Mr. Rooter Tip of The Day: Although leaks sometimes occur in the wall of a galvanized fitting, they are more typical at the threads because the threads reduce the thickness of the pipe wall by more than half.
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (PRWEB) November 28, 2012
Cut galvanized pipe results in ends without threads, says Mr Rooter, and there is no good way to splice in a replacement or a T. You have to cut out a section of pipe, unscrew the resulting pieces from their respective fittings, and install a new section of non-galvanized pipe. Mr Rooter offers free expert plumbing advice daily and adds that when making changes to a galvanized pipe, you must have threads to work with.
Although leaks sometimes occur in the wall of a galvanized fitting, they are more typical at the threads because the threads reduce the thickness of the pipe wall by more than half, says Beall.
The type of threads you need for the replacement fitting depends on whether youre discarding the fitting (because it leaks or youre replacing it with a different type) or keeping it. Discarding the fitting leaves male threads on a pipe end that require a female adapter. Keeping the fitting leaves female threads requiring a male adapter.
Mr Rooter Tip Of The Day
Tip #1 You have to make two cuts one several inches away from the threads and a second at the threads themselves.
Tip #2 Use two large pipe wrenches to remove the coupling from the pipe. If the coupling is frozen (rusted on), heat it with a propane torch and then remove it.
Tip #3 Clean up the threads with a wire brush and rag. Screw on and hand tighten a female fitting appropriate to the replacement pipe.
Tip #4 Tighten the fitting with a wrench.

Q: I love to cook for friends and family, especially during the holidays. So I was thinking about asking my husband for a "pot-filler faucet" installed in my kitchen for my big gift. Can you give me some information on these specialty faucets and how they are installed? This way, I can make a nice sales pitch to my husband and just maybe he will surprise me! -- Ann, Iowa.
A: I like the way you think -- getting all your information first, then making your case with a professional sales pitch. A pot-filler-type faucet is a good item to have in your kitchen if you want to cook like a pro.
Pot fillers are tall faucets with long swinging spouts that are installed close to your cook top or stove. True to the name, you can fill your pots right on the burner top, and avoid carrying water-filled pots across your kitchen. Plus, you can easily add more water while you're cooking.
Pot fillers usually have a higher flow rate for filling large pots. To install one, you need a little space close to your stove where a hole can be drilled, and an area under the counter where a cold-water line can be connected.
There's no need for a hot-water line or drains, but you do need to follow local codes. Final note: Price up the job first, because a pot filler can be a high-end item. Be careful not to drain your wallet!

Readers of The Peninsula Beacon cast their votes for Best Plumber and Bill Howe is proud to
take third place.
San Diego, CA (PRWEB) November 29, 2012
Every year The Peninsula Beacon asks their readers to choose the best of in the retail and services industries around Point Loma and Ocean Beach. Through both paper and online ballot voting over a three month period, readers told the paper which companies they trust and spend their hard earned money in a wide variety of business categories.
Traditionally The Peninsula Beacons Readers Choice Awards are limited to merchants and service providers who are located in the community. Since Bill Howe Plumbing, Inc. has been the preferred plumber in San Diego for over 30 years, they have established relationships with many local communities, including Ocean Beach and Point Loma.
The Peninsula Beacon is part of the San Diego Community Newspaper Group, Inc. which also publishes the Beach & Bay Press and the La Jolla Village News. The paper, also known simply as The Beacon, is published every other Thursday, covers only local news and is distributed to 20,000 homes, businesses and newsstands in the 92106 and 92107 zip codes.
Bill Howe Plumbing, Inc. has been offering San Diego plumbing services since the company started in Pacific Beach over three decades ago. Now operating out of their office in Kearney Mesa, the company has grown into one of the largest family-owned plumbing, heating, air conditioning, and restoration companies serving most of San Diego County.
My husband, Bill, started this company as a plumber in San Diego who was looking to gain customers trust by offering them high quality work at a low cost, said Tina Howe, Vice President of the Bill Howe Family of Companies. Weve been serving the Ocean Beach area since we started, as we were always located along the coast. Even though our office wasnt physically located in Ocean Beach, it still felt like we were part of that community and this award is proof that were still very much part of the Ocean Beach neighborhood and were grateful for that.

A Long Island plumber who has been laboring seven days a week for the last month helping Sandy victims won a million dollars in a New York Lottery game.
Tony Auriemma, of Greenlawn, bought his winning Color of Money scratch-off after a 12-hour workday replacing damaged boilers and hot water heaters in communities like Oceanside.
"They haven't had heat or hot water since the storm and their lives are totally changed down there," Auriemma, 38, said. "It's bad."
Ironically, if not for Sandy, Auriemma would have missed buying the winning ticket on November 18. The father of three was supposed to be away on his annual hunting trip, but his Sandy-related workload forced him to cancel.
"We scratched it off and started screaming," Auriemma said. "We thought we won a hundred thousand dollars and then my wife said, 'no, it's a million dollars!' And I said, 'oh, my God!'"
Auriemma, his wife Jennifer and mother-in-law Frances Brauer were introduced as winners Thursday at Lottery headquarters in Garden City. The Auriemmas and Brauer will split the prize, with each taking home about $16 thousand a year for twenty years.
Despite his prize, Auriemma continues working, prompting the obvious question from his customers.
"They were like, 'I can't believe you're still here?' And I was like, 'I want to make you happy,'" Auriemma said. "To see the smiles on their faces when I give them hot water and heat, it's like they won the million dollars."
Auriemma still has at least several weeks more of work for Sandy victims. And he doesn't seem to mind one bit.
"Even before I won the money, I felt blessed helping these people," he said.

An Omaha woman is furious with a plumber hired to do some work in her place. Her anger isnt directed at the job he did. She claims he attacked and severely injured her 20-pound dog.
According to the police report, Peggy Babcock told investigators the man let her poodle mix named Jack out of his kennel and then struck the dog with a metal stake commonly used to tether a dog outdoors.
She was at work when it happened -- November 1.
Babcock told officers the blow knocked the animals eye out of the socket. She tells Channel Six News that there isn't any neurological damage, but there was a skull fracture and the lost eye.
An emergency trip to the vet lead to a successful treatment of the dog, but also left the woman with a $1,668.74 bill.
Babcock questions why the guy let the dog out of the kennel in the first place -- only to later explain that he felt threatened and that's why he used the metal tether to protect himself.
Omaha Police have re-submitted the case to the County Attorney as a felony Destruction of Property case. Babcock says investigators initially felt there wasn't a strong case to prove what the plumber did to the dog since there are no witnesses.
Before-and-after photos of the injured dog can be seen through the attached slideshow above. A word of caution -- the images can be disturbing.
