Porches were originally intended for purely utilitarian function, and became popular in the American South where the summer heat was intolerable without a shaded respite. Porches also provided a way to communicate with neighbors and keep an eye out on the surrounding land, a space open to nature within the safety of home. Throughout the majority of the 20th century porches were no longer a key element in residential architecture, but they are again gaining in popularity.

Numerous house styles make use of the porch as their defining element. Choose a Craftsman home with a deep, shaded porch, a Greek Revival house with stately columns providing a grand entrance. Farmhouse, Country, Tidewater, and Bungalow homes will also offer the comfort of outdoor living at the front of the home.

Stylistic details of the porch often define the character of a house. For example, columns can be one or two stories high, round or square, light and airy, or heavy and grounding. Cornices, piers, woodwork, and rooflines are different for every style; and of course paint color can be used to further enhance a porch's appeal. Craftsman homes usually have heavy piers that extend to ground level, with lighter columns supporting the roofline. Queen Anne homes will have woodwork painted in a variety of colors to set their unique architectural elements apart. A farmhouse usually evokes a simpler time and is often painted white with basic columns and balustrade.

Today's porches still serve the utilitarian need for shade, but they are quickly becoming an extension of the interior home. Owners treat the porch as an outdoor room and display their decorative style for guests to see before even entering the home. Portuguese history permeates the very walls at Porches Velho restaurant

One of the nicest things about the Algarve is the array of unassuming yet utterly charming places that you can find here. Take the village of Porches for example. While its vehicular namesake (more or less) is known worldwide, the same cannot be said of this small town. A few kilometers east of Carvoeiro, and overshadowed by the tourist hotspots of Albufeira and Praia da Rocha, Porches is that place you pass on the way to somewhere else.

Yet it is home to some top Algarve attractions, such as the very best pottery to be found in the Algarve, to a restaurant that holds 2 Michelin stars, and to one of the most romantic and picturesque chapels you will find anywhere, not to mention an award winning 5 star resort.

In the late 1960s the local artisans craft of pottery was dying out. Styles and tastes had changed, and skills were being lost. Until, that is, Irish artist Patrick Swift and his Portuguese counterpart Lima de Freitas decided to reverse the tide. They founded Porches Pottery in 1968 and set about reviving this centuries-old craft and turning it into a viable, international business, today run by Swifts daughters.

A visit to the Porches Pottery workshop is fascinating there is a real sense of history here, and the skill shown by the artisans hand painted pottery is amazing.

Part too of this areas history is the wonderfully picturesque chapel at Nosso Senhora da Rocha. Perched atop cliffs that survey the vast Atlantic and southern skies, this tiny, whitewashed chapel, which dates from the XV century, is evocative of a simpler life and simpler beliefs, and has been the romantic setting for many an Algarve wedding.

Portuguese history permeates the very walls at Porches Velho restaurant. Housed in what was once a wine cellar, the building is over 200 years old. The immensely thick white-washed walls and high ceilings add to the old-world charm, and when the Fado singers begin their mournful songs, accompanied by the traditional 12 string Portuguese guitar, it is easy to imagine yourself back in times gone by. And at the nearby O Leo de Porches, another tri-centenary building , the setting is old-world and the hospitality is timeless, but the techniques used in the kitchen are innovative, producing dishes that could easily grace the tables of the finest European restaurants.

Covered Porches is a beautiful home with expansive, wide water and mountain views of Smith Mountain Lake. Its large windows and wide covered porches with new ceiling fans provide spectacular sunset views. The lawn slopes gently to a large, covered dock that features ceiling fans, table, chairs, and a cabana with small refrigerator and ice chest. Enjoy our 3 person canoe, 2 person canoe and 1 person kayak with lifejackets and paddles. Floats and chairs are provided. There are steps on the floater as well as steps into the lake. Room for 2 boats.

A natural sandy beach gives you another entry point into the clear blue water of the lake. The home is located on a cove that is ideal for swimming, kayaking or just floating. There is ample paved parking with room for several cars. Enjoy WiFi internet on the porches or down on the dock while watching the sunset. An outdoor wood burning fireplace on the covered porch is located off the master suite for those cool evenings. Enjoy our firepit stocked with wood for those cool evenings cooking smore's.

On the main level, the lakeside master suite features a King bed and large bathroom with a garden jetted tub and separate walk-in shower. Off the master bedroom is a porch and outdoor fireplace with 2 wicker gliders. The large great room with it's 55' flat panel HD TV, stero, Blue Ray DVD/CD player opens up into the kitchen where the farm table can seat 10 people and bar area 2 people. There is an additional table and chairs on the outside porch. (Yes, looks like a table for 4 but it opens up to seat 6) 4 comfortable chairs are located on this porch, as well. The laundry room is on the main level where there is a 2nd refrigerator. A second bedroom with queen bed and full bathroom are also on the main level. The lower level consists of 3 bedrooms and 1 & 1/2 baths. Entertaining is comfortable with the large sectional sofa, flat panel HD TV, and DVD/BlueRay player. For your enjoyment, foosball table, bookcase of movies, Nintendo game system(Wii) and board games are available.

We have a Weber Genesis E330 Gas grill on the upper deck.
