New tech combats drought - February 8, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    By Brandi Walker | Published 02/04/15 6:30am

Hexocover, a new technology supported by Tech Launch Arizona, was designed to prevent the evaporation of water and use solar power to generate energy.

Robert Sleeper, the UA College of Engineering licensing manager with Tech Launch Arizona, said he licensed the Hexocover to the company RePower Design, which is run by Nathan Barba, a co-inventor.

Hexocover is made up of 4-inch plastic balls that are sandwiched between two pieces of plastic, said Nathan Barba, managing partner of RePower Design and an Arizona State University student.

These modules are connected and topped with hexagonal shapes that are used on solar panels.

The Hexocover technology is easy to install and can be deployed to cover any open body of water where its important to save water from evaporation, said Moe Momayez, co-inventor of Hexocover and associate professor in the department of mining and geological engineering.

The best environment to deploy this would be in Southwest U.S. or anywhere else where you have a semi-arid climate with a lot of evaporation, Momayez said. The evaporation rate in Arizona is in excess of 100 to 105 inches per each year.

The Hexocover is a very cost effective method of stopping evaporation, Barba said. He and Momayez agreed that there was a need to prevent water evaporation due to climate change and significant drought in places such as California and Texas.

If we could make a dent in some of the water loss some of the cities and municipalities are dealing with, we think that could make a huge impact, Barba said.

Momayez added that they experimented with this design for almost 18 months, and the results have been promising.

Water park resort to get public hearing Monday - February 8, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Wyndham buys Dolce; Great Wolf to air proposal at Planning Comm.; mayor enters private meeting but The Citizen reporter is kicked out

A public hearing on a rezoning request by Great Wolf Lodge Family Resorts to expand the facilities on the 38-acre site currently occupied by the Dolce Atlanta-Peachtree Hotel and Resort on Aberdeen Parkway to include a family-oriented indoor water park is scheduled for Feb. 9 before the Peachtree City Planning Commission.

Meanwhile, the Dolces local competitor the Wyndham Conference Center about a mile to the east may be about to become the only conference center in town.

The Wyndham Hotel Group announced on Feb. 2 that it had acquired all of Dolces properties in North America and Europe.

How that sale ultimately affects the Dolce-Great Wolf proposal has not been publicly announced. A Wyndham official said no immediate changes are expected in the operation of either facility.

This is a private meeting and Ben is not welcome. Those were the words of Peachtree City resident John Dufresne, the apparent spokesman for a group of Peachtree City residents prior to a meeting Tuesday night at the Dolce Atlanta-Peachtree Hotel and Resort with representatives of Great Wolf Family Resorts.

The Tuesday night meeting of neighboring subdivisions bordering the Dolce property was about to take place so that neighbors questions could be addressed by Great Wolf representatives.

However, Mayor Vanessa Fleisch apparently was welcome. She was seen by the departing reporter entering the private meeting between the homeowners association and the Great Wolf representative.

The Citizen reporter was there to attend and report on the meeting that was a precursor to the public hearing on the Great Wolf proposal that will be heard by the Peachtree City Planning Commission on Feb. 9.

Dufresne maintained that the meeting was private and that it had been decided that the news media could not be present.

Amusement park to make big splash in heart of PTC? - January 19, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Rezoning, variances to be required for conversion of Dolce hotel to indoor water park; Great Wolf Lodge pitches increased tax income for PTC, Fayette

The nations largest chain of family-oriented, indoor water park resorts has its sights set on Peachtree City the very heart of Peachtree City. Great Wolf Lodge Family Resorts is proposing to expand the facilities on the 38-acre site currently occupied by the Dolce Atlanta-Peachtree Hotel and Resort on Aberdeen Parkway.

The proposal by Great Wolf Lodge of Georgia LLC requests the rezoning of the 38.4-acre property from GC (general commercial) to LUC (limited use commercial) to redevelop the property. In addition to the water park and hotel, the application states that the property will include specialty restaurants, arcades, spas, fitness rooms and childrens activity areas.

Great Wolf Lodge currently operates 13 family-oriented, all-suites water park resorts. The only facility in the Southeast is located in Charlotte, N.C. The Charlotte resort offers a variety of suites for 4-8 people and ranges in price from $199-400 per day.

Dolce Atlanta-Peachtree currently operates the facility that includes 236 rooms and 65 meeting rooms in 178,593 sq. ft. of convention center space along with swimming pools, restaurants and tennis courts.

Great Wolf is proposing to operate a family-oriented destination resort operating from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m. each day which would include 398 guest rooms and a total of 173,615 sq. ft. of entertainment, retail, restaurant, meeting and support space.

The property is located on Aberdeen Parkway approximately 900 feet from Ga. Highway 74 North.

Adjacent property includes GR (general residential) to the north, GC (general commercial) to the west which includes the Hilton Garden Inn, LUC-3 (limited use commercial) to the south with Riley Parkway and adjacent residences to the east.

City Manager Jim Pennington on Saturday said he believes the Dolce property has been on the market for at least the past two years. No city official has commented publicly on the proposed development or on its chances for approval by the City Council.

Beyond the existing hotel and conference center buildings spread throughout the 38-acre property, Great Wolf is proposing to add a 54,800 sq. ft. indoor water park connected to the current conference center, a three-story hotel on the north side of the site, increased parking, two additional stormwater ponds and a possible patio off one of the existing restaurants.

STW Water Awarded Design and Installation Contract by NYSE-listed Oil & Gas Company for Multiple Water Reclamation … - January 7, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

MIDLAND, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--STW Resources Holding Corp (OTCQB: STWS), a leader in oilfield water reclamation and remediation, has signed an initial $2.9 million contract to build, operate and maintain a comprehensive system of water reclamation facilities for a NYSE-listed oil & gas company with multiple locations throughout the Permian Basin, Stanley Weiner, CEO of STW Water, announced today. STW Water, with its partner TRE & Associates, LLC (TRE) (a civil engineering firm), is moving forward to obtain drinking water permits and to build water systems for the clients field operation facility in Midland, Texas and its Mancamp housing facilities across its Texas operations.

The leader in water treatment systems for the oil & gas industry, STW Water, will assist in the fabrication and furnishing of equipment, installation, training, and maintenance of complete water reclamation and treatment systems for its client. The company, along with TRE, will also assist in water well development, testing final construction and securing potable water permits for wells from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).

We are especially gratified that our client, one of the largest operators in the Permian Basin, has selected STW as their partner in realizing their industry-leading commitment to diligently reduce their consumption of clean municipal drinking water, both for production requirements and facility operations, noted Weiner. This contract underscores STW Waters leadership as the partner of choice in providing technologies and solutions for improved sustainability.

As new housing facilities and Mancamps are built throughout the state to support the tremendous growth in the Permian Basin, STW Water and TRE have been contracted to facilitate approvals for potable water supply from TCEQ for the Dockum Brackish Water aquifer wells at a depth of 1400+ ft.

STW Water and TRE have submitted their engineering design for their proprietary treatment process capable of treating high brackish water from the Dockum aquifer wells with total dissolved solids in the range of 8500 ppm, satisfying the clients needs for both corporate and field operations. STW Waters innovative process and exclusively license technology will be the first of its kind in the State of Texas to produce reclaimed potable water with no negative environmental impact.

STWs design and technology eliminates the need for deep well wastewater injections, evaporation ponds and other recognized methods for disposal of concentrated brine wasted from desalination activities. The proprietary Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) system is free of potentially damaging concentrated brine discharge. The system consists of a STW hybrid high-brackish reverse osmosis unit permitting up to 85% fresh water recovery, followed by the patented ZLD system capable of achieving 95-97% fresh water recovery and 3-5% solid waste consisting of salt crystals and minerals.

The ZLDTM unit is exclusively licensed to STW through its partner, Salttech, BV. This water processing system offers several technological advancements over conventional systems: It produces a solid discharge that is easily used or sold, generates a substantially higher percentage of clean drinking water per gallon of brackish or ocean water, is 60% more compact than alternatives, and is highly energy efficient, using up to 50% less energy than comparable conventional systems.

Officials: Woodbine golf course not ready for public use, needs trees removed - December 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

More than 100 dead trees need to be removed from the former Woodbine golf course and banquet hall property before the village allows residents to use the land, officials said Tuesday.

Village board members agreed Tuesday that, for safety reasons, residents should not use the village-owned Woodbine property until the trees are removed.

Village manager Cameron Davis said the village plans to hire a contractor remove the dead trees and hopes they will come down this winter. Meanwhile, the village has placed no ice skating, no fishing and no swimming signs on the former golf courses ponds and will install snow fences to block public access to the property.

The village bought the 103-acre Woodbine golf course and banquet hall out of foreclosure last December. Under an agreement with the Ludwig family, who owned the course, golf and banquets were allowed to continue this year, and the village would take over the property by years end.

Trustee Margaret Sabo said she had concerns that the public will want to use the land now that it belongs to the village, but stressed that it is not ready for public use yet.

Sabo said the village board needs to discuss rules and regulations regarding the use of the land and evaluate the property. She said she wants to ensure that residents in the nearby subdivision are protected and that the police will patrol the area.

Coal Provocateur Sees Profits in Coals Long, Slow Death - December 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Robert Murray is pumped -- as though coal-fired steam might be coursing through his veins. Striding purposefully, he ascends a lectern in a conference room at Pittsburghs Wyndham Grand Downtown hotel toting a cardboard box with hundreds of copies of his keynote speech to give out later lest anyone miss a word.

It turns out to be a corporate version of a hellfire-and-damnation sermon for the 250 U.S. coal executives assembled at the Platts Coal Marketing Days conference. Satan and his minions arent in the room but Murray knows their names.

Environmental alarmists and liberal elitists, he says, his voice rising as he whips off his glasses. And worse than them all, the insane, regal administration of King Obama and Obamas Environmental Protection Agency.

    Confronting Coal

Murray, 74, pauses for effect and then lowers his voice. We have the absolute destruction of the United States coal industry. It isnt coming back. Its permanent. Virtually all of it is permanent. And if you think its coming back, you dont understand the business. Or youre smoking dope.

This is vintage Murray, Americas pro-coal provocateur-in-chief, a coal miners son and a former miner himself, a man whose anti-regulation record is so unwavering that he once dismissed acid rain as a hoax, never mind climate change.

His warnings are all the more interesting when framed against what Murray, chief executive officer and owner of Murray Energy Corp., is actually doing. For all the doom and gloom, he is gorging on coal mines -- Murray Energy last fall spent $3.5 billion to acquire five of Consol Energy Inc.s West Virginia operations.

It was the biggest deal in the beleaguered coal sector in two-and-a-half years, catapulting his St. Clairsville, Ohio-based company into the countrys fifth-largest coal producer and making Murray Energy Americas largest privately held coal producer. Ever since, Murrays been on a tear, ramping up production at his newly acquired mines as he ratchets up his rhetoric in defense of his beleaguered industry and against Obamas War on Coal.

Yet if war is hell, Murray seems to smell something else in the air besides brimstone: Money. Make no mistake about it, Bob Murray has a plan. Statistics indicate that its been a terrible decade for coal. The market capitalization of the entire industry has shrunk from $78 billion in 2011 to about $25 billion today. Coal now generates 37 percent of the countrys electricity - down from over 50 percent in 2007.

Still, 37 percent represents at least a $30 billion a year industry and even as that pie shrinks, huge profits will accrue to those who stay the course. Even globally, coals lot is always more complicated than the dire prophesies of both its detractors and advocates. Consider that Germany -- with the worlds most ambitious green-energy program -- has gone back to burning copious amounts of dirty lignite to make up for the shortfall in electricity being caused by its phase-out of its nuclear power plants.
