -

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Indianapolis police are now trying to track down a man who came to the city even though he was facing theft charges in Florida.
And it's all because of a persistent plumber. He's mad and Kirk Angelocci, the owner of Mickeys Plumbing in West Palm Beach, Fla. and says he's not going to take it.
Angelocci says Joseph Pagan a former employee stole a camera similar to this one from his shop valued at around $8,000.
"I totally trusted this guy," Angelocci said. "I helped him out. I even hired his wife because they were hurting for money then he does this to me. It's just really hard to handle." Theft charges were filed but Angelocci says it took Florida Prosecutors 6 months to issue a warrant for Pagan's arrest. During that time, Pagan left Florida.
Angelocci tracked Pagan to an eastside neighborhood. What he did next may sound extreme.
He sent every one of Pagan's neighbors a reward flier. Angelocci says he received several calls but saw no action from police.
"I was ready to just pull my hair out," he said. "I did all the work. I told them where he was at all they had to do was send a car,"
Nothing happened until he shared his story with the CBS station in West Palm Beach who asked for help from 24-Hours News 8.
24-Hour New s8 reporter John LaBerge confronted Pagan at his home. He said he was aware of the flier but denied the allegations of theft.
Police here haven't yet confronted him.

Jason Rutledge wasn't even sure where he was sleeping last night, let alone who was going to fix his customers' faulty washing machines and toilets in Invercargill.
And in that, the 35-year-old Southlander was a breath of fresh air at the Hurricanes' training yesterday where he provided a throwback to the days of the amateur game.
"I've been trying to get my business up and running with the plumbing back home," the Invercargill plumber said.
"There's a couple of people who have been put on standby till I find out what's happening on Wednesday."
Rutledge, who has played 58 matches for the Highlanders and 114 for Southland, won't know how long his "working holiday" in Wellington will last till Motu Matu'u has a midweek fitness test.
The Hurricanes' first-choice hooker Dane Coles has a low ankle sprain which will keep him out for two to four weeks, while Matu'u is struggling with a shoulder injury.
And though wider training group rake Ash Dixon will don the No 2 jersey against the Highlanders in Dunedin on Friday, he may need a backup.
Which is why Rutledge downed tools and caught the early flight to Wellington yesterday.
"It's been quite busy back in the real world trying to fit in plumbing and training, and that sort of stuff," he said. "I haven't had the mayday call from anyone about a broken toilet yet but there's a couple of them who might be missing a washing machine or something like that."
As was the case before rugby went professional, Rutledge spends his weeks juggling the game he loves with his business, Rutledge Plumbing, which pays the bills. "It's been tough over the past few years; four years with the Highlanders. I get the business going good, then I move back to Dunedin and have to close it down, then I come back and get it started, and I'm going back and forth. Now I've got it going good and I'm in the process of hiring another tradesman to help me out.

With temperatures set to drop below freezing once again, the plumbing experts at Emergency Plumber have released advice on how to prevent burst pipes.
(PRWEB UK) 11 March 2013
Emergency Plumber offers fully registered plumbers and engineers around the clock, 365 days a year and the team regularly attend to plumbing emergencies such as frozen pipes. More than aware of the damage this problem can cause, the team were prompted to issue the following advice.
Frozen pipes can cause unprecedented damage to peoples home, due to the threat of bursting, followed by water damage. They are one of the biggest causes for home insurance claims and are even more of a threat when the weather takes people by surprise like its expected to this week. Homeowners can take action to protect themselves however, through making sure their lofts, as well as the pipes themselves are insulated.
Those who are planning to go away for a few days, should consider contacting a friend or neighbour and asking them to pop in occasionally to check their pipes have not frozen. If it is discovered that pipes have frozen, the most important thing to do is to turn off the water supply as soon as possible. The next step should be to protect everything in the immediate vicinity, cover with towels, and gently thaw the ice. At this point the main priority should be to call a team of fully trained emergency plumbers such as those provided by Emergency Plumber and let them tackle the issue.
The team at Emergency Plumber are committed to providing safety advice regarding the services they offer.
